So enjoyed watching your Fiji adventures, what a beautiful place! We work on the idea of 1000 people picking up a piece of rubbish is easier than 1 person picking up 1000 pieces. So easy to pick up a bottle or bag and chuck it in the bin before it ends up somewhere it shouldn't. Thanks for inspiring us all :)

I have the lucky job of being funding manger for the Waikato River Authority. Over the past 10 years we’ve funded $50million towards improving water quality in the Waikato River Catchment. There is still a long way to go and it will take everyone doing their bit to make a difference. I love watching your videos and love that you include conservation messages within them. If we are to make a dent in the plastic issue we really need the world to create less plastic - lets turn off the tap!

I Have been part of clean up dives in Christchurch. We removed All kinda of things from around the wharf at diamond harbour, scooters, cans, bottles a meat grinder! We are also cruisers and any beach walks are usually accompanied by a bag to clean up what we can, the amount we picked up in Tanna, Vanuatu was insane. It’s hard to find space on the boat for the extra rubbish but worth it!!

Great cleaning up episode. Education of children in the villages and schools. They need to be educated as to how to make money and create products out of the waste. In Lombok , Indonesia there is a lady that picks up all the plastic bottles and crates hanging plants , she has taught the ladies in the village to do the same and sells them. She also teaches them how to make and weave plastic wrapper / foil / cardboard into baskets, wallets, lampshades. It’s education and teaching respect of the environment at a local level that is the key. Getting the creation of waste to earn a living. Well done guys.
@TheCruisingKiwis4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marion. We hear Indonesia have some real problems with rubbish in their waterways. I lack of education being key. Thank you for your comment you're in the draw.

Each time I go down to the marina I root around in the waste and recycle bin and sort what can and can’t be recycled and educate any passers-by as to the difference and why one can’t put all of one’s empty cans and bottles into the recycle bin whilst in a big plastic (non recyclable) bag. And why we need to recycle aluminum cans (=solid electricity) and glass especially. Am working on the plastics. They are so insidious as in everything we do, even bagging the aforementioned recycling.

We have a 5 piece rule. Any time we go to the beaches or rivers and lakes, your not allowed to swim till you have collected 5 pieces of rubbish. Im pleased to report here in the Nelson/Tasman region, it can be difficult for us all to find 5 pieces each sometimes and we have to resort to all sorts of cheating to qualify for a swim. Makes for a funny and fun way to help clean up.

Another awesome episode team! Love those feelings :) One of the cool activities I have done in my years of Scouting is taking 20 Cubs on a night walk along the walkways next to the Waikato River that flows through Cambridge. The walk served a few purposes - night time walking experience for the kids, to see the glow-worms (yes we have glow-worms in the town), and to do community service in picking up rubbish on our walk. All the Cubs were in pairs with a bag between them, at the end of the walk we filled two rubbish bags in the space of an hour. Oh and then to finish off hot chocolate and bikkies!

The dentist scene made me squirm, you’re very brave Rachel not to have the injection. Another great video. Here in the Mediterranean (maybe global) we have ‘Trash Tuesdays’ which is publicised on many sailing Facebook pages. Especially if you’re at anchor, you take time on a Tuesday to collect rubbish from remote or local beaches. You can obviously collect trash at any time but having a particular day makes you focus and make time in your schedule. I don’t know who thought up the initiative but I love it. The easiest way to clean up beaches is not to make any mess in the first place. Especially considering kids stuff which can easily be left behind or dropped by children, making sure all our stuff is 'real' stuff like a real drink bottle, a real lunch box, real nappies makes it valuable enough to double check that we have not lost it or left behind and therefore littering.

