Madds I have used those steel mono element VHF radio antennae on mirror mounts for trucks and 4wd vehicles in the past. Longer examples are susceptible to excessive flexing resulting in harmonic effects and as a consequence they have a tendency to eventually break off at the base. Also I had a base station with a 10db gain antenna mounted on a tall mast where I lived for a while in a remote region of the Australian outback. If memory still serves that far back at my age, then when you use coax cable over a certain length (up a mast for example) it is a good idea to switch to heavier coax with stouter copper shielding for optimum results.

Great plan. If you get a warm afternoon, take Athena out for a harbor cruise. You may want to mount the wiring trough lower and run the cables so they are closer to the hinge edge of the door. Less of a bend to get to the breakers. Oh, and Athena needs a proper boot stripe and cove stripe in future, but don't delay the cruising. Take her south and you can cruise year round.

Good luck. My 30 year history of these kinds of projects says you will get done a small fraction of your goal. And that's doing it full time, as I do now. If you want to leave the dock in six months with a seaworthy boat, then no frills allowed like NMEA 2000 gadgets.
@danielbuckner21673 жыл бұрын
Oh I think if he has the boat ready to live on then that will keep the peace. If the head and v berth and galley aren't totally ready then it will be an unhappy boat. Besides if they are going to make a life together Ava has to realize you dont always control the schedule on a sailboat, weather and how far away the correct part you need control whether you are stuck someplace, maybe even at a dock or worse yet on the hard. K think she gets that so as long as they can be comfortable it will be OK.

Enemy, eh? -Or NMEA? :D O183 is definitely the enemy, but 2K is a friend. Haha! DIN rail and cable duct is definitely the way to go. The inside of that panel will look super spiffy, I am certain. Remember you can get all sorts of other things that will mount to DIN rail such as fuse-holders, breakers, and relays. You will probably have some circuits you never want shut off such as bilge pumps and smoke/CO detectors where the fuses or breakers will be safely tucked away from prying hands. I believe putting the controls for macerator pumps in a locked cabinet counts as locked-off too. I used a keyed switch for ours which takes a special key to turn on.

Speaking from experience I would say its better to mount the chart plotter in a way that faces you, rather than at a 90 degree angle on the panel. I realise you're planning a PC plotter with large screen, so maybe you won't find it an issue, but I've found that its much more comfortable to use the plotter when its directly or close to infront of your eye line.
@WreckDiver993 жыл бұрын
AC and DC Separation is about electrical noise, especially when dealing with electronic signals such as your chart plotter. My understanding is that many of the marine grade items have heavily shielded cables to help allieviate this, because...well...it's a boat, not a house. LOL. Gotta hand it to you Mads, I would have been so frustrated and so discouraged by all the trials and issues you've had...and you just keep pushing on. I freaked out over blowing $25USD on a project that failed miserably, and I just look and say "that was $25...that was 3 days of groceries, that was gas for the car, that was emergency savings if sh!t goes sideways, and I just burned it up". Yea, projects and me are usually "I really want to do that, but what if it fails, I just threw out a bunch of money for nothing". Love what you do, and really hope you get to Michigan in your voyages! We have some amazing shipwrecks to discover here!

Yes Mads, things are looking great. I will be cheering for you and your 6 month deadline. I think it’s a good goal. A little bit of a reach, but just enough to challenge you. BTW, I keep forgetting to mention. I know you want to put in more side lites, but I think Athena looks super sleek the way she is. Also, you seem to be open to suggestions. Clark, of Emily and Clark’s Adventures just put out a battery video. He has a unique, but VERY interesting way of combining LA and Lithium batteries that is very interesting. He is willing to work with people who are interested The guy has a brilliant technical mind(not to diminish you in any way. I have learned a wealth if information from both of you, and your hydronic installation has been immensely helpful for me), and I though I’d share this with you to see what you think. With his technique of combining both types of batteries you may never(or not for a very long time) need to buy batteries again. He has already told me that when I am ready to build my system he will help me design things to my requirements. I think this would be a very interesting collaboration if you are so interested. I am absolutely impressed and motivated by your ingenuity and drive. Thank you for all you do. I will post a link to Clark’s battery video below. Much appreciation. Great plan. Remember to mount blocks to drill into where you'll be running conduit before insulating the hull so to save yourself that post oopsy headache. With full time work on the ship you'll do well as you have a plan and the OCD to stick to it. I believe you'll finish with time to spare and account for hiccup's along the way. Since you already have a form for the ruder I would build another one for a spare! I watched another video where the rudder was damaged and they had no way to repair it where they were. Also, I would mount the toe-rail brackets to the hull with one bolt. That way they will conform to the arc of the toe-rail automatically.

Like the power and electronics a lot. One more essential element is ti run all 240v cables in conduit. Plastic will do although current regs may call for something else for fire resistance. Other than that, you have it nailed! Like the engine gateway. The standard instruments give very little information. You should be alble to replicate this on the cart plotter or MFD displays which is always useful (oil/temp etc ). The job list is daunting from this side of the screen but you've got good incentive and motivation for when she moves in! Good luck! Great video.
