The contest is long over I know. Still had a beach clean-up to share. I was in Hawaii at Hanauma Bay in Hawaii and I knew the coral was ruined by all the tourists so I had no desire to snorkel there. So, while everyone else was, I took a spare bag from a trash can and combed the beach for trash. After about half the first bag, the police came over, seemingly to arrest me? They said I was not to clean up the beach because it was someone's job... I said, there's trash everywhere, obviously someone isn't doing their job. They eventually agreed and let me pick up trash, but only the one bag! :)

So glad you are making videos again. We really enjoy them! We definitely agree with allowing risk in our lives and allowing kids to take risks. Sometimes we worry that we are being a little too risky with the kids, but in the end, the experiences they are having now will shape them into the adults they will become. When the kids were 7, 5, and 2, we took them on an "advanced, expert" tramp. It took us 10 hours to get to the hut. It was up in the mountains with steep ledges, scree fields....we were nervous, but had to trust the kids. On the way back, we took a different route that took us 11.5 hours with more scree fields and river crossings. We now look back at that tramp as a really defining moment for our family as it made us realize how capable we are. How capable and confident the kids are.

So, you didn't ask for others' opinions, but kudos to y'all for the way you're raising your kids. I do agree with you almost entirely. I would add to your comments at 4:53 that you're allowing kids to develop risk evaluation skills ... to identify possible outcomes of what their about to do and to realistically estimate the probabilities of each outcome, based on experience. My rule of thumb is to allow my kids to experiment, explore, and experience (positive and negative outcomes) ... and only to constrain them when permanent injury may occur. So if what my kid is doing might result in a sprain or maybe a cut, ok ... I point out the risks verbally and let them decide. But if what their doing could result in a crippling back injury or brain damage (from a fall) ... I would probably stop them. Best wishes. (PS - Plz use herbal remedies and homeopathy only as a secondary treatment ... cause ... it's mostly nonsense. ;) )
@TheCruisingKiwis

I'm with you 99% of the way Dave. My gripe is with herbal remedies and homoeopathy. They may indeed be nonsense, however we have had some startling results with them. We have a medical kit filled with antibiotics too. Horses for courses.

Don’t listen to the nay sayers, their kids are probably sitting with their faces buried in cell phone games. They won’t have a clue how to live on their own or make common sense decisions. I’m 65 and can say me and my brother did a lot worse dangerous things than your kids do. We survived and as we moved into adulthood we survived. We didn’t need a safe room. Love watching your family. Hey guys. I’m an older Aussie who can almost remember when we were allowed or encouraged to learn things for ourselves when we were younger. I think the Aussies have lost this a lot and are so controlling now about protecting people from themselves. Fences here, barriers there, signs, etc. But that is one thing (at least 😂) that I do admire about the Kiwis, is you seem to have retained that spirit of adventure and allowing people to experience things and learn, without being too precious about the whole thing. Goodonya

Hi guys! Another amazing video, and a couple of good messages from Rob, summarised well (not often you get to say that). Last time I was on a catamaran was with the Cruising Kiwis, but the time before that we were in the Whitsundays, Australia. Amazing scenery and beaches and wildlife there, but we noticed a lot of rubbish on the beaches. So we dedicated a day to cleaning up two beaches and filled buckets full of bottle tops, plastic bags and even an old pair of glasses frame that Freya adopted (and wore for months afterwards). Also, here in Christchurch I am a volunteer lifeguard and we pick up any rubbish we see lying on the beach. It is so much fun to have the ocean as our backyard, but we really do need to look after it!

Hey guys. Robin here. Rachel’s cousin all the way from Brandon Manitoba Canada. You met my son, Jesse, while he was in Australia. Thank you spending time with him. To put things into perspective, we are 4 hours north of centre of North America. With that said, no huge bodies if water here. Ironically, I have spent 30 years of my life conserving and protecting our wetlands. We have lost over 70% of our wetlands in Canada to industrialization and agriculture but continue to fight the fight. By the way, showed our local Michael Hill staff your visit with Michael Hill and his wife on “The Beast” and they absolutely loved it. Take care.

Oh, forgot my only question: What is propelling the boat as the kids are bow-plowing and diving off the bow and going under the boat. You don't have a prop turning while they're doing that, do you? :O
@TheCruisingKiwis
@TheCruisingKiwis 3 жыл бұрын
I understand your concern. We don't play these games much if we are sailing as it takes much longer to stop the boat, so yes we are motoring and the prop is going when we do. While that may seem crazy, after 6 years we have never had a person mangled by the propellers. The boys are careful where they jump in, the water movement guides you away from the bows, and you would need incredibly long legs to reach the propellers from the side of the boat. If in the unlikely chance that you did managed to go under one of the bows you would hit the keel first, which would spit you out left or right. The greater risk we see is someone jumping in too quickly behind another person and landing on them. That has almost happened.

Chipped for dragging and bowploughing? So some person has seen your videos where the boys are getting unfathomable joy and fantastic life experience, seen how much it adds to their life and yours, and then decided that their own personal risk/benefit analysis should trump yours? May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits. :) I’m sure you invented that sport, and that only mad buggers would try it. But I’m delighted you did, and I revel in the second hand delight I experience watching it. I agree with everything you said and thank you for sharing those joys with us armchair sailors. Nice video the kids look like you're having a blast. You must feel very satisfied as parents. I agree with your parenting philosophy and have practiced it. it is good to give kids as much responsibility as young as you can. my twist on that is to figure out how much value they can add to my life. 🙂 for example as soon as they can use a pencil there's no reason for me to fill out another school form. Of course it is all in the name of responsibility. 😃

You are great parents, with three amazing boys. I whole heartedly agree with Rob, I know I have taken the mick out of him for his miss adventures, but I have come to realize some are engineered as a learning experiance. Even when he as a real mishap, he always puts a positive spin on it. I secretly really admire him, but don't tell him, don't want him to get big headed. Or worse send me a box of Noni out of gratitude.

