Sailing Te Tāiko

Күн бұрын

We’ve been at Vuda Marina for the past couple of days collecting a much-needed care package sent from New Zealand and taking the opportunity to reprovision. As much as we were enjoying our time here, it was time for us to move on and see more of Fiji. Today we would be sailing to a chain of islands, well known for their stunning landscapes and pristine beaches.
The Yasawa Islands consists of approximately 20 volcanic islands which stretch 80 km across Viti Levu’s northwest coast and are best known for where the film Blue Lagoon was filmed. Although these islands are considered remote, the number of resorts on the various islands means accessing them is made possible by flight or ferry but we’d be making our way by sailboat and sail the 30 nautical miles from Vuda Marina to the Yasawa’s southern most island, Waya Island. Our goal was to sail as far north as we could but this would prove to be difficult because the Yasawa Islands are generally very windy and although our trip didn't go as planned, we're still very happy we were able to sail to these stunning remote islands.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’re Adam and Vicki. A nomadic duo who traded land life for a life afloat. Follow us to see what we see and what it's like living a nomadic lifestyle on the big blue. After spending 2.5 years exploring New Zealand's coastline, Tāiko is now a CAT 1 registered boat and we have made our first offshore passage sailing from New Zealand to Fiji where we currently are.
In December 2021 we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. Our plan? We try not to make too many plans but we're currently in Fiji and will see where wind and sea will take us next. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this lifestyle. We release a new video every Sunday.

Really enjoying the journey. So much so, have now gone backwards in time to watch your videos from the start. I find the pathway you have chosen and skills you have developed and honed very inspiring. On watching the back catelogue, I note you moved on fairly quickly from the Nova 28, as im also looking at this class as a starting point I would be very interested in your thoughts on the Nova 28. Thank you in advance.

Hello and thank you so much for following the channel and for your comment here! We would highly recommend a Nova28 as a first keelboat. It’s a well proven design, is sea kindly, not too big to manage (sail area/loading, docking etc) when starting out. The reason we moved on to the next boat so quickly was that we bought the Nova to test if sailing was for us. We confirmed it was and listed the Nova for sale and it was sought out almost immediately as it turns out they are in demand. It sold way quicker than what we expected! And once we had a buyer we went through with the sale. Once we knew sailing was for us our next step was to get an ocean going vessel. If you are thinking of that step then definitely buy a smaller boat first as it takes first hand experience to learn what you want and don’t want in a vessel. It’s a big investment so the early learning helps chose the right vessel ultimately.

Hi guys. Just had a bit of a laugh, at your expense. Sorry. Let's see. You're on saltwater, therefore in a salty environment, and your vessel is predominantly wind powered, equals salt spray. I'm subscribed to a lot of sailing channels, including the Hamils of "Cruising Kiwis" fame. Plus I have 100's of sailing books in my library, including the biggies, "Gypsy Moth " "Lively Lady", Suhaili...Dr David Lewis in catamaran Rehu Moana, dealing with major williwaws on the Beagle Channel, and "Icebird" passage to Antarctica, Rosie Swale, book "Children of Cape Horn" and I could go on. Oh yes, and not forgetting our own kiwi yachtsman, Andrew Fagan in 17ft "Swirly World" voyages to Kermadecs, double crossing of Tasman Sea, down to Auckland and Enderby Islands. As far as my memory goes, not once in these examples, was salt on windows ever mentioned. Please tell me, that you're just messing with us. If that's the case, I've given you a "like." For the entertainment. Bloody brilliant 😂. Thank you for sharing mate. Btw the hut is known as a "bure." Google doesn't know how to pronounce the word. Take care and all the very best.

Thank you for this comment, it really made us laugh! From the videos you have watched, you will see that we are not as sophisticated as the fine people you have mentioned and we don't mind being laughed at our expense 😂. In fact, we recommend following us for more uncovering of the obvious in future episodes. Just joking! Thanks for letting us know that the hut is called a bure. They're pretty cool. We're glad we made you laugh and thank you for also making us laugh! Take care and all the best to you too, Adam & Vicki.

Another great video team. Loving the authentic real life challenges of an adventure like this. Shame about the shoes and the missing footage! Might be worth investing in some wind shields (fluffy things) for your mic to try reduce the wind noise.

Thanks so much for watching and this comment. We appreciate it! After the flipping incident, we had one pair of shoes left each, unfortunately (or fortunately) they were for different purposes. Little known fact about us though is that we are both the same shoe size which comes in very handy at times, such as this occasion. Thanks for the comment about using the mics, it's a very good point. We do have two Rode mics which have the fluffy things on them. The issue is we lost both our everyday Sony camera which we could attach these mics to when we sailed from New Zealand to Fiji (it fell in saltwater that had come in through the scuppers). We do have another camera which can use these mics but we tend not to bring it out now (after losing the Sony) when we're in these sorts of conditions so we rely on the GoPros but they can't use this mics - which is not ideal. We we will continue to work on this. Thanks again for watching. Adam & Vicki
