Once again we cross the English Cannel at night and this time we are on our way to the Scilly Islands.
We have heard a lot about this islands located just outside Cornwall, but never had the chance to visit them before. They are supposed to be beautiful and are best to visit in calm weather. Then we meet up with some friends.
We might not have the best film quality, but it is authentic.

In busy traffic like you saw in the English Channel I found it helpful to use a 30 minute Course Over Ground projection, to match the 30 minute AIS projection for the big ships. If the tips of these lines met at the same place, …uh oh. After crossing the TSS north of Alderney at night we discovered that our AIS and radio was failing intermittently and mostly not working. The big ships must have been tracking us with radar and MARSA; some turned slightly to miss us. At one point we were on a collision course with a 400+ metre container ship doing 23 knots. Sheesh!

You feel small out there! 30 minutes, we’ll try that next time. We have 1 hr on the plotter inside the doghouse and 10 minutes on the plotter on the steering column. You get a bit nervous when the get too close, but so far we have found most ships very helpful.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful moments with us. For the flickering issue on your screens, it has certainly something to do with the boat electric frequency vs the camera frequency. As an exemple, in America, they use 60Hz electrical frequency and in Europe we use 50Hz. This is the NTSC, PAL and SECAM settings that are made in order to match the current frequency on location. You can tweak this on your camera in order to meet the frequency. This setting is translated by the FPS (Frames er Second) on your camera. - If your boat use 50Hz frequency, try to match a multiple of this frequency in your FPS setting for exemple 25 or 50fps. If you are on an american 60Hz electrical system, then go on 30 or 60fps. This will match the frequency of the screen or the light you are filming and stop the flickering. All the best to you on your Boréal !

Thank you so much for this 😊 We have tried a little bit before, but now we have more information to tackle this. Thanks again!

The speed ferry shown at 1:29 has had some adventure with Top Gear presenters once, if I recall well. They have attempted to cross the sea from England towards France in some modified cars and have failed already inside the harbor. When the ferry has arrived Hammond has just "drove" around in circles after a failed rudder on his water-going VW bus. There have been quite some honking from the ferry's side, understandably :-)

Like someone else posted, this is so different from my home… I live in the southwest desert, for almost 20 years now. I can smell the sea! Watching your vids my imagination goes to places I’ve never seen. Now I want to sail northern latitudes! Thanks for the vids.

There's is _NO_ _WAY_ I could go below with that amount of potential disaster looming out of the dark - the uncertainty would keep me awake even if I did try and sleep. Coffee and cat naps on the bridge 'til landfall - _then_ sleep like the dead!

We have find is that the ships are really helpful and you can just keep an eye on them. Sometimes we call them up and have a chat and that gives you something to do, and of course one of us is always on watch. Thanks for commenting!

You should cross traffic separation zones at right angles, it doesn't look like you are doing that. Hope you are.

Whilst true, it is very unlikely that on a course from Jersey to Scilly that they would meet a TSS. Off Casquests doesn’t go far enough west and the 3 parts of the Isles of Scilly TSS have gaps between them where TSS rules obviously don’t apply AS THEY ARE NOT A TSS. You should check your facts before posting in error on others videos. Hope you do in future.

Yes it's unlikely that they would cross a TSS but they are crossing the shipping lanes inbetwee the convergence zone from Ouessant and Casquets TSS and it is recommended and good practice for sailing vessels to cross at right angles for a number of reasons.@@jasonchamberlin1532

Oh, yes we know that separation zones should be crossed in a right angle, and if we remember correctly there where no separation zone in play when we did this sail.

You have not missed any episode, we just forgot to film it 😀 remember we are amateurs 😂 sometimes we call up ships just to check that they see us and it gives us something to do and it keeps you awake. Thank you.
