In this video The Desert Sailor and firstmate demonstrate some basic line handling during hoisting the Mainsail and Jib and during tacking. We also give hints on trimming. This is a basic beginner sailor demonstration. We hope to make some more detailed videos like this in the future so subscribe and click the "bell" to get notified!
Winds on the historical data for the buoy out near Sentinel Island in Boulder Basin, Lake Mead (SBBN2) was 12-15 knots with gusts from 20-26 knots.

We had one Reef in our fully battoned mainsail and had what I think is I high cut 110 jib. But not sure.

Nice video. Looking at the snow and doing my sailing via KZbin while my boat is in the garage for the winter. Looks like a great day on the water.

I recently retired and have fallen in love with sailing. Having just finished ASA 104 in Puget Sound, I got a taste of challenging conditions and it was great! I really like the authenticity and fun feel of your videos. Your love of sailing really comes through. Keep it up! It is inspirational for me. Ben

Ya! If it's not fun then don't do it, right!? Although it can be tense sometimes, there is no doubt!

I sail out of Los Angeles harbor (hurricane gulch) it often blows 20 to 30 knots, these Coronado sailboats can really move when it gets blowing. It looks like you had a great time, thanks for sharing!

I was nervous taking her out in stronger winds because she is so light and her keel is not very deep. She's also taking on water from somewhere.... :(

Ya! I thought she would be going a little faster....I think I need to scrub the bottom!

After re-doing her bottom, and getting the right reefing and headsail size combo, she was fun in 25....but gust to 30...no fun.

I like how you approach setting your sails. I'm curious that you had to winch so hard on the jib halyard, for a sail that size I would expect to be able to raise it by hand. I also like that you're cleating the sheet to windward for the reasons you state - easier to release in a gust. Since you're already cross sheeted, you might want to try something I've started doing: I put a single wrap on the lee side winch and then run the sheet across to the windward winch for one or two more wraps. The two winches work together to let me sweat the sheet instead of using the slower winch handle. Pushing or pulling the sheet sideways amplifies the linier force on the line. The windward winch 'tails' the sheet while the lee winch allows the sheet to be drawn in. Now the belly between the winches can be trimmed by trimming the windward winch. It sounds more complicated than it is. One hand to apply force and the other to tail, alternating force between the two to maintain friction. Just pushing down with my weight applies almost as much force as using the handle and it's fast. I can even play the sheet by applying force to the sheet between winches while the tail is cleated.

Cool idea! I have used both winches too so I don't need multiple wraps on one winch.

Looks like fun. I have a Coronado 25 as well and experience a lot of weather helm in most conditions. Is this something you experienced as well? Thanks.

I have controlled weather helm with the correct combination of sails in the correct wind. I finally found her sweet spot, and then sold her! BUT, that said, she likes a large Mainsail and smaller than you'd think head-sail. Definitely going down wind, she sometimes had a weird "I am losing control of the tiller!" feeling. Or a "I can't get her to bear off feeling". Tweeking the Mainsail in or out was the solution. Also, the use of the traveler was key to successfully handling her weather or lee helm.
