The suggestion is to break down the boxes of contents and put them in ziplocks. The dry goods should also be put in ziplock. Can goods should be put into bilges. Some cruisers put canned goods into bilges.

I lived in panama for 16 years, unfortunately you did the right thing. If you speak spanish you might of reduced the shake down or you might of made it worse. It happens to all of us, God bless you all, safe travels.

Taking off into the Pacific, it's about the biggest trip one could undertake. Stressful for sure. We can imagine what any provisions would cost on the Galapagos. I expect Dan will get the 'meat' along the way. Shameful about the extortion. I liked the sloth. Boat looks good, and it looks like you're off! Fair winds. ⛵

It was a lot of food! The kids non stop eat! Luckily that was our only run in! Really bizarre. Spoke to a few locals and they said we should have talked him down from the $150 - like it was totally normal. Hate it for the people who have to deal with it everyday.

I got shaken down driving in Panama, too. Gave him $20 and that was enough. Later found out the trick is to keep a $10 in your passport and hand it over.
