Thanks for the positive comments about van-living. The only irritating thing about vans is that people keep asking me if I'm homeless. If I had no van, I'd still have a nice tent and love that too.

Good for you guys! Get out there and see what you can! I'm older than you both and am looking to do an alternative lifestyle when i return to Oz, when i semi retire, but do it while you can guys! Start in your familiar waters, and do lots of shake down cruises as much as possible to get the boat right. Good luck and fair winds wherever you end up going!

you two are young at heart. you will have a good life. it is always the big ticket items that cost you. have a good look at those big items and have the nest egg to fix if needed. you have to be good at so many crafts ,so it does not go to someone elses labor cost, cause do not have the knowledge. do it right the first time and not go amature, it will bite you at the wrong time. this is and will be a challange, don't get frustrated . work and teach each other and learning from this life will make you stronger . people will envy you and some will ridicule. they are the scared and lost ones . Sail On!!!

Hi Harry and Sarah, renting would be far cheaper than a boat. When I bought my first boat at a good price I was speaking to a long term owner of multiple yachts, very enthused about my purchase. He said, there is no such thing as a cheap boat! 5 years later I have to admit he was more than right. Over 10 years or less be prepared to spend at least the original price or more than what you paid for it on maintenance. And that is not counting an engine or big ticket items. However you both will have a lot of fun. Best wishes.

Hey thanks for your comment. Not sure about Vancouver but there are plenty of liveaboard marinas in Victoria. A couple of the more desirable ones have long wait lists but it all depends on the size of your boat, you could get lucky!

Thats what I get for replying at the end of a long day...you are quite right. I like what you are doing. Alternative living at a time when conventional living is increasingly debt slavery, and some cannot even afford that. I like that sense of freedom and rebellion for sailors of any age.

There are also some very strong inconveniences of living in a sailboat, and the challenges are also big, this is not a lifestyle for everybody. Living in a boat requires a true passion for the sea, and the sea has many surprises. A sailboat is a sailboat not a house. There is also the repairs on the boat and an old say “A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money”.

I don't know where you're boat shopping, but I have never seen a sea worthy 26' boat for 5 or 6 grand... once you guys start to stretch your legs that dog is definitely going to need to have somewhere to go to the bathroom, unless you plan on hugging the shore everywhere you go.

A sailboat will depreciate a house will appreciate. Though when one considers property taxes over the years of home ownership ... And yet there are dock fees for a sailboat unless one is constantly on the move but then one needs to aty stationary to be able to hold a job. Maintenance on a sailboat or house. Unless one buys a new house or a new sailboat that can be somewhat equal or not. ANd then there is the quality of life on one or another. A sailboat's amenities compared to that of a house will differ drastically. W/E
@mrmrlee
@mrmrlee 6 жыл бұрын
The appreciate/depreciate argument can go either way as well... Houses where I live in the northeast USA are still well below what they were 10 years ago, many people here were foreclosed because they couldn't sell and get out of their mortgage because the loans were more than the house would sell for at the time. As to boat depreciation, I obtained my classic (1974) 32 foot sailboat for free in 2013, put about $3000 in to her and could get more than that if I were to sell. However, I agree that buying a new or nearly new boat is a choice that will depreciate quickly. As to maintenance, owning both a house and a sailboat, boat costs are a known quantity, as I have simplified the boat's systems and can repair or replace virtually everything myself. With a house, costs are higher, and it seems each year there is a new surprise expense.... From raccoons in the attic, carpenter ants, fleas and ticks, carpenter bees, poison ivy, paper wasps, fallen trees in storms, crazy neighbors, oil burner failure, roof leaks, neighborhood vandalism, flooded basement with septic tank issues, township legal woes with permitting and land use, we have had it all and then some. My wife has gotten Rocky Mountain spotted fever twice from local ticks, the neighbor across the street has alpha-Gal disease from a tick, and another neighbor has died from Lyme disease. For ease of maintenance, boat wins hands down.

Sarah, I don't mean to be too personal, but you look really familiar to me. Were you ever living aboard around Vanuatu, maybe with the alternative sailing community, or were you in the Omaha area of the midwestern U.S.? It's really bugging me. Maybe you were on a different video channel? Now that I hear that Harry is from NZ, I'm wondering if I may have met you around the Nelson, NZ area in 2015-16. Why am I sure I've seen you before. Even your voice sounds familiar. Sorry if I sound like a crazy stalker. I just remember faces to an annoying extent. By the way, I used to live on the SV Alvei. She's registered to Vanuatu, but travels between Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Vanuatu.
