Oh, that's a long conversation, better had over a beer. It all depends on what you're looking for. We moved from San Diego to Vermont 14 years ago, then moved to a town outside of Boston, had a place up in New Hampshire for a while, we spend a lot of time in Newport, RI, where I want to put my boat when I get it, and my wife has family all over New England. All this to say I have enough of a fundamental knowledge of New England to offer advice, if you know what you're looking for.

The problem you called out for Ventura is pervasive across most SoCal harbors. Few have free, short-term day slips, if any. Some have guest slips for a fee, but they make it a hassle to come in sans reservation (Oside is like this). The free anchorages are getting more restrictive as well: Island White in Long Beach limits to weekends. Newport Beach and Dana Point limit to either 48 or 72 hours. San Diego anchorage are free but require reservations and some are weekend-only. Burton Chace park in MDR does have a first come, first served 4 hour zone that is free of charge.

It really bothers me. There are so many variables to sailing it’s impossible to really tack down a reservation like that if you’re planning on wind. It forces everything to be a motor fest. I think you would enjoy seeing the Pacific Northwest. You anchor in a new spot every day for 100 years and never see the same thing twice And every little sea side community has transient docks and public docks. Leave a little money for them in the box if you can. If not, no one checks. Some even have power

@@RameyFamily sadly, I think this is a growing trend beyond SoCal. if you are willing to fire up the engine, arrivals are generally predictable in SoCal. I definitely want to cruise PNW one of these days. Mexico and the South Pacific first.

@keeldragger it’s the same in Florida already. They force you to come pay for a mooring ball and blame the black water waste as their cause