Hey guys. Loved Rob's modelling of men reacting to their wives talking about jewelry. Face planting into scrambled eggs shows real commitment to your art! If it had been a bowl of noni, I would have been really impressed. I had a filling a couple of weeks ago without injection. Once I got over the urge to climb out of that chair backwards, I was like, was that it? Good on you for your highlighting the beach litter problem. I used to be in landscape maintenance in Scotland in the 1990s, and litter picking was a big part of the job. I'd hate to think how many bags I filled with dirty nappies and syringes around Edinburgh and Glasgow. I used to get sooooo angry. Especially when people would drop litter on the ground right in front of me! To this day I can't walk past litter lying about.
@TheCruisingKiwis4 жыл бұрын
Rob took his scrambled egg faceplant very seriously. He was up rehearsing from the crack of dawn. He is a slave to his art. Thank you for sharing your story. Dirty nappies are a scourge. How difficult is it to put them in the bin?
@owenpotter24594 жыл бұрын
@@TheCruisingKiwis that's why God invented those litter picker/grabber things. After one of my guys reached into a Bush to pick out some litter and came out with a syringe stuck through his glove, I told the boss we WOULD NOT be picking any more litter until he provided the gear! Much easier on the back too. I could tell from the graceful and very believable way that Rob buried his face in his breakfast that much serious preparation went into it. How the rest of you kept straight faces is beyond me!

Hey sailing kiwis, great video again. The hook in the toe looked a lost worse than the dental work! We burn all of our plastic to keep it out of the oceans..... I am just kidding. We do cut the plastic rings up that are around drinks like Powerade and 6 packs of soda so they don’t get stuck around sea turtles’ necks. Be safe out there!

I too made a positive impact on a beach many years ago when I tried kitesurfing. I managed to "get air" (unintentionally). The impact when I hit the beach was so positive I thought I had broken many bones. When I got my breath back I discovered no broken bones but slunk away to lick my wounds (primarily mental) in private !!

living on a boat means being a steward of my own backyard. I'll avoid purchasing plastic to begin with whenever possible and have banned bottled water on this vessel. Guests are given reusable bottles and access to the water filter. Don't be fooled into thinking stuff gets recycled because you put it into a blue bin, not consuming plastics is a better lace to start. Thanks for making these videos and keeping it real!
@TheCruisingKiwis4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Max, avoiding plastic is the way to go. We try our best but have lots of room for improvement. We like Sweden's idea of controlled burning of their rubbish at high temperatures. This then heats their town water supply which is pumped back in to the town's houses and under the footpaths in town to melt the snow.

The worldwide market for recycling has crashed and there is scarcely any market for household recycling anymore. It’s so much better to reduce the footprint. As just one example, we don’t use bottled water, as filtered tap is just as good.

Yeah it's frustrating the dependence on China top have taken most of the recycling and when their demand decreased it fell over. Gotta be a better way.

Regarding the comp. I'd like to design a net that automatically scoops up floating rubbish and feeds it into a machine that converts it into motive power. Then you could cross oceans while cleaning then up. Also around some parts of Asia, this system would be able to make any boat, tow a five high formation of water skiers if not throttled back ;-)

Where does the trash come from. We have land fills where we live. Where does nz put trash?
@TheCruisingKiwis4 жыл бұрын
The trash comes from too much plastic and non recyclable wrappings and household objects that have out lived their use and have been disposed of incorrectly. It's a worldwide problem. In NZ we have landfill areas, which are a problem of another kind. But it's the trash that never makes it to landfill, makes it to the waterways instead and out to sea that is causing an environmental disaster.

Yet again, another fun video. Rob, it seems you have issues with either teeth or fish hooks or gross food. All are overrated. Anyways, upon my world travels, trash I have found is a cultural issue. Kiwis appreciate take photos, leave only foot prints. Mexicans, (not only Mexicans!!) well pass me another beer and crap, there is no trash can here, so... Unless people have seen the direct consequences, they don't care. So, a couple solutions, educate everyone, make everything biodegradable (not great if your saiing and your yacht and it biodegrades) or increase the cost of plastic, aluminum etc.and offer a cycling reward. We have all picked up trash off the beach, but this is only a short term solution, albeit important. So, I'm going to hang my hat on education. All these sailing videos help, but start this education in schools. The world needs it, well humans need it more than the planet. When the food goes away, it will be too late for humans.