Don't worry, everyone takes the proverbial with Rob. And there are no engineered stuff ups, it's all for real. In fact many don't make the cut either because we didn't film it or the footage didn't tell the story. Always am adventure!

OKAY, I listened to YOUR rant, and here's mine. I keep hearing praises to this lifestyle of constant travelling and adventure. But there is a VERY dangerous reverse side to it. KZbin is relatively young, families like that are relatively few, and they disappear from view as soon as they stop posting. So we simply don't know what happens after the channel dies. Many years ago a friend of mine married a guy who spent his childhood in a circus. Literally. His parents worked there and he traveled with them A LOT. And her observation was slightly different from the rosy picture Rob painted here. YES, he was AMAZING at making friends. Three minutes with him - and he was your best bud. BUT. He was just as easy to lose them. He is by NO means a bad person, quite the contrary. But he simply didn't care if he lost a friend, a relationship... His life on the road taught him that if that happens, there's always another friend or relationship in the next town. Gain one, lose one, just a caleidoscope of faces. If there are friends, it's good. If there aren't any, oh, well, they'll come soon enough. She spent YEARS trying to work on that and after he recognized the problem they managed to have lived together for 20 years and counting. But it was a HARD road. I wonder what your thoughts are on that? If any. Rob, I dare you to express your ideas in less than 10 pages. 😀 And another question I have. What do you think happens to your kids after this is over? Won't they be too bored by regular life? Do you want them to spend their entire lives like this? Do they want to? SIT DOWN, Ivan, you just don't want to go to school.

Excellent observations. The friendship thing is the biggest issue we face both for us (we miss them) and the boys. It's a big deal but then everything is a compromise. You must surely know that! There are wins and losses in every aspect and choice one makes in life. We try to get old friends join us but it's expensive and I think they think they'll die😉

Well that was good timing. Just starting to get ready for the day, and the Cruising Kiwis cruise onto my screen. It's nice to experience the warmth of Fiji, while shivering in mid winter Hawkes Bay, even if it's through you guys. Yeah, it's called adventure! Honestly, some people would only be happy if you were firmly tied up alongside with your harnesses firmly clipped on! Why do so many people feel they have to finish their comments with "Stay safe!"? Of course you guys are going to get up in the morning and say "Let's go and do something really stupid today and get ourselves maimed. Or better yet, killed!" Not! Rachel falling out of the dinghy onto the wharf in front of lots of bar patrons not withstanding. Well, that's my rant out of the way. Hope Covid isn't messing up your plans too much. Looks like the Whittakers are finally getting underway to Fiji. Fingers crossed for them. Catcha next time. Have fun!

How I kept my waterways clear I once stood on the side of the Persian Gulf. A huge oil tanker was passing by. I could jump into the water, swim over to it, open the valves and let 500,000 barrels of oil spill onto the crystal clear water. But I didn't. I saved so many fishes and crabs. They named a burj in Dubai after me. My address for sending me the rich guy's pendant is in DM.

Maybe I'm looking at life the wrong way, but as parents, oh are held responsible by Heavenly Father for how you bring up your children. I regret that when my daughter was 18 months old, her mother divorced me and thaf was the end of my involvement in parenting her. The way you raise children is entirely up to you and no-one has any right to criticise you!

@@TheCruisingKiwis the truth about my "loss" is that my ex moved from Empangeni (South Africa) to Richards Bay, then Johannesburg then to Calgary Canada. I am free to visit my daughter who has flown out to S.A. a few times. I believe that I am still emotionally close to my daughter although I believe that my ex disapproves of my connection. My biggest regret is that I was - by force of circumstance - unable to have much influence on my daughter's upbringing. That however is part of today's lifestyle - on land!

My dayghterknows how I feel and as far as I know, she is aware of my ex's attitude. The one benefit is that my daughter lds now a naturalised Canadian although she insists she is still South African. To me that speaks volumes especially as her mother considers herself Canadian. My daughter has way more opportunities as a White in Canada the she had in South Africa.

Love thos sentences (not) to tell Rob's age😂😂 Totally agree on that, Rob. Those risks, in such a healthy and awesome environment, are worth taking in order to let them discover who they are, play, help and trust each other. Well done, Rob and Rachel!! You did raise great three kiwi boys. No wonder why you are so proud of them. Also is a great way to learn the risks and responsabilites. So they can help (and save) you with anchores, sails, sharing nigth shifts and recovering dingies and the Javelot 😅😉 About the injuries... poor Finn, having to drink something worse than noni. If I ever go on board, I'll be watchfull so I don't hurt myself... Rachel, your bruise was maybe worse, but also way cooler. Did you try that "medicine"? And, did you got that tattoo? But yes... Declan's bruise was the hardest. Must be soo sad everytime you two separete. 😢❤️‍🩹 That spaghetti explanation was soo deep and sad... Hope becoming once more the EMC and savior helped. And that you two can be together soon, in the Javelot, other sail yatch or wherever you decide. You both deserve it. Safe journeys, good winds and keep taking (moderate or calculated) risks. No pain, no gsin, as you well say. Those who doesn't explore, risk themselves, don't find grest places and joys! (Sorry for the long text! Hope I didn't took much time to enjoy the outdoor paradise).
