On the second day of the sea trials we had quite a bit of wind so we had the chance to test some of the other sails. Nice bonus : another hull number 4 was launched when we were there.

Hey, almost seven and a half minutes in I was surprised to see the NACRA 15 sailing by. Back in the early '80s I had a NACRA 5.8 I loved to sail. I only sold it because I was sick and tired of parts being stolen off of it while in the storage yard at the marina.

The O-55 at speed (and I know that the seastate wasn't nearly extreme) had very little water coming up from the bows to the cabin / coachroof, plus zero healing. Pretty amazing! You guys should be extremely comfortable crossing any ocean - bon voyage!

Stupid question but does the 'FRA 5501' on the main stand for where it was built' FRA' (or maybe registered), the 55 stand for the length of the boat and the '01' maybe for your hull production number? If it doesn't then it's a really good coincidence.
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын

I presume one can steer down below out of the weather on Auto , truly stunning , I wonder when they will fit foils ?
@CatGreatcircle3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed you can manually steer from underneath the Bimini as well with a pretty good view forward due to the increased sliding door and front window height. To control the winches you still have to go “outside”. No foils for us please...
@steinjohansen31423 жыл бұрын
@@CatGreatcircle Why not? I presume foils would get the hulls higher up in the sea and reduce the hulldrag.(not lifting it completly up, but more than when you´r at anchor.) They could have a fold-down center-foil under the anchor-chain room, folding back between the hulls. This would also reduce the need of keels and rudderboards. An other thing about hull- design I don´t understand is, if you look at fishes and airplanes they are thicker in front and slims backwards. Every aerodynamic research conclude in that´s the most effective shape. Then why don´t catamaran fabricators use this knowledge to design their boats with doublebeds midships instead of in the aft? In my opinion naval architects are way to conservative, and slowing down progress of efficiency.
@greatpix2 жыл бұрын
Another stupid question: Since these boats have so many automated systems is there one that would release the main and other sails in case the wind threatened to tip the boat over, and can it react fast enough in a freak gust of wind? Or would it just try to come about? The latter seems more dangerous for anyone on board or anything not fastened down.
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын
Yes these systems exist. Not necessary on an Outremer

Why do you never see mask or boom furling systems on catamarans?
@CatGreatcircle3 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert but my guess would be that sail handling on a cat is most of the times fairly easy and the furling systems of the main, especially the mast furling systems will significantly reduce the sails performance
