Bonjour. Bonne semaine. Amitiés. Olivier.

I know how much the short focal length cameras flatten out the waves. A couple of time you can see the real size. Really nice to have some "on boat" upwind footage showing the interaction with the chop. I have footage of geese from shore sailing upwind in a bad chop and going quickly. But the tail end is a good counter to the concerns that a flat bottom and flat nose boat won't be able to sail upwind against a steep chop.
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
Very true! the cameras can't really show the chop size.

Brilliant! You really got going. I would love to see some info from a boating app if you would do that some time please. A track to show tacking angles, average speed over the ground, max speed achieved. I think that would silence the people who don't like boxy boats. And it would make me happy 😊

The lake speeds on boating apps on taal lake in the Philippines and in the USA. Ian Henehan - 12kn Ian Henehan - 12.9kn Michael Storer - 13.8kn Michael Storer - several measurements over 16kn with one over 18.0kn. Racing had been called off but the rescue boat and start boat were on station. 25+ wind I could barely struggle upwind in the gusts and make a little upwind in the lulls then come screaming back down on big waves in big gusts. Better sailors know that a lot of speed potential is in the boat handling. Never letting the sail luff, sailing as deep as necessary simultaneously picking a path through the waves so you don't stick the nose in. I did on that last day several times. Just kept steering and not even close to capsize. Boat stops and not much water comes over the bow as the bow pushes the water forward in a big cloud of spray.

Great video, Why do people not install Venturi self bailers in boats like this and the Goat Island Skiff? It seems like most production boats have them.
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
My experience with venturi bailers has been that after a while they all stop being watertight. If you use the boat for cruising and sleeping aboard, as I plan to do, then I would have a hard time keeping the bottom dry. This way I just need to grab a sponge and take all the water out.
@gregory17782 ай бұрын
Great video Teo. How deep is this lagoon and produces so small wave? Have you tried it , in 1-2 m waves?
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
Hi, this is the Tagus estuary, it dries at low tide and is mostly 4 to 7ft deep at high tide with some deep channels. It is not that wide so the waves created by wind don't have a long distance to grow bigger. But tbh the worst thing is not the size of the wave but the interval between waves. If the boat has enough time to go up and come down a wave before the next one hits, the wave size shouldn't matter. here in the estuary we get crazy chop with less than 4m intervals, that is the worst case scenario for a flat bottom boat.

Muito legal! Vou fazer umas perguntas em inglês, oq não conheço termos náuticos em Port. It sounds like you are using a ratchet block for the mainsheet, but you were still having to use a lot of effort. Why? Is your ratchet block tension adjustable? Maybe next time, increase tension for higher wind. I'm impressed by how dry the Goose stayed in the chop - on my boat, in those conditions, I'd have a constant spray coming in from the leeward side of the bow, constant bailing. Did you deliberately sit furheraft to keep the bow up, or was that the natural point fr a balanced helm in this wind? I'm assuming you keep a slight weather helm? Bem, qq resposta será bem agradeçido. Obrigado por mais um vídeo excelente!
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
Hi @tomb2826 , no, no effort on the main sheet, I was struggling with my abbs! 😅 The "standard" position to sit when solo sailing the Goose is about 1.2 m from the transom. This can be changed depending on point of sail, sea condition and number of crew. The helm is always balanced regardless, the hull is straight so when the boat heels it stays balanced, doesn't want to point to wind like other boats. I have no weather helm on my Goose, I might make an adjustment to get a tiny bit but at the moment is just neutral at all times!

@@TheBoatRambleralso impressive! Did you lose the PFD vest or is the Goose that much safer?
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
The winds were stronger on that day and it was cold, the pfd helped keeping me warm. And since I had never tried capsizing the GIS in that much wind it was a good idea to wear it...just in case! But usually I don't wear one in the estuary.

Looks and sails great... Quick question... I'm told that the plans for the GIS are very good and could be described as a boat building course. Would you agree and if so, were the Goose plans as detailed? Thanks
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
Hi, the plans for the Goose are just as good as the GIS's, and Michael is always available on the OZ Goose FB group as well as a bunch of the Goose's current and previous owners/builders for any questions you might have! 😉
@jeremygeurtjens75932 ай бұрын
@TheBoatRambler Thanks for that. Another couple of questions if I may... 1) Is the Goose significantly faster to build than the GIS or was the faster build time more a reflection of your improved skills? 2) If you had to build one for sailing in a river mouth where you get some chop (especially when the tide is coming in) which of these two boats would you build? 3)Which would be better suited to coastal cruising in fine weather (if any...although I know the GIS has done the Texas 200)? Thanks for your time.
@TheBoatRambler2 ай бұрын
@@jeremygeurtjens7593 The Goose is much faster and simpler to build. The GIS will outperform the Goose every time, the much bigger sail make it quite a bit faster in low winds too. I sailed the Tagus river in heavy chop and strong currents with the GIS, it handled it without a problem but...if you want to do that kind of sailing please consider building the water tight side tanks and closing the mid seat like I did. It also helps preventing a capsize if you dip the gunwale. It will be very difficult to bail it out in harsh conditions otherwise.
