A smart boat seller would post the Captain's list of questions (with answers) directly in the listing... That would save both the seller and the buyer a lot of time by reducing the phone time required for common questions about the age of the sails, the rigging, etc.

Perhaps Chris can address some quality issues with these newer production boats? I know there are myths and rumours about keels that fall off and chopped-strand-mat spray-on hulls that crumple. Nonetheless, there has to be some quality of construction consideration made when making a purchasing decision. I tend to like the overbuilt heavier boats like Pacific Seacraft and Island Packet (a Lady K favorite!). Is there a quality and safety difference with these boats when it comes to blue water sailing?
@Shepherdservices3177 ай бұрын
As he always says 90% of sailing happens in island hopping and costal cruising. Both he and lady K primarily focus on cruising the Caribbean. We aren't focused on "blue watter" boats. Though most of the vessels he suggest are rated for just that. IMO it could be that some 80s vessels were built "better" for the time. But that was 40yrs ago, there is new technology, and those boats have been sitting in sailing 40yrs! Who wants to pay 50k for a boat that's fucking ancient and falling apart?

All good and thank you for telling truth. You skipped some very good boats, maybe because they are from less known European brands. Ie HANSE, ELAN, Very popular in Eastern Europe. We rent them from time to time in the med. They are very good sailors. I do not completely agree on your opinion about racing oriented cruisers. OK for small ones, but FIRST from 40ft+ are very liveable. OK you loose some volume to lengh , but its a tradoff for PERF. Also try one day a RM or JPK or JBoat if you want a cruiser that can go faster than wind. (yes they can but not for 50 grands, but for 100 sure) . For us the real criteria for a good volume ratio is the articulated transom / bathing platform. So a flat rear end, larger beam, and obviously not before 2005. These boat have also more righting moment so they heal less at a given speed than older boats.

You're right Chris,; Nobody should be taking advise from that guy....Why? Because he talked his girl into going on an Offshore Adventure with him; Taking rough seas across the bow, his boat started taking on water, and he didn't have a plan for that eventuality. Candice is Panicking because the cabin soles are floating, and guess what? His Bilge Pump doesn't work!! They start bailing, but can't keep up. Finally he gets on the VHF, and a passing Motor Vessel comes and lends him a Portable Bilge Pump to keep them from sinking - miles offshore. The through hull for the knot transducer got punched in, but "He never checked it because it didn't work" He Obviously Never Checked the Bilge Pump Either!....We all make mistakes in life, but that is just gross negligence, putting someone else's life in danger. His girl had the good sense to go home. So if you want to defend him commenters; Watch that video - if "Lady K" still has it up, and decide for yourself...

There are times when I can't figure out where the K guy is coming from, and as you have mentioned, he is at times lacking in original ideas for content, but that is a common affliction in all of sailing video land. Other opinion here, Chris has saved me some time and possibly money by directing me away from Lady K. Lady K is entirely TOO believable. That's dangerous. Plus Chris has a lot of good points here. The KZbin sailors have given all of us a very....disillusioned view of sailing life. So, before I found Chris, I found lady K. Probably because Lady K plays to that KZbin algorithm more than Chris does. So, discrediting lady k in such a manner does well for the unsuspecting wannabe sailor by steering them away from the frauds of KZbin. 🤷♂️

A $50,000 2001 Jeanneau is in no way ready to sail from Grenada to the US. You'll be replacing sails, rigging, and likely a major engine service on foreign soil with sky high prices and no place to live. Maybe you can limp it to Trinidad and Barbados. If the goal is to spend a few months down there rock on. Treat it like a hotel and dump it for $10k less you paid at the end. To sail to Miami is pure fantasy.

You know you can put a Length minimum into the search? I can only say what's happened around me from shopping around and finding even worse condition of listings on YW. The brokers are usually into powerboats because their big money is coming in from the six and seven figure sales and don't know anything about sailing or sailboats. When the owner is lazy and negligent, that's a great entry to rip into the price where you like it at 15k and if they don't want it or you don't want to do the work move on. I mean I don't care if the listing is 40k, in this economy, if you give that to them, you're probably still an idiot.

Your estimates for repairs are absolutely out of this world when your saying 70k replacement and repair costs on a boat that costs about 40k?? Ok dude, whatever you say.. you must rely on other scandalous people with an agenda to tell you what things are needed and just how much they cost installed at full price (and only premium parts the way your prices sound).. anyone with half a brain can save over 50% in costs for repairs just doing the labor yourself.. spending more on repairs than the boat itself just shows how unprepared someone was getting into something like this. More money than sense sort of deal! No need in making something simple like a vessel with a hull, a mast, sails and rigging, sky rocket into the price range of a modest home.. theres not enough going on to justify those kinda of costs.. I dont even have to meet you to know that I'm far more resourceful and much less gullible than you are.. but I'm not trying to teach people about boats.. I see a problem here!
