Hey Tony! Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful comment! It's so funny because we argued about that scene for a long time! I (Desiree) thought it was getting too long, and a bit boring, but Jordan really liked it and wasn't willing to budge. +1 for Jordan's good taste again :) Thanks for letting us know what you like and for always being one of the first to comment on our videos :)

Well i am very proud of you guys ! I have watched from the beginning when you did that first patch on the deck. You guys worked hard and you deserve every smile , and great feeling of accomplishment you have now. The reason you don't feel full of adventure and child like is because you guys have been soooo focused on the work, so with all that behind you, gradually the adventure passion will come back faster than you think. Just let go, pull the hook, and fill the sails , a new life is about to unfold. ........Your friend Tom.

Hey Tom! Your comment made us both smile ear to ear! Thank you so much! Now that we're cruising (this video was filmed about 10 months ago), the stress of getting out of the United States and being so worried about having changed for the worse through the refit feels like a distant memory! You were so right! We still have had some very stressful moments, as you'll see in upcoming videos, but neither of us hold that weight of maybe never accomplishing our goal on our shoulders. It's really nice to reflect and be appreciative of our current situation. Thank you for your comment! And thanks for watching from the beginning! Hope to cross paths some day!

Hey Ben!! Thanks for the LOVE! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and the sentiment!! We might actually be heading towards the UK this summer! We decided to wait to cross the Pacific in 2019, so we have a year of sailing to plan out over the next couple of months. We both don't know if we can take another summer in the tropics- so we're looking for other options! Are you a sailor as well? Any suggestions of places to see in the UK and Ireland?

You guys are so cute and fun to watch. I too bought a boat and refitted her. A 1979 Macgregor Venture 25. My first sailboat. It too took me three years total. Although I sailed her last year on day sails. This year she feels complete. I can't wait to sleep on her. You guys have showed me a few great things on your project, rigging fixtures, cushions, etc. Your spirit is great. Keep the fun in it.

I like the part where you are giving advice on someone about to start a project boat and you say "plan on it taking alot longer then you think and don't worry how long it takes". I bought a project boat this past summer and I've basically been telling myself the same thing, but it is nice to hear someone who has completed a project boat echo my thoughts.

I’m just binge watching you guys whilst on lockdown in Scotland. I subscribed ages ago and just haven’t had the time (actually never thought I would!). I have to say that your journey so far had been enthralling - I even watched the whole episode of Jordan making up the rigging fitting.....!! These small insights into the emotional side of the J word are touching and sensitive. The scenes that you shot whilst buying Atticus from the original owner were also classy and I can imagine the fact that he was able to vicariously follow his dreams was a real comfort to him and his family. I very recently lost my wife to cancer so it touched a nerve. I’m not sure if you read comments on your older posts but I hope so.... if not I promise to comment on the more recent ones. Congratulations on some epic videography, it is professional and fresh.

I hope so! Keep safe and thanks again for your sentiments. Perhaps we’ll meet on the seas one day as I am in process of taking the plunge into the cruising world...! Hey Andrew! That's awesome of you to say that! Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed the video! It looks like you follow a bunch of sailing vlogs! We'd love to pick your brain! Thanks for your input!
@andrewleech64686 жыл бұрын
I like to see boat projects especially how you adapt the boat to your needs, see you navigate, passage plan, where you get food and what you eat, checking in to ports, I really hate "click bait shots" and watching a group sitting in a bar drinking, if you are going somewhere give us a bit of background not just shots of the place. I lalways expect to see honest situations

I would love to see more sailors explain the motivation behind them moving their life from land to sea. I know it's not all roses and it is a decision not to be taken lightly. many have given up. How do you prepare for it, if it goes wrong? And prepare yourselves to really see the US from the outside after one or two years abroad. I see those 5 years extending for a very long time. Just started watching your channel. I like it!! Your videos express a lot of emotions and feelings which I like. I just bought my first sail boat ever. Had many a power boats. She needs to be updated. Money wise I am ok, it is the time that becomes an issue. So in an effort to go from non sailor to sailor quickly, Friday I go to the boat at 1 pm, take her out for a sail. Spend the night on her, then do work on the boat from 7 am to 12 pm. Then back to real life work. Then back to the boat work on sunday. That's the plan, but then life gets in the way. :) If you guys are ever in the california region, come visit. I live in San Diego, Ca.

Hey Alan! Welcome to our channel! Thanks for watching our videos and sharing your feedback! Congratulations on buying your first sailboat!!! What kind is she? What did you name it? So cool that you can have a weekend project and passion, all in one! Jordan actually learned how to sail in San Diego while studying film there! He got into racing at a yacht club- have you considered trying to race? He ended up becoming a sailing instructor there too! He said his favorite lesson was with a guy in his 60's with whom he got caught in a squall and started doing kartwheels! His student said it was the best ride of his life, and Jordan was stoked!! We will definitely let you know if we make it back out your way!!

It'sd almost ironic that you've spent your careers on superyachts checking into counties, and now you are apprehensive about sailing to other countries and checking in. I get it that it is so much more important that you do things right when it is your yacht. Makes perfect sense, and we've felt that, too.

