Love when he talks history of the builders and how companies got started and who the designers are and how they got their start. Be nice if you cav get an interview with an old time boat builder, if they still alive. But the biggest thing I am waiting to see, is when the captain DOESNT like a boat. To date he has loved every boat he has reviewed. Lol.

Cape Dory was my dream boat when I was in my mid to late 20's. Seeing this gem brings back those dreams over 40 years later. Thank you Cpt. Q and Ran Day for this tour. By the way you forgot a point for the nav desk and one for the pillow in the forward berth, so a good solid 32. Take care and have a great weekend.

I have owned a 1981 Cape Dory 33 since 2011 and sold it just two months ago. It was blown off its stands in high winds. A bit of damage occurred and 6000 dollars was the selling price. The one thing that I will add to the conversation is to check to be sure that the stuffing box is accessible. Not only physically accessible, but that it can be maintained. I had such limited space between the stuffing box and transmission coupling that threads on the backing nut were still engaged when the nut was unthreaded against the coupling. Therefore no maintenance possibilities without detaching the shaft/transmission coupling and actually lifting the engine off its mounts. A dripless shaft seal wasn't an option because of these same space constraints. Maybe this was specific to my newer engine installation, but it was disconcerting. Also changing oil filter/checking oil was a workout. It was a great little boat though and quite sturdy. I ran her aground hard more than once 😉.

Great advice about the stuffing box… that seems like an afterthought to make it so difficult to maintain… good to know

I am the happy owner of a CD22 that is a baby version of this 33 footer. What's so nice is that the forward Vee berth on my boat is smaller, but finished almost identically to this 33 footer. I replaced the opaque lexan on the hatch and now I can lie in the berth, see the stars and moon through the top hatch, with the ports letting the breeze cool me down. A great cruising boat from the smallest to the largest.

As the proud owner of a 1974 Cape Dory 25 called Life’s Dory (I’ll see myself out ..), I particularly enjoyed this episode. Cape Dory made lovely boats and made them well. Fun fact - the CD 25 is just small enough to go in a shipping container which is handy if you buy from far away as I did.

Great boat. Too bad I am not ready to stroke a check this season! I think you meant Robinhood Marine (for newer version of 36/40 Cape Dory designs; any others?). Intrepid was the "fin keel" division of Cape Dory, and had some outstanding boats (29, 35 40) by different designers. The McCurdy & Rhodes Intrepid 35 (formerly Canadian Heritage 35) is my favorite - sort of a baby Hinckley 42.

It would be nice if you could show what a serious crack versus minor crazing is so we would know what we’re looking at.I’m glad you showed the chain plates perhaps on your next review you could show the flange seals on a boat I’d be interested in what looks good or what doesn’t look good.

One thing I look for is when the mast goes all the way down to the keel. I feel that is more blue water material in my mind, I have heard horror stories though I'm sure rare of a mast being easier to break off when that is not the case.
@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
pros and sons as we have discussed broken thru deck mast willl alllow a big hole for water to enter the cabin deck stepped mast goes over much cleaner than the stub of the other which may be beating the hull

Question: I know Kraken Yachts is questioning the integrity of earlier so called “Blue Water” boats but I thought the Cape Dory boats were more blue water than coastal cruiser. Sam Holmes just sailed an old Cape Dory 28 across the Atlantic last year.

I would totally love it if you could do a thing on Victura if the library would allow. "I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it is because in addition to the fact that the sea changes and the light changes, and ships change, it is because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it we are going back from whence we came." John F. Kennedy

Not to throw a wet blanket on the party, but, it does have some wet deck issues. I inquired about this boat about six weeks ago and the broker was very honest (a good thing, it would had been discovered anyway). From what I understand, the whole cockpit decking and pats of the top of the cabin are effected. Plus the crazing is is something past a little bit. But that’s always been a Cape Dory thing. I personally think it’s a well taking care of boat, but the wet deck will need to be addressed if your going to do any serious sailing. Wouldn’t be good to have the helm in your lap while out to sea IMHO. If your a DIY’er no big deal, if not, get your checkbook out. There are plenty of KZbins on how to fix it (and drilling hundreds of little holes and forcing epoxy in them is not one of them). Love the channel and look forward to Thursday”s like the rest of you, just being a brother sailer and pointing out the bad. I would have probably been more serious about buying it if it was on the west coast where I’m at. Good luck to all……

@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question: I have never heard of Watkins before to any real extent but when I looked her up and looked at the line drawings I was immediately reminded of the Columbia 34/35 Center Cockpit the bill Tripp Design for the Columbia line. When I read further I discovered that Watkins bought the moles for the Coronado 35 which was the same basic hull mold for the Columbia 34 believe. The interior layout is identical to the Columbia. I was a dealer back in the 70s for Columbia briefly and I thought they did a wonderful job of packing a lot of cruising room into about that length. Though she was high top cited trip manage to bury the cockpit a little bit and kept the deck very flush. I think this Watkins would make a nice family cruiser for coastal work. I have a hard time finding all Columbia‘s to review because I think they have been very popular boats for their owners. Likewise I might surmise your Watkins would provide many hours in days of fun sailing. She is not over canvas but give her 10 kn of wind I think there will be smiles all around. Price is always a driver but that’s a very good layout for a 36 foot boat
@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
Correction. I meant to refer to the Coronado 35 not the Columbia 34 re the layout. But it was the same hull for both snd for the Watkins

Another request. I am getting on in years and have been looking for single/short handed sailers. I have seen a number of open water racers that seem to be OK with a minimalist approach. Look at the Utube channel “Learning by Doing”. I have seen a number of these boats made in the late 80s/90s that were made for the Sydney to Osaka race. These boats are now being used as cruisers. No fancy wooden interiors, ceilings or cabin top linings. When your remaining years are few and most of your mates have shuffled off their mortal coil they seem to have the pleasing features of single handed abilities, low maintenance and easy cleaning. At my age getting there takes on a higher priority. Also could you do a show on preparing your boat for sail. I have lost count of the number of boats being presented for sale that are filthy and poorly maintained, yet ask top dollar. The better presented the more willing I would be to entertain something close to the asking price.
