Sailing To The Bahamas! Ep. 24

WE ARE FINALY SAILING TO THE BAHAMAS!
Wow the past month and a half has been an adventure for sure! After driving across the country from Oregon to Florida with our sailboat and having the worst BAD LUCK in the entire world we are SO READY to get to the Bahamas!
We woke up around 3 A.M. this morning and got ready to cross the Gulf Stream. The crossing was very calm and easy sailing and took us around 12 hrs. to get to Alice Town in The Bahamas. We came across several ships heading North and South with out any problems, except for one. The ship was broadcasting AIS which was helpful until we realized his information was totally wrong! We ended up giving way to the ship to let it pass by us and in the process the boom swung across the boat and the main sheet whip-lashed Kenzie in the arm really hard! The force knocked her phone out of her hands and she said it was like slow motion watching it bounce on the side of the boat twice before landing in the cockpit. Her phone almost went for a swim....oops. Now she has a scar across her left arm that will always remind her of our sailing adventure. We are just glad it wasn't worse than that.
We got to Alice Town and got a slip at Browns Marina. The place was really nice and we couldn't get over how crystal clear the water was. Kenzie's first impression of the Bahamas wasn't that great though. She thought it was a creepy place and was worried we would get attacked if we walked around the town, but realized that the people were nice, it was just a creepy run down town.

Ignore all the ridiculous comments. Most people have the same reaction when they experience a different culture. Normal people know it has nothing to do with hate. It even occurs when I have visitors to the US from third world countries. They are just as freaked out. So please people..... stop making everything about hate and just realize we are all humans. You guys are a joy to watch! I love the authenticity and bravo for being brave enough to show insecurities and mistakes. It gives the rest of us newbies hope. :)

I lived in the Bahamas for a year (on Andros Island) and I never felt unsafe on any of the islands, with the sole exception of being in certain areas of Nassau. Bimini is one of the safest places you can ever visit. I have long dreamed of sailing from Florida to the Bahamas. It is a joy to watch your videos and live your trip along with you. Love your little boat, Alice town very safe, keep an eye out in Nassau if you plan on stopping there. Recommend Palm Cay marina on the NE side unless you anchor, a little pricey but a perfect staging area for the lower Exumas.

Did Kenzie learn to sail somewhat and quickly I hope? I was a little nervous when I heard her have a difficult time finding the jib sheet when you asked her to let it out. Needless to say, if you fell overboard, she'd have a rough time turning the boat around and sailing back to pick you up.

We always left Key Biscayne around 9pm and sailed overnight..getting there at first light...the if for some reason you are delayed, you still can make Bimini in daylight.

Welcome to our channel! We went on our sailing adventure to The Bahamas on Turtle back in 2017. Once we got back to the states we started editing our videos and were doing a pretty good job of posting a new video once a week. Eventually life does what it does best and presented us with new opportunities which resulted in us moving to a new place and allowed us both to start new careers. Unfortunately the backside of that means less time for editing and posting videos on a regular basis like we were before. Kenzie is actively working on finishing our Sailing The Bahamas series which she hopes to have done here in the next couple of months. After that we will see what life throws at us next, but we have goals of working hard, saving up money and eventually buying a new boat so we can return to the cruising lifestyle. I was curious as to how much insurance cost for your sailboat, with all your gadgets. Also, who has all the editing skills for your videos ? You both put together some awesome footage. On this episode you are sailing with moderate wind 4 knots. So glad you decided not to motor so much like others do. Its that realism I think people want to see and you have stuck with it. Randall does ALL the cooking! No arguments there. He likes a lot of foods that I don't like. Our monthly Insurance bill for our boat was a reasonable price for us to pay; we went through Geico. When we called to set up the insurance for Turtle, Geico told us they would only cover a certain dollar amount, which was less than what we knew Turtle was worth. (With all the upgrades and what not) We had to explain to them that this boat was similar to what they would consider a "Hot Rod" and that it was worth a lot more, they understood and gave as an agreeable coverage price. All of the editing for our videos and pictures are done by Kenzie. She is self taught and spends a good portion of her time working on videos and managing our social media platforms. Hahahaha thanks! Once we got to Florida we were in new waters and were very unfamiliar with the "culture" of the ICW. It was the complete opposite of what we were used to back in Oregon. We have been sailing for over 5 years and don't normally keep our fenders hanging on the side of the boat. At this point of our journey we had bigger, more important and somewhat stressful things to worry about...like crossing the Gulf Stream for our very first time! Have you gotten used to Black folks yet? Hard to enjoy the islands if you're only used to small town Rocky Mountain demographics. You're safe there than you are in any mid-sized US town. How did the Bahamian's like your shotgun? I thought that was problematic cruising with one.