Sorry for the radio silence- we ran out of money and wanted to prove to ourselves that we could make money using our new skills while sailing before getting back into editing. So we were busy finding work and doing odd jobs for the last 10 months or so! Question for you- is there anything you think we could be doing better? We're sticking to 1 featured episode per week and a live stream or concept video (how to chose a budget bluewater sailboat for example) as well. Would love your thoughts!

I just found your channel and started binge watching today. Really cool did you know that you can also put videos on Vimeo with a lot less editing. You guys keep up the good work I know you will have a ball.

The moment of decisive introspection seems to come to all cruisers at an early point. The Uma crew sure had that, too. I feel so forturnate to have witnessed you standing on the threshold of beaugtiful joy. Thanks so mucho. Don't go to a Castro speech as a friend did and it lasted from 8 to 8. They were brain damaged...

Just found out about you guys today when I stopped in at Tacos 2 Go in Sarasota (which is an amazing place to eat!). Love the videos. BTW, your dad was extremely bummed that he can't do the Panama Canal with you guys. His new restaurant is getting some momentum so I guess he needs to stay at that helm! We had a great talk about the band my son in law Fabian is in, Boyce Avenue. Looking forward to binging on your videos!

Hey Martnkimm!! That's AWESOME! I saw your post on our facebook post recently as well! Thanks for your excitement!! And thanks for watching our videos! Glad you get to eat Taco's to Go treats- I miss the food!! Jordan and I visited a couple months ago to renew our travel visa in Mexico, so we were there for the launch! My sister and I were sign holders for a couple of days! Lots of fun!

What did you guys do about visas for Cuba? Did you go through all of the appropriate channels for the US government? I have wanted to visit Cuba for a long time, but have been put off by the recent apparent increase in paperwork needed to go there

Hey Willy! Thanks for saying hi! I love your sailing playlist- we really enjoyed Sailing Bubbles! Also Hold Fast was the first sailing doc. that I (Desiree) ever saw. Really cool compilation! Question for you- is there anything you think we could be doing more of or be doing differently in our future videos? Nice to get feedback from people who really know the sailing channel world! Thanks again!

I love the openness of your sailboat. No dodger, no bimini it's just amplifying that feeling of freedom. You may change that in the future but it's amazing to experience it at least for a while. I'm glad you're getting more relaxed. I think cruising definitely makes you more mellow.
@ProjectAtticus6 жыл бұрын
Hey Allen! Ha! Yeah good point! Jordan is actually working on constructing a hard dodger now. Before leaving we weren't sure how to design the dodger (ie mini dodger, hard dodger, canvas dodger, etc) because we didn't really know what our needs would be, and we didn't want to invest a lot of time and $ in a design that was based on speculation. Up to that point, we were just doing small shake down cruises with Atticus. After cruising Cuba and Mexico, however, we realized that our small little shade sail wasn't enough and that the sun and heat really made sailing unbearable at times over the summer! It was fun while it lasted, but we've decided to make it more comfortable going forward!

Man, did your comments hit home about the stress and frustrations of refit to leave. I'm not even married and my girlfriend has threatened to divorce me if we don't leave by this summer. LOL! It has been two hard years. Liked your champagne idea and will get us some. Good luck with your travels.
@ProjectAtticus6 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith! Haha! Yeah I (Desiree) tried to break up with Jordan a couple times during the refit! Jordan convinced me every time to stick around, and I'm glad he did because it has been such an incredibly rewarding experience! I think the best advice I'd give to a couple is to realize that you'll leave when you leave, and it's important to do things that make you happy during the refit otherwise you'll start to reset it. One day, your refit years will just be a memory and a sentence to each other, "can you believe how stressful it was? Can you believe how much we worried?" and you'll laugh, and look out over the water and continue your day :) Hope you guys cast the lines soon!! Let us know when you do!

thanks Simon! this is a question we talk about a lot in our live streams (kzbin.info/aero/PLOdfI7CmkSxguXsixBzcBAq_Fh4nUOP_6) I think we talked about it in last week's live stream in fact if you're looking for our long answer. In short, we learned so much and were able to use those skills to make money later and to have confidence in Atticus and ourselves so we re glad we followed our path. that being said, when we purchase our next fixer upper sailboat in a couple of years we'll know a lot better what to look for and where to devote our time during the refit. it's hard to predict what you will actually NEED out there until you actually cruise for a while. thanks for watching our videos and welcome to the channel!

