Nothing compares to the void after finishing it. Edit note: the final battle is to show the void of Yang. Yang would've never fought that battle but Reinhard and Julian are not 5D chess players. They're normal humans and just like the many other mishapps due to human error in this story the final battle is just yet another one. I've never spoken to a single person who watched the whole thing that isn't in agreement it is one of the best shows ever. Like not just in anime. Note: ppl who dislike this show probably don't get it isn't set up in traditional anime arcs but rather it follows a story that takes place over 10 novels. In anime terms this is one very long arc hence why the climax is over 80 eps in.
@TinyWaveTV5 ай бұрын
The void of Yang was so real 😓 It was like Julian got TOO hung up on trying to read Reinhard, that he failed to see "the better way(s)" Wenli would've most probably think of... And yeah, one simply can not size this up based on anime standards.

Your singing exactly captures the mood of the last OP, and how it's a perfect ending song for the series as a whole. Golden Wings is kind of the off-child of the LoGH fandom. It's an adaptation from an arc that is manga exclusive so the art style doesn't line up with OVA and the story quality isn't quite the same. As for the Gaiden, I recommend taking quite a bit of a break before starting it! Maybe half a year or so. Let the main story sink in and dissipate a bit. Gaiden pays quite a bit of homage OVA so watching it back to back can lead to a sense of deja vu in not necessarily the best way. Also congrats on finishing the series and wonderful cover of OP4! The Engrish did bother me and I was considering commissioning someone to do it again but this'll do for now!

I understand why a lot of people feel like the final battle was "unnecessary" and a waste of lives, but in the context of the story and the characters involved, I don't think it could have resolved itself as well as it did any other way. I can't recall the exact scenes, but both Reinhard and Julian understand that reinhard's empire was built on top of countless bodies, they fought and earned the society they are building. If democracy wants to stand on the same footing as the kaiser, it needs to prove that it has the will to exist and exert its beliefs without becoming a parasite, like terraism did. Also, all of the people still committed to the Iserlohn cause are volunteers who WANT to fight the empire. If the whole situation was resolved peacefully with talks, there would still be a lot of boiling resentment likely to cause trouble down the road, not to mention being an incredibly unsatisfying ending for the alliance characters. There's more I could say about it but this is already becoming an essay. Not trying to invalidate any opinions, but offering a counterpoint to the idea that there didn't need to be a final showdown between Iserlohn and Reinhard.

I first read the novel when I was 11 (It was hugely influential in the Chinese web novels/sci-fi community in the 90s, which my dad fortunately was in and introduced to me) - I definitely don't think I understood everything at that age, but I recall the emptiness of finishing it too vividly. It is the first time I've ever truly thought about ideology, history, philosophy and politics. LOGH isn't perfect in reflecting the complexity of these heavy topics, but it inspired many (including me) to think about the realities of our world in an arguably more profound (or at least different) manner. Thank you for the amazing review - it definitely inspired me to rewatch this masterpiece. Your thoughtful and funny comments refreshed my childhood memories and allowed me to enjoy the series even more!! PS. Notice how Reinhard and Julian sat on the same side of the table? It could be symbolic of the outcome of the negotiation, but also I read somewhere that the empty space was supposed to be for Yang and Kircheis 😭😭

First of all, thank you for putting the image of Oberstein/Eisenach in my mind lol. I mostly see him shipped either with Ferner (the grey-haired dude working under him) or with Reinhard and Wenli because everyone gets shipped with Reinhard and Wenli haha. Bittenfeld/Oberstein feels like something that would be getting more attention since they're polar opposites and would make a great hateship/enemies to lovers. I mean, this scene you showed was so hot. Now I can't stop thinking about them. And since Oberstein (and Annerose) is most of what I talk about, I want to expound on his finale too. Through his life, he's been a very private person, keeping his feelings and his personal activity away from the eye of history and all the others around him. The two big clues we have going on is the scene back season 1 when he gives Reinhard his motivation, and him getting a dog. Oberstein dies as he lives: doing his own thing that keeps the Empire alive in the shadows where no one can see him do so; overshadowed by the grand world-shaking events happening while so; throwing himself between danger and Reinhard as he's done when the Westerland's devastation came back to threaten him, as he's done as early as season 1 when he was the first to shield Reinhard with his own body at the time of The Tragedy. And his final words I think show just how successfully he's guarded his private life: so opaque it was that his last request required extra clarification because no one knew what he was talking about. He may have lived a fluffy-less life, but he sure achieved what he set out to.

Also they MASSACRED my baby. Poor Iserlohn, even the DNT version looks better than that!

The world of LoGH is one of pure ideology. There isn't really any interethnic competition, and there's no real thought given to any major religion espescially in the FPA, the Terraists are a fringe cult with just enough members to do conspiracies. So those sorts of challenges and the methods of coming to settlements about them aren't really considered when examining either democracy or autocracy. In that way it is a *very* japanese work, mirroring them socially in a lot of ways. And even then it still glosses over the economic and social policy sides of things from the right or the left, except as they relate to the idea of a soldier being "an unemployed man with a gun" in the bits about society breaking down with the skilled technician shortage. It's certainly a good first look, at political concepts, but only an initial opener.
@DIEGhostfish5 ай бұрын
Heck, the closest it comes to covering separatism, localism, or federalism is Iserlohn's brief independence, and at the very end with the Imperial Parliament having some form of plabetary representation structure. It just flows from the assumption that massive multiplanetary states will be the default.

