Sailing Vessel Triteia - The Iron Genny - Part IV - Episode 9 - Finally Getting the Yanmar Started!

On this episode of Sailing Vessel Triteia we are finally get everything hooked up enough to try and start the engine. After putting the first diesel in the tank, installing the batteries and priming the engine we finally give it a go!!!

just make sure that when you run the engine for any length of time idle it up to between 1100-1400rpms. like when charging batteries etc. and run it for at least a half hour. nothing will damage a diesel engine faster than just straight idling. and quick starts and stops. congrats on getting her going!!

If you want to replace that valve where the water comes in when you were diving before the check the prop some boot stores sell wooden plugs that look like a cone what you do is you put the wooden comb in there and take a rubber mallet bang it in there and then you could use the pipe wrenches on the inside and then you didn't have to have water squirting all over the place I did that once for the bathroom on a boat just a suggestion Greek channel in the way of showing how to repair different parts of your boat

That knock on the engine drives me crazy! Ive past trough some bad experience with rod bearings and bend rods and they sounded like this.

Yeah diesel engines don't sound like gas engines, It stressed me out at first too. She's a work horse not a race horse :)

when I tried to wire up the alternator to the common to charge the batteries I hooked the wire to a random bolt/nut on the back, right next to that bolt said "batt" molded into the metal case, I was reading it with a mirror so i couldn't see it well,, but it was actually referring to the bolt just on the other side of the word, All the smoked turned out to be was that wire melting as it took a hot and grounded it through the alternator housing, nothing was damaged thankfully but man it freaked me out.

there are these two compression switches on the top that you can flip to help start the engine if its cold, similar to a choke but on a diesel
