youtube video with 12k views to the best reviewed musical in the history of the west end and a finale that encapsulates a screamingly funny plot and a tear-jerkingly dignified tribute to the second world war's foremost unsung hero. bravo you lot

LYRICS Find a girl and build a home, son So my father said to me But the winds, they bear me onward And they call me to the sea CHORUS : If its down its down together If its up, its up as one So sail on boys, through stormy weather Soon the journey will be done Not for me the plow and furrow, not for me the feather bed, not for me the farmer’s daughter, to the waves my heart is wed CHORUS Lift your hearts to the horizon, Leave your fears upon the shore, this one life is for the living, and we ask for nothing more CHORUS X2

This song gives me goosebumps, so pure and simple but so poignant and says so much. Love it so much, as does my daughter, so seems to be our constant soundtrack!

One of my favourites and has been stuck in my head the last week in particular. Saw Operation Mincemeat back in December and listen to the soundtrack almost daily now!

I love being able to time travel to the ‘making of’. Are there any more ‘making of’ videos beyond the 6? I loved how, in performance, you’ve combined the sea shanty boys with the land-lubber celebration. To me, it was the best example of your facile talent in shifting between characters in a breath! Certainly the woven songs served the shifts, but I am astonished each time as I see the shifts so clearly in your physicality. I’ve been enjoying this show since New Diorama Theatre and am gearing up to see it again tonight (for a 5th time, with at least 2 more booked). Thank you again for sharing! ❤️💙🎭 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Saw it the other night, and what an amazing show. Hugely impressive writing, staging, and performance, and great fun. I loved how it worked on so many levels - as comedy, as satire, as song and dance, as social commentary, and as just a fascinating story. This song is an excellent example - it helps make a quick switch from the basement to the sea, and focusses the story on the difficulty in delivering the, er, "cargo" to its destination, and the danger and nerve wracking elements of that part of the story. But later it comes back, unaltered, as wonderful social commentary contrasting the huge collective sacrifices that so many made ("if it's down, it's down together; if it's up, it's up as one") with the relentless narcissism of the upper class twits running the operation. A description that sounds a bit dry and misses out the great fun of the whole thing. Fantastic job, folks.

Saw 'Operation Mincemeat' at the Fortune in November. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! ❤ Bought the soundtrack, which is currently playing on a loop at our house. 'Sail On, Boys' is one of my favourites along with 'Useful' and 'Dear Bill' and 'Born To Lead' and... Well, all of them I guess😊. Thank You❤

It sounds a lot like the chorus to a folk song 'down by the laganside' which goes, to a very similar tune: And when we dance We'll dance together When we cry We'll hold each other And when we love We'll love forever Down by the laganside I'd be interested if it was an inspiration!

Fantastic work. Although frustrating as well, because I was looking for this as an old traditional song with many other performances across the years, argh 😂 Damn fine work

I like it a lot [@David] May I also confirm the starting note - is it A below middle C? Shamefully, the last time my piano was tuned was when Felix played it at least six years ago! Your rehearsal piano is very bright

It’s really similar to the hymn “Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy,” which also has a nautical theme! kzbin.info/www/bejne/apW4h62bdtudhcUsi=gZv2hbc8CVE_WyrG

It's a great song, but it's not a sea shanty. Hope the show was a belter.. I shall look deeper !

I'm not sure this really catches the heart of what a shanty is. It sounds like a Disney movie sort of song, as best I can tell it lacks the sort of roughness that traditional shanties have.

I agree with the commenter above, they have nice voices, and "classier" vibrato than you would expect from a bunch of sea dogs. The chord progression, melody and rhythm are spot on for a sea shanty.

@@BlackLynx4607a sea shanties are meant to be done with work such as pulling ropes. They're missing that shuffle feel.
