What a fabulous video Barry. You can feel the difficulty that you are in and the reliance on the elements. Can’t wait to see the next video to see where you end up. It brings up the balance and reality of world sailing. Truly grateful. Thank you. ⛵️
@mmullaley2 жыл бұрын
Hey Barry, love your videos. You need to make time when the going is good...every bit of rag up, get her moving in the direction you need to be going. Being 200 miles away from safety is better than 500. Every day you are in bad weather increases the likelihood of issues. Push her on, use speed to avoid weather. As you know, sailing to windward is work...what's worse is sailing off the wind and taking system after system. Don't get me wrong, don't run into seas you can avoid. Don't worry about the boat...the weakest thing on that boat is you! The boats can take it, we are the weak link. All the best, have at 'er!
@Dan-no4tl2 жыл бұрын
That situation looks all too familiar to me. Most of my offshore cruising has been single-handed and I know what that feels like. Nights seem to last forever when it's cold. It makes me happy to know that you had to make it in safe for this video to be posted. Looking forward to the next chapter.

There are three rules in storm avoidance: 1. Put the wind on the starboard quarter and keep it there. 2. Do not fall asleep. 3. Strictly adhere to rules 1 & 2. Safe sailing Barry!
@ssjpocket2 жыл бұрын
Hi I am curious (and not aware of the english sailing terms), what is the starboard quarter?
@gordonbennet10942 жыл бұрын
@@ssjpocket Starboard is the right hand side of the boat when you're facing the bow. Wind on the starboard beam means wind directly from the right. Wind on the stern means wind coming from behind. Wind on the starboard quarter means wind coming in the middle of these two places.
@Eldering2 жыл бұрын
I guess starboard vs port would depend on whether one is sailing in the southern vs northern hemisphere?
@gordonbennet10942 жыл бұрын
@@Eldering No sir. Starboard is the right hand side of the boat when you're on it, facing forward. It's irrelevant which way the boat is facing.
@Eldering2 жыл бұрын
@@gordonbennet1094 Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant to avoid a weather system on one hemisphere you would prefer one (ie starboard) and on the other hemisphere vice versa (ie port). Since cyclones go in opposite directions on North vs South hemisphere.
