Aww, Mads, I have been away from the You Tubes for so long I forgotten how amazing your videos are. Just taking a minute out from my day to say "You Rock!" and, if it is of any interest, our 3 layers of epoxy and 422 on Kasandra show absolutely no return of the blisters, two years on.

How easy you take those massive amounts of work is astonishing. And you do it so consistent and regular - every week. This is the true hero-ism of this project.

Athena looks good with her new bottom all refreshed. Can't wait to see her copper pants on. Mads, you are a dedicated, motivated fellow. To put out these vlogs every week while working on the boat and holding down a full time job is incredible. And the attention to detail is second to none.

Oooo, I cringed when you opened the box of 3M pads. May want to double check and make sure they're not too coarse. Just getting caught up on your videos of the Athena refit. My Gawd man, I would have lit fire to her by now. Surly she didn't wasn't designed this way and some of these little gems are modifications made during her lifetime that have gone bad. I know you have to really enjoy doing the work on her otherwise you could have gotten a 2nd job and bought a new boat. I'm truly impressed with your patients and attention to detail. Athena will be the loveliest, most sea worthy, and most modified Warrior ever to sail. I've really enjoyed the videos so far and plan to watch till the end. At some point I'm sure she'll get back in the water. Fair winds.

A beautiful compromise... Was I the only one who noticed that Mads has compromised in this latest video? With all of the sailing channels I have subscribed to, there are only three or four that I truly look forward to each week. Your Vlogs are most definitely in this group. Following your journey has been inspiring, to say the least. Your dedication and attention to detail is stellar. Your insistence on fixing absolutely every little detail that you find wrong is a true indicator of your character. And, the fact that you are constantly researching, learning, and asking questions is really paying off! Athena is really coming together beautifully. Keep up the great work! And, for the record, you have well surpassed "Pretty Dang Spiffy"!

Good job, good friends!! Two comments: WEST SYSTEM set you up nicely. That's a few thousand dollars worth of materials. They are the best by far; all I use. Second: When applying tape stick down the first 2", then walk in the direction you want to stick it to, pulling out about 8' from the roll. Line it up with your pencil line from that point (8' away) sighting down the tape and pencil line and just stick it to the hull from there. If it's off, just pull it outwards away from the hull, realign and re-stick.Then pull out another 8' without breaking it, and repeat the process. By doing it this way you avoid the waves from sticking it in 1' increments, and will end up with a much straighter line. Hope that's clear...

i would watch using the discs on the sander they are a lot more abrasive than the plain scotchbrite pad and you could damage your barrier coat , the type of pad you have for the sander looks like a gasket cutter pad for removing engine gaskets
@henrymorgan39826 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. The epoxy may be "hard", but the abrasive pad plus power sander might erase all the hard work!

MADS! Those brown 3M pads are WAY too coarse for taking off amine blush! They will actually sand and EAT away your fresh spiffy new barrier coat! I use those to sand and polish stainless steel and other metals, those 3m pads take off a surprising amount of material VERY quickly. Granted, your orbital sander runs at a much slower RPM than my pneumatic sanders and grinders, but the coarseness of brown is still much for cured epoxy. I would HIGHLY recommend that you test first with the Red 3m pads (medium) and the Blue (fine). I believe the Red will be plenty to take off and key the surface before anti-foul.
@CheersWarren6 жыл бұрын
Kraken I agree I've had a box of coarse hand pads for years and they never get used much and never for any fine work ....but cured epoxy is very hard so it might be just the thing .I repaired a couple of keels and it was hard work sanding between coats as it cured slow being a lead keel . I would use the pads wet as they don't clog and stay sharp longer but that's really messy so not many people do that . It will be interesting to see what he does! Cheers Warren
@Pat.Mustard6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, don’t do it Mads. We used those to grind aluminium back when I was a welder. They’re more like gentle grinding disks than a scotch pad.
@misterprofessor35116 жыл бұрын
You guys are missing the point. Removing more material will necessitate adding more coats of epoxy, which means more processes and more multi-part episodes, which is really the goal here. Add 2mm, remove 1.95mm. Repeat. Never go sailing.
@geraldhenrickson74726 жыл бұрын
In an orbital sander I think they may work quite well. On a disc sander, even at a low RPM, they would be far too much. I guess we will see.

Hubba Hubba indeed! As always great, well thought out information. It is good to see some support for the product too, as a few have stated there are times that you cannot take shortcuts or buy cheap tools or applicators or it will cost you double in the end. I am interested to see if the Scotchbright disc will be too course. Your whole series has taught me a good standard if I wish to go there. That goes for each new system or components on your boats, you should be proud of what you are actually teaching by doing this.

I too have used west systems 105/206/422 along with the white pigment additive. You don't have to prep your work with a coat of epoxy, you can, but your mixture with the 422 is the same thing except it has the barrier additive also. There is nothing wrong with what he is doing here. It adds more layers, that's it. you can also add the pigment additive to the mix as well which will give it more color to cover and give you a uniformed color prior to painting.

hi Martin , re Mads as instructional video actor, I'm sure that's why they are sponsoring him , he does a great job of making the use of their epoxy look doable for amateurs and provides good feed back on their products. I do have a problem with west system with the amine blush chemistry . It's always on your mind when using it and more modern epoxy don't have as big a problem.......... if you did not notice the amine blush early in multi-applications you could compromise the bond on all the subsequent layers. They need to improve the chemistry. I would prefer to use Vinyl ester resins that are way more chemical resistant , but they are expensive and hard to work with too as well as not easy to obtain BUT they are the industrial standard for all chemical attach situations and used in chemical plants all over the world in conditions way worse that simple underwater applications. Cheers. Warren

I’ve really loved this series. I’m a new sub and was initially attracted to your channel a couple weeks ago. Can’t say enough how I’ve truly appreciated the detail and considerations surrounding this work as someone who’s never owned a sailboat before and has decided he wants to buy one within a couple years. One of the issues I’m working through in my mind is whether I should focus my buying research on aluminum hulls or GRP. The type of maintenance required for either is what I’m looking into now, and most especially how intensive that maintenance might be. This series has gone a long way toward showing me what I might have to contend with every so many years with a GRP boat. Thanks!

Hi there. I’ve only just found your channel and have thoroughly enjoyed your videos which I’ve spent far to much time watching over the past week some of it while retiring the navigation instruments on board. Well done. I realise this is a little late but just a quick comment on cleats. Buy as big as possible. I’ve had my Tradewind 35 for 14 years and this year I found myself rafted up in the Isle of Scilly with two other boats, one on Esther side. My boat has reasonable sized cleats but I could definitely of done with bigger. Bearing in mind there were three boats rafted. I had two lines to the mooring buoy, a breast line to each boat on starboard and port plus I really could have done with putting some springs to the adjoining boats so the cleats were well and truly overloaded. In fact I ended up having to use my centres cleats to their fore and aft cleats. I use much small lines than our proposed 16mm despite the 8 plus ton displacement. .

It is too late now, but the next time you barrier coat a hull consider putting the first coat of anti-fouling on before the epoxy reaches full cure. I did mine when the epoxy had not yet given off amine blush and was still soft enough to indent with a thumb nail. That gives an extra strong bond between the barrier coat and the first coat of anti-fouling. Mine has held up very nicely for 21 years. A huge added plus was that I didn't have to do any more glorious, glorious sanding before applying anti-fouling.
