Yep, duct tape should never be used on ducts, foil tape only. Heating ducts are worse than cooling ducts at destroying the tape so this may work for a while.

Ducktape was developed for fast short term waterproofing. It's only because the name sounds so similar to duct tape in english that it started being used for ducting. There is some ducting appropriate tape that looks and feels very much like duct tape but in industry testing by ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and others duck tape is the only commonly used tape that fails at a high rate over time.
@donlindell1994
@donlindell1994 Жыл бұрын
Need to add some long tie-wraps for a stronger mechanical hold around the ends of those flexible ducting. That tape won't last long. Something readily available here in the states, usually in the electrical section of the big box hardware store, but you may find them in the HVAC section as well. Also... need more toilet paper! It was the first thing my wife noticed in the closet since she is always mocking my TP hoarder instincts. I'd rather run out of food and water than TP!

You could use a set of "fishing sticks" which are like fiberglass tent poles that screw together so you can fish a mousing line from practically one end of the boat to the other in one shot. A 30' set packs down to almost nothing and is enough to get a good ways into the mast as well so a line can be fished up to the spreaders for cameras, lights, supplemental antennas or whatnot. Two sets would make it all the way down the mast from the masthead if you get lucky. Fish sticks are straight and work soooooooo much better than a curly fish tape which is made for smaller conduit and sucks trying to fish a larger more-open space like above a ceiling or under a floor.

The duct tape will fail over time. Simple solution, get oversized zip ties and wrap them over the outside on your flexible duct to plenum box connections. That’s a mechanical and plastic fastener that won’t rust or fail. Fellow boater and licensed Sheet Metal Worker. Aka duct work

Mads, two thoughts: 1. You will need a drain from the drip-tray. Lead it into the shower drain if possible. It's fresh water, so it easily goes stinky in the bilge. Or collect it. It is distilled water. 2. The cooling water discharge can go well above the water-line. Just put a little piece of PVC pipe as a spout in the outlet so the water doesn't dribble down the hull and leave a stain.

I would never open the hull for the drain of an A/C.What is better than a through hole? Yes, no trough hole! Just thinking about forgetting to close it at sea and laying on Stbrd side. On my boat I do have that with the bathroom sink. 20° and water stays inside the sink. 5° more, it is in the boat. If you don’t want to put it to the bilge, I would use a small container with a pump. Like you can find it on every “condensation” laundry dryer. These systems bring the water 80cm up, no problem. A hole in the boat at that height I would consider to be ok. This Pump container can have an interlock, that prevents the A/C from running, when the pump fails and when you need distilled water you can collect it, too. With such a setup, I would say, you could use the A/C while sailing. I would never even consider that, with a hole that close to the water line that is open at the other side. Hilsen

I can't remember where I saw it but there is a manufacture that makes an air-conditioning unit that runs on 24VDC. Supposed to be pretty efficient too. Depending on the amp hour size of your battery bank you could run the unit without the inverter losses of AC appliances while living on the hook. Believe the new Hylas 57 uses those air conditioners and they tout they can run them for 8 hours with the standard battery. That would be a blessing in the Caribbean.

Hey Mads, our old unit just crapped out and I was hoping to look at the variable output unit as an option...but it appears that they only sell these units through their "dealer network". Which seems to be code for not Defender or West Marine. I'm guessing this is just sold by companies who do marine A/C system installs. I do not know if a company like that will sell to a DIYer and I'm a little afraid of the price if they did. I'm more afraid of the price if they did the install.
