You see, now finally an informative video. Thank you. Most these guys post videos of how they pull a line to set a reef as if we all have the same boat and rigging. Your video actually discussed the rigging and some good ideas how to improve it.

Thank you. I was 99% sure I understood the reefing process but the drawings cinched it in my head. Now I just need to go do it!

love the front tackle but would not put 6 holes in a small spot on my boom to install a winch

Perfect mix of diagram, then photo of the actual pieces installed. Once the clew cringle has been brought securely to the boom...do you think some form of outhaul is needed to also secure the horizontal plane? Some set ups seem to have the leech cringle pulled diagonally back and down - which looks like a less secure vertical fixing of the aft reef point.

Nice. The best comprise I've been between factory and really complicated systems that I don't want to figure out. Thanks for posting. Ah, put plenty of goop in the threads - I don't think galvanic/weak would be an issue...at least in the next 10 years. They do make aluminum screws, if you want to go purist, however.

I love the videos, Kim! One comment I have about this one in particular is that the upgrades all are putting the lines forward requiring people to go on deck during potentially tense moments. It would be cool to highlight other options that boats have such as single line reefing.

Great! Glad to hear. This is just a basic system that works well for us. Agree that some of the systems that run back to the cabin top are nice because of not having to go forward. However, the more blocks that the line has to go through and around can be a problem, resulting in the foot not getting pulled very tight and the luff getting tons of tension. This is the big reason we personally like everything up front. It does mean being comfortable going up front in nasty conditions, which doesn't work for everyone. We always have harnesses tethered to jack lines when necessary. Your point is valid though. We will cover other reefing systems at some point. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching!!

in a smallish boat, you can actually operate both systems while standing in the cockpit descent

Could you explain how you dealt with the mast track being too short? Unless something is changed with the track or stopper, then pulling down on the reef tack will still pull directly against the slug on the luff that's butted up against the mast track stopper. (See video at 1:22 minutes.) Removing the stopper will fix that, but they you would need to thread the lower luff back onto the track when hoisting the main again to shake out the reef. I ask this question because I have the same problem on my boat.

Hi Graham, The reef cringle, or tack clue, is higher than it normally would be when hooked to the reef horn. So the horn is at a lower point. This still doesn't leave much room for adjustment, however. So I am going to add some track to the bottom of my existing track. The short track will be mounted with machine screws in threaded holes in the mast, that way you can remove the short piece when installing or removing the main each season. It's on my list of stuff to do! Thanks for the question, this is something I should have addressed in the video. Happy Sailing!

@1:05 I realize that there is a big difference in "available options" between something like a beneteau 50 / jeanneau 49 / etc and a j22 / merit 25 / etc. But how do the smaller boats continue to come like this from the builder? Bigger boat upgrades = solar, water, comfort. Small boat upgrades = basic functionality and performance. 🤔

Stainless screws directly into alloy will over time galvanically corrode at the tapped thread. You will ultimately have to thru-bolt these.
