Thank you - my father (the highlighted sailor who owned Pelican as his last boat) is still alive in Annapolis, Maryland. In summer of 2022 he flew out (on his own) to the San Juan Islands and sailed with my brother and I on our Cabo Rico cruising boat. Yes at 94 (as of this writing) he is alive and well! Actually, the reason i started shooting these sailing videos years ago was so that in the future, when i am unable to sail, i can look back at these adventures. That others enjoy them is an extra joy for me. Fair winds!

I love this boat. My father and I converted an old Hartley 21 that had been glassed over to have a pilot house. We could sail her from right inside and it was the most spacious 21 foot boat I have ever seen. We spent many weekends on it. She was old and dying though, so we only got a few years service from it, but one day I would love to have a boat like this, the real version of what we were after. Thanks for posting the video.

Is this a boat for crossing an ocean or more of a lakes boat?
@rouslant3 жыл бұрын
Sure you can, but there are cheaper russian roulettes. And, as you will probably not understand my words ... 1) that boat is 10 meters, the longer your boat, the less you have chances to capsize in big waves, 2) that boat has huge windage, the more windage, the worst in a hurricane. Windage is the reason why most sailboats have almost no superstructures. Hardtops are cool for a day boat, but blue water cruisers are usually equiped with biminis that will be removed during storms. The only serious sailboats that are built with hardtops are Amel, and the hardtop comes with a very deep center cockpit, with engine room below, which offers a very good protection at sea, but if you have a look at amel boat you'll see that the windage of their cockpit is rather limited, and most importantly located in the gravity center of the boat. On this boat, the rear position of that huge pilothouse/hardtop would be a huge surface for the wind. If it's 4 square meters, with a wind from behind of 220 kilometers per hour, the force on the boat would be 1.65 tons. Without even talking about the force on the mast... For a boat of 5 tons, all that is way too much.

The way the top of the wheelhouse overhangs the side and overhangs the windshield is a major eyesore and design flaw. Looking at it is to me like hearing fingernails on a blackboard. Ugh. But they build them like that because the unwashed think it looks shippy.
@whiggerhunter42687 жыл бұрын
You Suck Dude, your young and don't understand the meaning of practical, this senior citizen set up his sails alone and trimmed the sails from the wheel house, yes the winch could use some grease, the boat doesn't have ropes hanging all over the place, he's sitting high above the water line in his captains chair and not exposed to the spray of water, the overhang blocks the suns glare, the boats not sleek like a traditional sailboat but there a lot space for 10 people comfortably, the interior is spacious with large windows, this boat would make a great live aboard and coastal cruiser when its time to sail south for the winter. Stop going through life worrying about other peoples opinions. Your Grand Father was probably was one of those "Unwashed".
@nerblebun7 жыл бұрын
Willard Chi: The top overhangs to protect the windshield when it's raining. Obviously you know nothing about sailboat design. Cape Dory makes the sturdiest sailing vessels to be found anywhere in the world. This gentleman has his boat rigged for single handed piloting and slow easy tacks.

to each their own. this boat was perfect as my Dad's last sailboat...from an Ensign in the 60's, to a Bristol 32 in the early 70s, and three others (including a Baba 35 on which he sailed transatlantic twice) you can have your own opinion, but not your own facts. this was a terrific boat for his 80's!

For the love of Jesus, look at some Fisher 30's under sail... this thing is just god awful. Looks like it was lofted by a drunken 8 year old, and laid up by his sister. Oil canned top sides...yuk! Even Alden, who should be a minor god to sailboat folks, laid down awful motorsailors. There seems to be some cult of rottenness among naval american naval architects which prevents them from grocking that a good motorsailor must be both a good motor boat and a capable sailing boat, and should never be ugly or stupid. I think the presumption is that anyone who wants one, wants ugly stupidity. The Norwegans and Swedes and English who had wood fish boats that evolved from sailing fish boats, had an intelligent starting point and tradition, and sometimes manage to build motorsailors which dont appear to be only slightly short of a hot tub with a mast and huge motor.

@@PeterHallett They have made some fine hulls, Peter. This one is well set up for it's owner. I am of a similar age. and appreciate that, and him, sincerely. This boat is very much in the one segment of American motorsailor design, which leans heavily toward a certain motorboat design. Not my cup of tea, but many on Eastcoast have embraced it over last 100 years. So it is solidly in that tradition.
