While washing the deck don't forget to soak your lines in fresh water too. As always spot on..

Nice! Timely addition to this series on buying a used sailboat. It teaches us not only the ownership expectations, but also about the dangers of poorly maintained used vessels for sale out there.

When I buy the boat will have as little external teak as possible. I don't want to be spending half my day taking care of it. And hour to rinse the deck and wipe down the stainless is easy. Especially in the morning if there is dew on the deck. Scrub, rinse, wipe, rum drinks!

Very informative 👏 I did not know about the teek,, may the Lord almighty 🥰 ❤️‍🔥 😇 be with you, Amen.

I wanted to emphasize your point about gelcoat cracks... here in the temperate zone, where it freezes in winter, if water gets into those cracks they shortly get much larger as the freeze-thaw cycle works to expand them. That's not an issue you have to deal with in paradise, but if you're sailing in the wicked North East, say, it can get to be a pretty big problem, pretty fast.

This exact thing worries me when I'm ready to buy my boat. What didn't they do like the daily maintenance and checks.....are they going to be honest about it....ugh
@saltysassy958

Not daily unless you're buying a crewed mega yacht. Most sailors defer maintenance before they are ready to sell a boat. It's just the way it works. Assume everything is a piece of crap and if you don't know what our looking at pay someone who does.

they didn't, and they will not be. Helps to just get that out there in the open. people have lives, they cant sit at the dock all day to ::check notes:: wash their deck daily with fresh water. lol. also you have to figure out why they are selling the boat in the first place. if its an older person near the end of their life, its obvious they cant handle it anymore. but if its a middle aged person that says they love sailing like they love their wife and girlfriends... be very cautious of what they are not telling you. lol

Boat maintenance app, or spreadsheet? I can’t remember $#!t without this kind of organization. The charter fleet must use something.

Al believes keeping water out of your vessel is essential so when you Go sailing you experience the Rythem of the waves from above the surface. Much better than the alternative as rumor has it.

Before you buy make sure you go over the maintenance log dates and engine hours and match it to all the invoices...if the owner doesn't have it...do not buy that boat because the tight ass never did the maintenance.

How is this is even a topic for a video? Isn't this a no brainer? Just now leaving my armchair for a sailing club here in Colorado but even I know that salt water and sand are merciless.

With the increase in renewable energy there is always a start up company that wants to build a tidal turbine. They submerge these massive machines...... they last a month!

its all no-brainer. except you have a very small brain if you think you have to wash your deck literally every day, even when the boat is just sitting there. just clean her up when you dock. I have a fake owl that i put on the boom to scare the poop chutes away. seems to be somewhat effective but never 100% on the larger sea birds. and anti-foul is vastly dependent on your location. areas with high flowing rivers turning the water brackish toward the fresh side will have less growth than pure marine environs etc. i built a contraption from a small stiff deck brush and some PVC pipe to reach under and clean my boat in the slip. effective enough between haulouts. wont take barnacles off but does a great job on algae and that grassy stuff.

where do you get all that fresh water to wash your deck??? Especially if your not that close to a water source. Also, what's the cost to get that water?

One of the most informative channels out there. You seem to know your shit. Well done. What's with the copper anti foul paint, is it all that?
@dumpjeep
@dumpjeep 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the need for new bottom paint every 1 or 2 years. The paint does not go bad. As long as you have sufficient thickness of paint you are good. You just have to make sure you sand the paint just before launching so that the biocide metals don't oxidize before being submerged. Basically just have to give the bottom a quick scuff.
@dumpjeep

@ABC gang you are describing 'ablative' antifouling, not hard modified epoxy. Hard bottom paints account for the overwhelming majority, and are required on powerboats (that soft ablative would strip right off at speed) and also on slower moving boats in certain areas where there is heavy growth, like the tropics or New England. Ablative is good for lakes and slow seasonal boats with a lot of use, but the hard modified epoxies still rule the world of antifouling. Hard bottom paints contain metal biocides, like copper, that discourage growth, and can also be burnished and sometimes even polished to a high shine, which also discourages growth as it doesn't give the organisms a good porous surface to grab hold of. It does not flake off and will work as long as its present and prepared correctly.

It also depends where your boat is, how warm the water is and the quality of the anti foul paint.
