Dear Mads, Do not forget ventilation in your kitchen island for the fridge. When I bought my boat they had forgotten that and the fridge compressor was constantly running like crazy. Adding a few slots around the bottom and a few around the top side created the draft necessary to evacuate the hot air. Cheers

Hi Mads, you’re making good progress! Don’t underestimate how much you’ll use the kitchen island as a support when the boat is under sail. You’ll lean against it with your whole weight, possibly even with two people. Just keep that in mind for the structural supports of the box (I saw you just screwed plywood on plywood).

Hey Mads, It's about time you got a label machine to label all these pipes and cables you are installing at points along their route. Doing it as you install will save hours of figuring out which pipe/cable you need to fix later. (I.E in two years time in the middle of an ocean storm!!)

You should take a small scrap of plywood from the "kitchen island's" toe kick, and drill a hole in it. Now try bolting the plywood scrap to the stainless tank frame. It looks like the bolts you have are much to long and will puncture the fuel tank when you bolt the island on. The piece of scrap will let you see if the bolts are going to hit the tank, and shorten them if necessary. Without being able to see the bolts if they are to long, your first indication of a problem might just be a fuel leak when you fill the boat for the first time.

Hey make those notches for the turbuckles a little wider so you don't have to fuss to get that island on if you you move it. Also make an access port on the side of it so you don't have to move the entire thing to work on the tank and refrigerator. Portals could look like drawers but are removable. Make those shelves removable as well. Don't secure them to the island. It will cut down on weight if you have to move it.

@Dean-hs3vq4 жыл бұрын
Blisters are probably in the paint system, you need a sealer/primer then finisher/topcoat. Water gets under/through the paint and looks like osmosis, it's not. Also petroleum will penetrate paints and blister. This is common in moorings/anchorages with fuel on the surface or creosote from pilings eg. Usually around the waterline. Good two pack paints and primers help but aren't impregnable. Also the previous repaired area may have had a surface contamination problem, like wiping with an oil based thinner pre prime. ( turps or paint thinner) Meths is a good pre-prime/paint wipe down medium. It air dries rapidly and leaves no residue and it's cheap. Cheers

Mats, great work as always. But I would never again use the clear plastic tubes of the tank connection kit. I have the same tank and after one year of use I got in trouble with my engine because of air bubbles in the diesel suction hose. I found that these tubes easily crack over time at the top end of the connection plate. I replaced them with diesel rubber hoses using ty-raps to fit them tight

Mads wonderful job on the island and tank! That said, there is absolutely nothing positive to say about a toploaded fridge, it is a pure pain in the hiney.
@Garryck-14 жыл бұрын
*"there is absolutely nothing positive to say about a toploaded fridge"* What utter rubbish. There is one VERY positive thing about top-loading fridges. Front-loading fridges spill all the cold air out every time you open them, so then the fridge has to run a lot longer to cool all the warm air you've let in. Top-loading fridges don't let the cold air out, so they run a lot less often, saving A LOT of power. And anything you can do to save power on a boat is worthwhile.

Re Toe rail: My current boat, a 1980 30 footer has an anodized Aluminum channel with oval holes for attachment flexibility. After 40 years it is still in almost new condition. There must be lots of 38 foot or longer boats being scrapped. The rig replacement cost often exceeds the boat's value so a shroud failure in a breeze and the hull becomes a source of recycled lead and parts. If you don' t like that idea you could machine your own teak toe rails at a much lower cost than new aluminum ones. My previous boat covered the hull/deck joint that way . Teak rails didn't have all the attachment possibilities and needed more attention but were a beautiful break to an otherwise fiberglass expanse. You need access to the underside of the joint for the bolts and have to use 5200 to make it leak proof.

Yes, but I would use stainless spring-clip type hose clamps on those instead of worm-drive. You can get them closer to the edge because the worm-drive head is wider than the band, while the spring-type clips are all the same width.

I would recommend installing a second inspection port on the other end of your fuel tank. With the baffle in the middle of the tank, you may have difficulty at some point in the future getting to the other side of the tank to clean out any gunk that may accumulate. Also, are you concerned at all about the possibility of the Pex tubing chafing where it goes through the tight fit of your limber holes? Great video, keep up the good work.
