Sail Away ladies really comes from a Black origined Chanty called Dineo. In antebellum, times a decisive sector of US and British sailors were African Americans or Africans, so there is a strong interchange between chanties and songs that entered the common song pool in the South, all with this basically African or African American call and response structure that was practically useful for a chanty. A variety of common verse tunes based on Dineo used to be found across the South among Black and white players and children. Uncle Dave's recording became the only thing folk revivalists and folkies know. This tune has the same exact tune, except usually pitched in a different key, as Sally Ann. LOL Uncle Dave's version included a verse that can only seen as celebrating incest!