I am shocked by how many of our viewers have had such a closed mindset about what this video is really about. I’ve already addressed this type of a comment at least 3 times already and I will continue to stand by my previous responses. We have been raised to show respect to other people and their ways of life no matter where they are from. When in a new social setting, we choose to meet the person, not their color. We greet the individual, not their ethnicity. We see them as a human being, a brother or a sister, no different then us. Just because I grew up in a small town in a “Rocky Mountain Demographic” doesn’t mean it will be hard for me to “enjoy islands”. Everyday, people travel to new place all around the world, specifically to see and experience something different than where they are from, and they don’t have a “Hard time" enjoying their new surroundings. I never once said that I don't like to explore new places or see what life is like in other cultures. Why do you think I'm out here? Why do you think people travel? The message presented in this video was showing that this experience was something new for me. It WAS different from what I was used to seeing and being around. I DIDN'T know what to expect or how to prepare myself. I shared this part of MY story, because it was honest and very real that I'm sure other people can relate to. To be able to experience new places in the world is a wonderful privilege, that not everyone gets a chance to do in their life, and sometimes people don't go, because they are afraid of the unknown. As for cruising The Bahamas with firearms aboard your boat, it is perfectly legal as long as you take to proper steps to do so. They will want a full list of each gun (limit of 3) and specific counts of ammunition for each gun. You must be able to securely lock the guns on board and they must remain on board at all times. We took not only a 12 Ga. shot gun, as you probably saw in the video, but also a 357 revolver. We got nothing but pleasant smiles from officials when checking into the Bahamas and never felt any negative vibes. We were very appreciative of the Bahamas for being welcoming to not only us, but also our rights to protect ourselves. The part that could be problematic is coming back into the U.S. with your firearms. There will be paperwork you will need to fill out before you leave the country with your guns, if you want to be able to bring them back in easily.

Saying that you are sorry that dd didn't get it, neatly puts all the blame on dd and none on you. Starting at 11:13 Kenzy really seems like a clueless, culture-centric, "ugly American". If that is not how you want to appear, perhaps you should edit that part.

There’s no blame on anyone. There really is a greater message in this part of our story that a lot of people can relate to. Again, we are sorry if that message isn't understood even after trying to explain it in detail in the comment section of this video. It can be hard to know by reading a comment, vs. listening to a comment how it was meant to come across and sometimes we have to make a judgement call, just as we expect our viewers to do in return. We are willing to stand up for ourselves when needed, but never respond to comments with the intent of trying to stir up contention, but rather connect with and have conversations with our viewers. In this video, I was willing to share my lack of understanding and fear of the unknown. To some people I might come across as "stuck up, selfish, clueless, an ugly American, etc.” and I don’t deny that. You can call it whatever you want. I didn’t edit out those parts on purpose, because I was willing to share with people an honest and real experience of something that WAS different and scary for me. Starting at 11:13 the look on my face was of fear of walking around in a strange place after dark. A fear of getting lost. A fear of getting run over by passing vehicles in narrow streets. A fear of bumping into the wrong person. Those kinds of fears would be the exact same no matter where I am in the world, yes, even in some parts of America. It’s okay to be cautious of your surrounding and it’s natural to want to feel safe. At the same time, the greater message is that its okay to get our of your comfort zone and try new things even if it seems scary and different at first, just as it was for me. If someone were to continue watching the rest of our story they would be able to see that I got over my fears of the unknown and ended up having a good experience while visiting this new place. Dang that's a LONG WAYS on a tiny boat!!! 🤯 Start'n to sound like Robin Graham and Dove. Take lots of video man, it'll be an epic adventure for sure! We felt confident and safe on our tiny boat, island hopping in The Bahamas, but would prefer a larger boat for traveling longer distances.
