Range lights! I've used range lights many times during the day. The video doesn't show range lights against the city at night. Yet, you showed a brief image of range lights against the city at night. What did you use to magnify/highlight the range lights over the city lights?

04:10 Crab trap lookout is much like kelp lookout in southern California. Why not mount a wifi camera on the mast looking down in front of the bow, and have a display at the wheel? Should be possible.... theoretically...

Thank you for this explanation, it fits with what I have been doing to get Longitude at night. Longitude easy at night For the Northern hemisphere, longitude for me is easy. If you can measure the Local Hour Angle of a star on the sky to an accuracy of 4 minutes or less you can get a longitude that is one degree or less from the observing position. A slight alteration of the calculation on page 279 of the Nautical Almanac and we have this. Longitude = GST - ( RA + LHA ) or LHA = GST - ( RA + Longitude) Where GST = Greenwich Siderial Time = GHA Aries. RA = the Right Ascension of the selected star. By using Polaris as the pivot point of a star clock and a plumb bob string for a meridian reference I've been getting longitudes to less than one degree easily from a list of 30 stars around Polaris. If measuring the LHA Westward, counter clockwise from the meridian upper branch, this is the angle to be added to the RA of the selected star. If measuring the LHA Eastward, clockwise, subtract LHA from RA. This gives Local Meridian Time, or Local Siderial Time. Then subtract LST from GST to get the GHA of the observing position. LHA can be measured in either time or degrees. This reduces to a minimum the time, math, materials, and paperwork needed to get something of a longitude, even if the observing position is not known. Just thought I would tell the world in case anyone is interested.

I transit the harbor by night all the time, can't see what you're on about. Entering a harbor you don't know is one thing but if you're entering the harbor you're based out of? Crazy to even contemplate waiting until morning. The bay is tricky, Baltimore harbor is not. Just watch the tugs though they usually are as aware of you as you are of them. Very courteous and professional. Cheers.

Welcome home! Beautiful video of Baltimore at night. The bay is famous for its snarky weather and, overall, is difficult to navigate due in large part to crab traps and silting. My father grew up on Gibson Island and had been sailing the bay literally since he was a tot. He later got his Captains license. One thing he never did was claim to "know the bay." Every year we moved the offshore fishing boat from our house at the ocean to either Deale or Baltimore City for the winter, and back to the ocean in the spring. We did that for DECADES. Each trip up and down the bay he studied in advance for any changes, kept keen notes on weather and would go back and study his old notes. He never played around when it came to transiting the bay

You mentioned using an A/C unit. I'm guessing a 5000 btu. Any special way of mounting it? You always have some good ideas. I'm sure I would just jury rig it.
@RiggingDoctor2 күн бұрын
It’s a full mounted 16,000 BTU in the boat. We installed it about 9 years ago when Maddie moved aboard but could only run when plugged into shore power. The generator lets us have that kind of power at anchor. We plug the generator into the shore power cord and everything works as normal.

One glitch in the (correct) definition above-- at the turn of the 20c, you had dinghy-sized cat-yawls, gaff-rigged. The mizzen might be braced against the inside of the transom, and the rudder hung from the transom. So, a hair aft of the mizzen mast. As a Concordia Yawl owner, I can say that one superb value of the mizzen is that it does have a tiny bit of drive: just enough to balance lee helm. So a #3 genoa or a yankee and mizzen can take you most anywhere in any amount of breeze. I use a working jib mostly now for single-handing, and even that sails remarkably well without the main once you get 10 knots or more. Up to 30 knots, no problem. S&S just did a re-make of Stormy Weather, their famous yawl from the 20s. This was a sloop. If I were to order a second draft of the re-do, I'd ask them to make it yawl-rigged again. Just to make short-handed sailing, and being stuck in gale conditions, more agreeable. You'd still get most of the main mast height, to permit proper upwind sailing, and as big a gennaker as you have the stomach for raising.

I was just looking at the charts last week about sailing into Baltimore. I sail around the Potomac most of the time, but lived there for years, and have yet to sail into the inner harbor. It was cool to see it at night, see what's left of the bridge, and hear about the navigation lights. Cool tip about anchoring out storms in the bay too. Thanks for sharing that. Fair winds!

Cool frog, crab traps, part of sharing any waterway. Wish they get painted them bright colors and at night reflective. Getting ready not Baltimore at night, thank goodness for your younger know how! You Got This. Storms, TY for the FYI, windage in these storms, better know before then during its prescience, anchoring if you can makes tons of scenes in the right water depth. TY for your video, can’t wait to boat on this bay⚓️💕😎

Rules are only for breaking after due consideration. I have three that are never for breaking. 1) The sea stays on the outside of the boat. 2) The people stay on the boat whilst underway. 3) At all times be paranoid about fire.

Giant pockets ! Yes, I did the same , but first without knowing I had crossed into the men's side of the department store... I try on these khaki Bermuda shorts with real usable pockets . They fit great so I go out to look in the same area for a top to go with it, and realize it's the menswear department 😂😂😂. WTH , I buy the shorts anyway. It got me thinking , what else .. now I've added men's sport socks to the list. Theirs don't shrink down to doll size after the first washing .😅😅😅

As an aerospace engineer trained in wings, This is a first class explanation of the wind forces on the sailboat. A sailboat is very similar to the several wing options on airplanes. The use of different wing configurations is very much like this discussion of how to use different sail plans. Cutter vs. Solent vs. hybrid. The how to use the different sail plans is the key to understanding why you would pick one over another.

Glad it was helpful! I was actually on a conference call with a boat that is leaving Gibraltar to come this way. I'm their weather guy and another guy who is acting as shore support is a retired Coast Guard pilot. He gave some really good advice that was new to me. I was incredibly grateful to be in that call and listening to his knowledge on how to use simple equipment better so that you can be found on the great blue surface. Those of us who really value learning are never finished.

We stay in the water. The harbor hasn't frozen in a few years and this winter is supposed to be another warm one. When it used to freeze, I simply broke the ice around the hull to keep the boat floating in liquid water.

Aren't spade rudders protected by the keel? Also, how much of an impact can a skeg really withstand? If it so much as bends backwards from an impact, you've basically lost steerage...