Your righting moment will be different from the designers curve by placing the dink and engine that high on the deck. Really only a concern in a knockdown around or past 90 deg or a broach. Prob not a major shift if you have a deep keel. Wishing and dreamin at my desk all day I was getting out there. Learned to sail on a 69 Columbia 23. Good fun in a low chop highnwind. Pretty wet though. Narrow boats don't have much buoyancy for righting but isn't much good at 120 deg anyway. Theoretical capsize on the beam is a wave that is 55% as high as your lwl. Stern quarter may be the most probable for broaching or pitchpole. Id talk to old sailors and get their take on drogues and pilot plans based on direction and conditions. Hope to see some safe sailors out there from all tins armchair experience available at our fingertips.
@patch84626 жыл бұрын
You make a valid point, it could increase inverted time. I have been working with a Naval Architect for a design I have chosen to build, after some changes my group wanted I asked those questions- effect on righting moment, inverted effect... Yep so many compromises to face, in the end I chose righting- better safe then doubt. Patch

Hey Justin! I'll (Desiree) have to get Jordan to hop on your comment- he's our tech guy :) Thanks for saying hi!
@justincutts95296 жыл бұрын
Reef sooner, modify your pilot plan, even leave some air in a well secured dink on deck behind mast can be solutions but these all leave pots and hatches more likely to be hit with water. (Actually, the engine will have some contribution and a max buoyancy at90 deg but will loose any contributions to righting as the angle of heel approaches 180 deg.) The smaller and lighter the boat the more effect added wgt on dk has. A solution I like for cruising boats w/o collision bulkheads is a designated tube running from the anchor locker to a box above thekeel for the 100 or so ft of chain. Make sure it wont shift in any direction unless tending to the anchor.
@patch84626 жыл бұрын
I think most of her righting arm is far aft of center. If opportunity were such, I would consider mounting the outboard off the stern where it can easily be managed and perhaps used in an emergency. Waves will land on couch roof, outboard will generate resistance, say from a boarding wave, example- resistance cause by outboard increases angle, assuming it stay fastened on... sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=915 Patch

Patch. I think you are right, maybe near the fwd face of the companionway. Was thinking of shoal draft sloops when commenting about location. It's been awhile since I've worked as a naval architect.

Thinking back to your first episodes, I recall thinking you both were likely heading for a WTF moment. But you both hung in and WOW guys I am excited for you two, it is pleasing to see how you managed the size or scope of the project, meaning your first bite was a big one but you settled in and kept the project a manageable size a certain key to success! Glad I stayed subscribed;) I have a question, today if you were making the purchase what experience would you bring to the purchasing table? All the best Patch
@ProjectAtticus6 жыл бұрын
Hi Patch! Haha! We certainly did have MANY WTF moments! Jordan was really the reason we kept on chugging along! He has an incredible determination when he sets his mind on something! We're glad you stayed subbed too! Thanks for sticking around since the beginning! That's a GREAT question which we could go into for hours! We're actually hosting a Live Stream this Monday "5 Tips for choosing a Budget Bluewater Sailboat". If you'd like to join us, just check out our channel at 6PM Eastern Standard time (or send ATTICUS to 43506 from your phone to receive a text notification every time we go live). To answer your question in short, because we did everything DIY we are completely different people now, so for our next purchasing decision we'll be a LOT more picky. And we'd probably buy a sailboat a little further along on the "ready for cruising" spectrum. Are you in the market for a sailboat?

So if I understand you correctly: There is a strong man behind every good woman.... Can't wait to tell my 5 sisters!:) I thought long and hard about buying used, it might still happen?? But- I've studied for many years, know what I want, so have chosen to build- that was as a tough a decision as any other I've made over my life time! As I am a big project guy, I must have all my toothpicks in a row, all scheduled and budgeted! So in my case scheduling the start and completion time is my standing challenge. In short I am unable to trust in the saying "things will just work out";) Patch
@ProjectAtticus6 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yes you can tell your sisters that! wow! 5! They must have eaten you alive growing up! I bet you understand women pretty well though! Awesome idea to build your boat from scratch! What design? What material? Jordan wants to build our next boat.... eeegh! I told him I need at least 5 years out of the boatyard before we go back in! Good luck and keep us in the loop!
@patch84626 жыл бұрын
Yes it is fair to say they both influenced and helped shape me, I declared perfection on my 50th;) Oh my God what a question “build material” just wait till you attend those tea parties, hmm hmmm. Taking it seriously though and sharing some of what I’ve learnt, also bearing in mind that to build is a seed that takes time to germinate; here’s some thoughts and links. Sticking with mono- there are a couple of very good Naval Architects I admire for one-offs. The first curve is to familiarize yourselves with their design philosophy. I think it to be important that you align! "No"- "more like I believe it essential" because you are about to invest in that experience! Learn to distinguish between their different lines and ask yourself why one accomplishes size for size so differently than the other (s) then put your sailing experience to work and ask how would I enjoy the ride under conditions… B/G Have 2 in my range that I respect, Polar 43 & Cabo Horn 40 which my Sweetheart really likes. For a young couple the Cabo is a very nice roomy set of lines say for a young family! But I see the lines differently, yet I completely appreciate the design and would expect a very sea worthy Lady! Dudley: Has some hot designs, has a philosophy that I easily align with, yet, will be a different ride I know going in. He more than others enjoys the one-off builders (my opinion), easy enough to converse with, knows where you are going and spells it out in plain Cape Horn English lol Check out his DD38/40 and his Dix 43 to name only 2 of a vast proven portfolio! His blog is good reading, I also enjoyed hid books. Patch www.yachtdesign.com.br/ingles/projetos.php www.dixdesign.com/designs.htm
