Glad you enjoyed it. Simply amazing how beautiful that stretch of water remains. It gives us hope that somewhere that close to 45 million people can remain so pristine.

Glad you enjoyed and hope you find it useful. We loved the Channel Islands and comment often on the amazing destination that Southern California sailors have in their backyard, so to speak.

This was wonderful. I'm going to be visiting the islands for the first time in a couple weeks. I can't wait.

We used the following book as well. And found it to really help us understand the history - "California's Channel Islands: A History" by Frederic Caire Chiles. Enjoy your visit, they're a wonderful place!

Could you please provide some insight regarding the best time of year to cruise these ilslands?
@SailingGargoyle Жыл бұрын
We were there in the fall and the islands were relatively deserted. The big issue to watch for on Catalina at that time is the Santa Ana winds but they can also arise at other times of the year. Best time is likely summer though at all times be cautious and watch the forecast. We found these islands to be some of the more remote feeling Islands of our cruising. Easiest to reach "advanced cruising ground" we've found. Enjoy!

@@SailingGargoyle Are tides an issue?
@SailingGargoyle Жыл бұрын
@@SailingTheGreatLakes not a big issue but check your tide tables. I believe they were around two meters but it's been a few years. Also keep an eye on the tide table.

I'm curious - say that god forbid something really bad happens and the crew is forced to abandon a damaged or sinking vessel - what happens to the cats? I wasnt aware anyone ever took cats with them on boats. I didn't know that was a thing.
@SailingGargoyle3 жыл бұрын
great question! Actually cats on boats dates all the way back to ancient Egyptians. They're amazing swimmers and are quite at home in the small space of a boat. Dean has fallen in the water on a number of occasions at anchor and once while we under sail. Sam is in the water rarely and only intentionally. Yes, she jumps in the water on her own to swim. We have a throw cushion that they can sink their claws into so retrieval is fairly simple. When its rough we keep them downstairs. In case of a catastrophic accident that requires us to abandon ship we have a large self-inflating life raft that we would deploy. We keep a ditch bag stocked with emergency equipment and that includes cat food and pee pads. We also have an empty duffle we have next to the ditch bag that is solely intended for the cats. We know they would be quite unhappy to be stuffed in it while we transfer to the life raft but then again, we won't be very happy either. Note that actually abandoning a boat is a last resort as the boat typically remains afloat.

So much of this commentary is just not true. Not sure she got this or where to start in rebuttal. Get your info straight before you tell everyone you are an expert. So ...... having lived and worked there... just disregard what she has said . Go on your own with an experienced captain and crew. It is a very special place. Very special.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. Can you please be more specific? We used several books as our source of data and do try to be as accurate as possible. We would agree as well that this is a very special place and have often ranked it at the top of our list of places we've visited.
