What a great practice day. Good friends, the Blue Angles, America's cup boat; American Magic, steady wind, warm sun, and we only broke a couple of things.

Every time I see seeker I'm reminded of the fact it's the boat the internet built as you say Doug. It's amazing how far she's come. Can't wait to see her fully dialed in and fully crewed!

Astounding, from beginning to present. Drat, I missed seeing you in Pensacola, moved back East after last hurricane. Pensacola’s entire strand of beaches are the finest in FL, Our favs are Santa Rosa, secluded, (except for Blue Angels overhead), brilliant white sugar sand and the fishing can’t be beat! You OK men are real pirates, scabbing that stunning treasure boat together. Sail on!

I've been following this build for probably 15 years now. I've been trying to get out to see her since you guys made it to Pensacola and have been busy with work or family stuff every weekend since. I live in Pensacola, it kills me that I haven't come out to see you guys yet. I'm working on it, though. Finally bought kayak racks so I can actually launch my kayaks from somewhere other than my house. I hope to see you guys real soon!

It is good to see Seeker under sail power. I was surprised that you were getting 20º of heel with that light wind and only a bit of the mainsail with the top twisted to the point of it producing little power. In the shot where you commented about only the lowest sheet having any tension, that was because the upper panels were luffing with no pull. Do you have enough buoyancy to add more lead to the keels? Seems like she might be under ballasted.
@josephcarver967
@josephcarver967 Жыл бұрын
If it can't stand up to full sail in what appears to be 12 knots of wind, that's no good. Less weight aloft would help as would more ballast.
@haydenwatson7987
@haydenwatson7987 Жыл бұрын
@@josephcarver967 I cannot remember if they did stability testing on Seeker when they launched her. If not, it could and probably should be done at some point. The process is fairly simple with the addition of weight in the form of barrels filled with water along the rail and a measurement of the increase in the angle of heel for a given weight.
@haydenwatson7987
@haydenwatson7987 Жыл бұрын
@BobsYourUncle I do not disagree with anything you say. Partly my comments were because I have heard things said on the video and in the comments about how much she heels. It is very likely that the biggest "change" will be in the mindset of those who sail on her as to what is her normal. My previous boat was a Clipper 26 which has an unusual hull shape. It has a 14º deadrise and vertical sides that are connected with a 6"ø radius chine. The gave her tremendous form stability at 15º heel and it took a lot to get her beyond that angle. Of course, once you got to that point, she would heel over to 45º and round up head to wind. Because of that, my family got very used to 15º of heel because the boat was almost always at that angle. My current boat is a Catalina 30 with a much more traditional tulip shaped hull. There is no hard deadrise and what there is, is closer to 20º but the hull has lots of roundness. This make her gradually increase angle of heel as the wind builds up but she gets quite a bit stiffer as she approaches the 20º mark. Trying to sail her in a moderate breeze while limiting the heel to 15º is just a recipe for frustration. As a result, we, as a family, have learned that 20º is our new happy place.

Flew hydofoils in Tampa Bay back in the 80's on windsurfers. They were lethal!!! Sailed a junk rig yacht in Carrick roads, Falmouth, UK and found it comfortable and safe being able to rig from cockpit - even in F8 storm! It's great to witness the 21st Century mix with the 18th century out there on Pensacola Bay. Thanks.

She looks a tad tender, she gets some heel on in light wind, I wonder how she'd handle a decent gust out of the blue and large waves? I still don't understand why you'd go for such a complicated and heavy rig set up, just a nice simple ketch rig, even just a cat ketch rig would be so much more efficient and easy to use, especially if you are ever single handed. The pro's over the junk rig are numerous, I can't see any pro's of the junk rig
