If you use the tiller pilot on your windvane it will work way better than on the tiller. I take off the board and I made a pin mount to go in place of the vane. Just need to make a bracket to fit your rail to mount the tiller pilot. I have used mine this way for years as I do not have any normal autopilot. The tillerpilot is not working at all at that point. Sam, not sure, but just a suggestion: are you sure that your tiller pilot is getting the full voltage and current it needs? When I first installed mine, even after following the instructions to a tee, I found that it needed to be wired directly to the battery, with its own inline fuse, in order to get its full power needs. Just an idea.

I wonder what makes the difference with these Simrad TP units. I've sailed with mine (TP32) for 10 years, at least thousands of miles with it on, and it just works. I've sewed a canvas cover with pvc window over the buttons for it, to take away 95% of sea spray and rainwater, and to keep it cool under the burning sun, and it is always out even when not engaged. I take it apart every few years to grease it. Meanwhile, I hear people spend 1-2 of these per season.

I always feel sorry for you struggling with that damn tiller pilot thingie. You're not the only one, either... they're like watermakers; creating dependency and routinely failing, as far as I can tell. And as much as I love your videos, the sound of that thing makes me crazy. When I start cruising in my boat, I am going to make a serious study of sheet-to-tiller steering. Apparently, it can be complicated and bothersome with some boats, but from what I've heard from some previous owners of my Tahiti, she will generally steer herself all day with a good set on the sails and the tiller just lashed.... that might be enough, even for (slow, long) ocean crossings. I feel confident that adding a wind vane wouldn't be much better, at least not on my boat. Reminds me of Slocum, who claimed to have spent about 3 hours total at the helm on a 2700-mile run across the south Pacific. Helm lashed, no wind vane, no nothin'. Of course, he also claimed to have spent 30 hours straight at the helm sailing through the Strait of Magellan without autopilot (or engine)... compromises, lol.
@samholmessailingАй бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. There are very few boats that will steer with a tiller just lashed on any course but a close reach. Ive tried sheet to tiller and the windvane was a monumental improvement over that. An electric autopilot is worth the trouble for me to fill in the gaps where the windvane wont work.
@leecowell8165Ай бұрын
@@samholmessailing Maybe out in the big pond but not in the med with such variable winds that you seem to experience. Perhaps on a broad reach where you got some leeway but I expect that would be about it as far as lashing is concerned. I only crewed (when someone was always on the helm(sometimes me)) or sailed a hobie 16 mostly on the hooks for a day sailing blast thus no experience with these steering mechanical contraptions.