@@002meow Julian had to fight Reinhard in order to gain Reinhard's respect and to show that he and the others were worthy successors to Yang's ideals. In essence, the whole point was to continue the previous conversation Yang and Reinhard had regarding democracy and autocracy, and the only way Reinhard would entertain that conversation is if someone could stand on equal ground with him ideologically in terms of conviction (hence Reinhard demanding that Julian confront him in person on his own two feet). The battle most likely saved more lives than it took in the long run, as presumably, Hildegard implemented Julian's idea of a constitution and the area around Heinessen was left to be governed under democratic rule autonomously.

@@TinyWaveTV There's going to be Falshbacks in the first gaiden to events not actually made in full until the second. Honestly I lean towards chronological for the Gaidens, I did release and got very confused. Also if you're Ani-waving it the whole first gaiden's all out of order and mislabled alread, comments on the first post will explain the order therein. Each Gaiden is more or less chronologicial within itself but there's bits of Gaiden 2 that happen in between (And a book event only animated in Golden Wings the movie, which also includes inaccurate recaps of other events in the gaiden!) Which will be weird because Gaiden 2 is digitally animated like the redraws the dvd inserted into early seasons while Gaiden1 is traditional cel animation like the later seasons.

Maybe my opinion is controversial, but I really not like the ending of the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes, is basically giving an endorsement to the aristocracy even with the "reforms" that Reinhard did, actually not change much the status quo, even that the author want to play both ways and kill all the main characters, and left the future uncertain, because there is no way that the Empire would keep the Free Planets Territory with their economy basically in shambles, they didn't in the past, and they wont now, and to be honest I really didn't like how the anime portrayed Reinhard as this tactical genius when his only strategy is going forward and attack not matter the collateral damage, the only reason why he win the Imperial Civil War is because he was fighting nobles dumber than him.
@TinyWaveTV5 ай бұрын
I think this ending -when it comes to the future of heinessen and the republicans- wasn't supposed to be one that ties all loose ends and leaves no rooms for uncertainties...things were said and promises were made, but much is left to do which is gonna be a whole other story, left untold. And about Reinhard... you got a point 🤔 but gotta be careful, or else Reuenthal's ghost will haunt us for offending his kaiser 😅🤣
@TheKeyser945 ай бұрын
@@TinyWaveTV I really not understand Reuenthal's, he was falsely accused of treason, but instead of doing a rebuttal, he chose to own the treason accusations even that they weren't true, and his only crime was the sleep with the daughter of the prime minister that Reinhard plotted to kill and used Siegfried death as a excuse, and to make things worse, Mettimeyer go to war with his best friend only because his Keiser order it, without even question it, even that they were best friends for years, Reuenthal were one of the few that actually had brains and question the obvious power hunger nature of Reinhard, it more obvious in New Thesis, you should see that, even that end in the middle, before the Empire conquer the Free Planets Alliance, New Thesis not make excuses for Reinhard like the original did, like giving a excuse for him when he let two million people die, for political reasons, this time he do it by his own free will, not because Oberstein no say nothing to him and let the attack happen, and give more agency to the disagreement between him and Siegfried, because Reinhard show that he was no different from the rest of the nobility not matter his "noble goals".

@bloomingblossom52695 ай бұрын
Controversial take indeed but often we forgot that by time of Reinhard's death, it was only 2 years passed since Goldenlowe/Lohengramm dynasty formed and the first thing he did when he became a Kaiser is to fix the economic mess in the Empire. It's also amazing for Reuenthal to be able to keep alliance territories in order and let the capable remaining bureaucrats do their job. Reinhard is a military and administration genius but even for him, it's impossible to fix FPA's economic mismanagement that lasted for over a hundred years in a short period. He also didn't endorse any aristocracy as he didn't give any special authorities to his admirals and even the administration itself was slowly changing into a civil one. As for him ignoring collateral damage; when you're commanding tens of thousands of ships manned by hundreds of millions of people, it's unavoidable but to minimize casualties. He even remarked to Emil that his ways of doing things shouldn't be emulated because he did it because he could but others should refer to someone like Mittermeyer instead. In the case of Reuenthal, it's a bit complicated. You could say he always had this thought of rebelling but managed to keep himself. Him being the governor of Neueland is not only because of his capabilities but also a test of loyalty as now he had enough power to challenge the Kaiser himself; except he didn't. By the time he rebelled for real, it's because the dominos had started to fall. When the news reached his ears, several important admirals had died and even the Kaiser's life was in jeopardy. Even some of the rising admirals like Grilpanzer rebelled against Kaiser. The shortest way to end this was to take the brand of traitor himself, fight the Kaiser for real and die, giving his followers no more reason to rebel.
@TheKeyser945 ай бұрын
@@bloomingblossom5269 You are forgetting that the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes is very apologetic of Reinhard, of course that he would fix a economy that in shambles in two years, when he care more about conquering the Free Planet Alliances when he was Chancellor than actually fixing the economy first, something that Hildegard point out to him when he was doing his reforms, and even that he changed a lot, the status quo stay the same, only now the peasants have more liberties, but the nobles even that now are the lesser now, still have more power, and the two millions casualties were civilians, no military, in a preventable attack, in the original Oberstein overpass Reinhard by not telling him when the attack would happen, in New Thesis, Reinhard do it by his own free will, even knowing the consequences of the attack, that damage his friendship with Siegfried, also I think that Yang was wrong about Siegfried, he wouldn't calm Reinhard ambitions, seeing that his last words were that he conquer all the known universe, Reinhard is a lower noble, but still a noble, sacrificing two millions civilians lives if that benefit him politically.
