Sailing the High Seas With the Arctic Chef

The Drake Passage, situated between South America's Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, is considered to be one of the most dangerous ship passages in the world. So, we thought it was a good idea to cook a stew on the journey with Vikram Gandhi and the ship's captain, Vincente. Next time you find yourself on The Drake Passage, beware the high seas-but make sure to eat this hearty lentil stew fit for any crew.

Every time I was sea sick and had to walk past the galley, it made me want to puke all the more. The smell of food when you’re sea sick is amplified by 100x of stench. So I ate yogurt all the time. It was smooth when I had to throw up and it didn’t taste bad either.

I find it interesting they cook on the sea at all. I figured it would be far easier to pack in a huge load of ready to eat meals, or bars, etc. Cooking seems out of place here. I agree that fresh food is important, but if astronauts can do it... you can do it.
