I just came across this video ( in 2021) I sold my Serendipity 43 Samiko hull #26 about 3+ years back after 25 great years of ownership, and still missing her. You fulfilled my dream of doing an ocean crossing. Relative to speeds, our tops was 14.5Kt but I know she was capable of more. Proud to have owned one of Peterson's BEST designs.

Thanks for your wonderful video. Watching it fills a need and gives me hope to one day do an Atlantic Crossing. Looks like you guys had a great time. I love the pictures of the dolphins. Thank you for the share and the great video. I know you didn't really upload this for us but it would be nice to know some background for those of us curious about making such a journey. What type of boat you have and how long the journey took. anyways, great vid thanks again for sharing!

@hansjalv It was only the middle bit from Bermuda to the Azores. But we did haul, 1850 miles in 12 days equals about 150 miles a day. The boat owner and first mate are ocean racers so they had the spinnaker constantly dialed in.

Oh, and also the last 5 minutes vocal. Would be nice to have more commentary from Capt. and crew. Weather conditions Vs forecast, current position, who is standing watch over night, what's the food like, who cooked, what preparations were made for the voyage, documentation req'd, how the plotted course progressed, did you see anyone/thing on the crossing, did you talk to anyone on the radio, calmest Vs roughest weather, did you fish, did anyone get seasick, did you get becalmed.

I love your video- Always had a dream for sailing, but realized that if I waited for someone else to invite me it would never happen, so I'm going for it on my own. Hope I can meet up with some people who would want to do like as you did, or if I have to- do it myself!!! Thanks!

The equation for most sailboats is 1.34 * (length-in-ft ^ 0.5). That puts a 50 footer at a hull speed of about 9.5 knots. Displacement hulls are slow.

There's autopilots that can control the wheel, or a windvane which works well if you don't want ot rely on electricity. however, you should always keep a watch on, so you sleep in shifts. Just poking your head up, checking the sails, the wind, the direction of the boat, etc every 10-20 min.
@malonefilm11 жыл бұрын
Many designers have increased the multiplier to 1.35 or even 1.4 in recent years as boats have gotten lighter and resultantly faster. But, you're correct in general, though hull speed is calculated as a function of the square root of waterline length, not overall length. Most 50 foot boats would have a waterline not much longer than 40 feet, yielding a hull speed closer to 8.5 knots.

Very nice video. Bermuda is only 600 miles from New York? You could probably get there within 8 hours traveling on a fast seaworthy yacht.
@halllwd9412 жыл бұрын
I prefer a monohull. 1 yes it does right itself. 2. It has a better approachable angle to most big waves. 3 there is no way to go "too fast" with a monohull. Whereas a multihull can go too fast which causes the bow to go underwater and if you don't have netting in the front will flip the boat. Don't have any of those problems in a multihull. And if sleeping with the motion is why you want a cat. Sleep in a hammock.

Hehe...well it's 850 miles from NYC to Bermuda. So for an eight hour run you'd need to average a little over 100 knots. Not out of the question for a jet boat, but I'm too lazy to sail anything faster than walking speed. Thanks for watching!

Looks like you had an amazingly smooth crossing with the sea cooperating. What month was this? Can you count on those kinds of conditions during that month? How were you able to assemble such a good crew?
@jimbojims12 жыл бұрын
i think the price has a lot to do with it, cats are quite a lot more if you compare similar length boats (of course they have more volume though) cats will also never right themselves if they flip over (uncommon but they have been known to pitchpole in rough seas and also cats often pound a lot in heavy confused seas ( im referring to the water being pounded underneath in between the two hulls when the boat has a lot of up down motion) i know there are some design which minimise this though

@yokid414 Expect the unexpected? My only advice is to minimize complexity of everything. Working on broken systems in the middle of the ocean is challenging. Especially if you have to tweak a through hull or climb a mast.

Just get the Go Pro Hero 3 Black Edition. $399.00 Waterproof. Shock Proof. And can shoot up to 4k resolution. Great for timelapses. Plus it shoots 1080p at 60fps which is faster than most cameras. And can take 12 megapixel stills. Perfect for sailing. Oh and you can mount it anywhere. I especially like when it's mounted on top of the most and the boat rolls (on purpose) As long as it's mounted well it makes for an awesome shot

Okay, so you're telling me traveling on a sailboat doing 80 knots is equivalent to 92 miles an hour? I find that hard to believe. That would be pretty damn fast for a sailboat. I don't even go that fast driving my car. I'd be pulled over by cops left and right if I did receiving many speeding tickets.

All right, you say 850 miles from N.Y. to Bermuda. I'll take your word for it you being into navigation and equipped with sea charts and such. Probably an error listed in the dictionary where it does say on mine that it's 600 miles from New York harbor to Bermuda.

Hull speed on a 50 ft. boat is sqrt(50)*.1.34=9.5 knots.
@KyleYankan11 жыл бұрын
I mean, that doesn't change reality. Goto Google and type 80 knots = ? mph. It will tell you exactly how fast that is in MPH. What I'm saying is most sailboat only go 6 to 8 knots.
@KyleYankan11 жыл бұрын
Still, assuming a boat to go 80-100knots an hour for 8 hours straight? That's big assumption for someone who says he doesn't know anything about.
