Dropping the hook in 23 feet, mix of chain and rode with light weather, no problems with 5x depth at high tide. Don't rely on the windlass to hold you. Set up a snubber back to the cleats using a rolling hitch on the rode or if just chain use a chain hook or rolling hitch.

Enjoyed the videos, cool that you are chasing the dream. No reason you can’t make it all happen - especially when learning on the Columbia. I had my boat there for a few years - there is no place I have sailed before or since that presents such complicated navigational challenges - wind, current, tide, sandbars, wingdams and other obstacles, shipping and recreational traffic, all crammed into a narrow channel. If you learn to sail, anchor and dock in this environment, you will have solid skills to say the least. Advice? Get some yellow fisherman slickers for $25 at harbor freight and wear lots of layers under. As soon as you can, sail downriver and cross the bar. The freedom of sailing in the open, even if only for a few hours until the next slack tide, will open your eyes to what is possible, and what lies ahead. Fair winds…
@Sailing_With_Phoenix18 күн бұрын
Awesome comment man I really enjoyed reading that one. The Columbia has been a great teacher! Like an old, mean, miserable, teacher that no one likes but when you listen you learn everything. lol Thank you for the encouragement!

Keep an eye out for cheap second hand sailing gear. It is out there. You really don't want to be cold and wet for a sustained period of time. Hypothermia is the obvious problem, but probably even more dangerous than that are the consequences that may result from poor decision making when fatigued. Also look for a harness and rig up a jack line. None of this stuff is particularly popular with KZbinrs for some reason, but they're really popular with ocean racers with countless thousands of miles under the keel. There's a reason for that. Good luck.
@Sailing_With_Phoenix16 күн бұрын
I have the harness and jack lines! And will keep an eye out for wet weather gear. I think I may go with just a poncho. I have warm clothes just need to keep them dry. Thank you for the advice!
@davidbrayshaw352916 күн бұрын
@@Sailing_With_Phoenix It's great to hear that you have a harness. Don't be afraid to use it. Keep the lines short! Making yourself comfortable regardless of what you're doing is one of the most sensible decisions that you can make. Suffering for your art is not what makes a long lived anything.
@Audra-littledipper7 күн бұрын
Just so it's out there, they're racing. Which means they're pushing the boat and themselves. They're taking big risks. When we sailed the Pacific, we had harnesses for foul weather and night watch. There's nothing wrong with safety and precaution. Better safe than sorry and all of that. But, there's also no reason to live in a state of bubble wrap.

KZbin “anchor bridle”. If wind or a big boat comes by and blasts you, you are going to destroy your anchor windlass. You need get your anchor to a cleat so no pressure is on the windlass.. but go you! Your doing it!

@Sailing_With_Phoenix19 күн бұрын
Already purchased haha I also have an autopilot. I’m also leaving the Oregon coast to Hawaii in May.
@goatman382819 күн бұрын
Ask the real sailors in your area as to what rain gear to get. Real sailors. The ones pulling crab pots 7 days a week. They will know what holds up and what doesn't. Also, you have an autopilot. How soon until you do the big push? If you are going to get a wind vane, I would agree the hydro is the way to go. Be sure you have a knowledgeable person inspect all rigging and sails. Get that engine running smooth. I would suggest a haul-out to make sure your bottom side is clean and painted too. It's amazing how technology has made it so even idiots like you and me could even think of sailing off the edge of the world. Not that long ago, really just prior to GPS, a captain had to know charts, reefs, stars, and every inch of his ship before ever getting close to guiding a boat. Now we don't even really have to know how to tie knots! Really enjoy your vids. Raw and real. So many of the bigger channels are nothing but sales brochures for whatever company will send them a t-shirt.

😂😂😂awesome comment dude l enjoyed that one 😂 I'm leaving in May! Honestly I'm just going to bring my north face jacket and yeah haha Hydro is in route. Re: rain gear, you can buy the stuff you see those guys on the side of the road holding signs wear pretty cheap. Keeps you dry and comes in bright colors which might come in handy if you fall in.😂 You can get a pair of bib rain pants and a jacket in Canada for about $150, it's probably even less where you are. I wear them riding my escooter through the winter, I plan to continue to use them when i get a boat.
