Hey James, you might consider putting an auxiliary starting switch on that starter, somewhere wear it’s easily accessible if/when you have to bleed the engine.

Yep we talked about this on our last live stream, already have the switch on hand ready to wire up

A while back you guys put a new prop on your boat. I also have an allberg 30 and I have no way of knowing whether it's going to turn to port or starboard when I reverse out of the slip. Was wondering if you could share that info with me as to what prop you put on.
@SailorJames3 жыл бұрын
The only way to solve the backing up problem on an Alberg 30 is to sell it and buy a boat with a fin keel 😂😂😂 full keel boats just don’t back up straight no matter what you do, we walk ours out of the slip and never reverse out. Our new prop helped a lot with prop walk going forward but didn’t do much for reverse
@stevegem41553 жыл бұрын
@@SailorJames actually it is up for sale,but I was hoping I could solve that problem for the next guy. it's pretty sweet you should have a look at it . it's listed on sailboat listings.com look for the S.O.B. she's in seafoam green. I live in Michigan so she's in Cold storage right now if it doesn't sell I'll be dropping her back in the water and I'll be sailing the great lakes .enjoy your videos, you guys take care and thanks for the reply.

After all our mistakes on the topside painting we only ended up getting one coat on so it shows all kinds of marks, but as my buddy Noah once told me “never have a nice job on your boat, it will only stress you out” 😂

Is the rocker stopper a branded one or did you design it? Rough details?
@SailorJames3 жыл бұрын
howdy, its a branded one, they are a series of orange discs that you string onto a rope 12" apart and attach a mushroom anchor to the bottom to help keep it down. There are several plans for different versions that you can find I remember seeing plans in the book "Cost Conscious Cruiser" by Lin and Larry Pardey.

Noticed your Yanmar 2GM20F was a bit slow to start. Curious how many hours are on the engine and if you've lost a bit of compression. Mine generally started pretty quick when cold if given half throttle. Always wondered why they didn't have glow plugs, though.
@SailorJames3 жыл бұрын
Mine only has like 200 hours on it since the rebuild, I haven’t tried using the compression levers when it’s cold and I wonder if that would help, I am plumbing a closeable vent for our diesel heater into the engine bay so when we are in seriously cold climates we can preheat the engine
@keeldragger3 жыл бұрын
@@SailorJames I don't know if this works with the yanmar, but my Volvo Penta 2003T has an interesting cold start procedure. Similar to the yanmar, no glow plugs. Open throttle 1/2 way, pull engine stop plunger up, push it back down, start. 5800+ hrs (never rebuilt) and fires right up. Might be worth trying. Preheating engine bay seems like a good idea.
@bryanbadger68413 жыл бұрын
@@SailorJames yes James, the decompression lever is there for a reason. I had a marinised version of Fordson Major tractor engine, developing 55hp @ 1500 revs which never failed to start, in my Hartley Golden Cowrie, yacht. However most cold mornings I'd engage the decompression lever, and fire it up. Bingo. Remember James, diesel engines have compression, but you're not dealing with that, you're dealing with a tiny part called a starter motor trying to turn it over. The harder that is, the sooner the starter motor burns out. So engage the decompression lever. Easy on the battery too. I'm subbed to SV Fleurian as well. So thanks for alerting me to their channel. Take care and stay safe. Until next time. Atb
@GrampalettasCamp3 жыл бұрын
@@bryanbadger6841 My Yanmar 2GM raw water cooled won’t start below 45F without a hair drier aimed at the intake. Turns over just fine but won’t ignite so I figured decompression levers would not help. Do you think it would?
@bryanbadger68413 жыл бұрын
@@GrampalettasCamp not sure if I can help you mate. Firstly do you have access to internet. Second, if so, go to the trouble shoot section, and see what they advise. Um how old is your particular motor. Mine was 1960s. Still started in all weather conditions. But back to the question. Decompression levers help. I've only ever used marinised versions of tractor engines. (Fordson, John Deere, Caterpillar etc.) But yes I'd recommend, decompression lever (1). Also I had a 3-4 amp solar panel trickle charging the engine battery. Just a thought. Take care mate. Atb.

I do love your channel and your quirky sense of humour, when I can hear it. Obviously you are having audio problems of some sort and much of your dialogue is lost to wind noise, or just generally quiet, which is a great pity. Do you have plans to upgrade your microphone at some point? It would make your vids much more enjoyable.
