Herby gives a lesson on how we get our weather information while out at sea. He does this with no computer, no internet connection, and most of all, no gizmo that you have to buy! He gets our weather information from his "Weather Eye".
Herby tells you how to look at the clouds to see what winds you will be granted based on the shape and formation of the clouds. Clouds are just water vapor floating around in the atmosphere, and the clouds movement will tell you what is going on in the atmosphere (more importantly for you, what is going to happen at the surface) and what winds will be coming your way!
This is all important information when you are sailing because the wind is your fuel. Too much or too little are bad things for a passage-making sailboat. Having the right amount of wind in the right direction is crucial in getting you to your destination in a timely manner. Sure, you could use something like PredictWind with an Iridium connection, but that is expensive and not always accurate. Looking at the sky to read the clouds is free and very accurate because it is the weather that you will be experiencing locally.
Herby and Maddie are making their way offshore around the Iberian Peninsula. They left out of Northern Portugal and are heading to the Algarve on the South coast of Portugal.

Being a cutter, we just drop the headsail and keep the staysail. No one has to go to the stem and deal with hanks. We also prepare well before anything arrives so we don’t get caught in those situations. We had our experience with that and never want to repeat it!

Pizza is always good to fix and enjoy. I bet your glad the Maddie is not into Irish step dancing, but prefers reading instead. I wonder if she ever thought of taking up the violin. Lots of time to practice while your cruising or becalmed.

Be careful of crab pots near where you are. Even that far offshore, I've seen them is water 450m deep and they would've been chains at the bottom, with very strong lines to the surface. Was caught on one, off Cascais, for 2 hours!
@RiggingDoctor

Ouch! Thankfully we didn’t see any (or we didn’t notice any). We did see a float with a line that broke free and was drifting out in the open ocean on our way to the Azores. They are some huge floats on them!! Chesapeake on steroids!!!

Very cool! The Chesapeake is littered with crab pots. We avoided sailing at night because you can’t see them. I don’t know why, but the fishermen seem to like black colored floats. I can’t see them by day!!

How of an issue is the dynema in the cold weather when used for the rigging? are you tightening and loosening throughout the seasons.Jeff
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t adjust it. In the cold, we just keep the sails lower on the mast since it’s all a bit slack. We have it tuned for 80F but it’s good down to 60F. If it’s in the 50sF we just don’t go full sail.

Are there distinguishing characteristics between a Drifter Sail and an Asymmetrical Sail ? Fabric weight, Size, how is goes up and down?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 жыл бұрын
Size and fabric are the same. The cuts are a little different but both work best off the wind and a little just past the beam. The big difference is that an asymmetric is not stayed where a drifter is. All the horror stories of the sail getting out of hand or going under the boat are negated since it is firmly attached to the headstay.

@@RiggingDoctor I have been thinking about getting one or making one. Do you use it often? I think it would be particularly useful for a boat that does nothing but day sailing or weekend trips. I read somewhere that a sculling oar can propel a boat up to sixty feet! I also found two articles on the Ro/Yuloh with is essentially a sculling oar with an angle in the handle. If you are interested in them let me know.
