Sailing in the Marquesas || COUCHSAILORS Sailing Journal #5

Never heard of the Marquesas? Don't worry. Neither had we. But boy were we happy to be there. After 20 days at sea sailing across the Pacific Ocean, we were in need of long showers and ice cold beer.
As responsible grown ups, we took care of official business (like hand washing our laundry) before taking off to explore archeological tiki sites around Hiva Oa.

Hi Tim, thanks for the comment! We stayed for about 2 weeks, long enough to wait for our replacement starter motor to arrive and keep sailing west, not long enough to see the Marquesas and everything it has to offer though!

Ha ha.. your laundry day reminds me of an average day in the Philippines. It's quite an eye opener there. Have you guys thought about cruising there? Or perhaps to the Marshal Islands, or possibly a stop over on the way back at the Galopogos?

I've always wondered what the native people of an area do to combat bug bites. I know I would go bat shit crazy being eaten alive on a daily basis. Another great video.

They burn a lot of coconut husks to smoke them away. They also have a special body oil that has a coconut base that helps, but in all honestly, I think they're just thicker skinned!

There's more bugs in Australia and it's very funny to see soft Europeans with bites all over them. For the most part I think they just overreact to the bites more. Not sure if it's a mental thing or your body just gets used to it.

Good question! And we can totally see why you would ask after seeing this. We do have a shower on the boat, but we have a limited water supply. We need to use a desalinator and to power that we need to charge the batteries by: A. running the engine (burning fuel, ew!) B. running the generator (burning fuel as well, ew!) C. charging with the sun - So, when it's not that sunny, we need to be careful about our water usage. The things that use up the most power on the boat are mainly the fridge, GPS/Autopilot, water maker, lights, iPhone/iPad charging. We need to be able to manage our usage to keep everything running.

We heard it was expensive but we couldn't have imagined paying $14 for a bag of Lay's! Not sure what you mean about the 300ft *head scratch*

You commented on the large yacht in the anchorage. It was no way near 300 feet. Us Navy Destroyers are 300 feet. As to the prices I don't think the people that live there eat Lay's. The sticker shock between Mexico and French Poly has been a subject among cruisers for 30 years and most people lay in 6 months of provisions before going.

You're probably right. Funny enough, we thought about getting a golf range finder so we know how far away we are from a rock or another boat when we anchor. That's how bad we are at guessing distances! Regarding the sticker shock... we didn't have many, or any cruiser friends before we left, we just went off what we read on blogs and watched on youtube! Fortunately, we stocked up pretty well, except on junk, now luxury, food!
