Hey guys, I just recently found your site and have thoroughly enjoyed your videos as I lived and sailed in and around the PNW for many years and your videos have brought back many memories... The one thing I would like to suggest as a retired media producer is that you should think about further extending your videos out over multiple videos. For example in this case you said that you didn’t have time to mention multiple activities you did... I would suggest 1 video for 1 weeks worth of travel. I’m sure you have the content to fill it, and I know we would like to see more than what seems like very quick snippets of your travels. Just a thought... keep up the good work!

​@@CruisingMaya I would dictate the length of your weekly video on the story you want to tell for that particular week. Now, you can do a lot of story planning in pre-production, as to where you’re going and what sites are of interest to your story line. I don’t know what length of time you take between shooting and uploading, but I would suggest giving yourself a month or two between so you have time to adjust your story lines. Another idea for you would be to make a long rough cut of everything you shot... I’m talking an hour, or longer. Then go through the story line and make cuts where there seems to be a natural stop/start mark, then you will have rough cuts of your shows for 4, 5, or 6 weeks or longer. After you’ve got your weekly shows stated, then you do your final treatment to them. With your 3 month Canada trip, I thought you could have had 12 - 15 episodes out of that series. So, as far as a dedicated show length... I would stay between 10 - 15 minutes (of prime content) per episode, your intro, logo, and extro would be extra on top and tail. With a 10 - 15 minute cut you will leave yourself in a better position for, and if, you want to add in show advertising. Hope this helps!

I've been hearing that "shorter is better" for videos, but I can't find a way to shorten them and allow for enough time for advertising. Great to hear your thoughts on episode length. @@CruisingMaya the best advice for segment times would be to take a look at the other channels that you feel are the same as yours, look at their run times and the views. It will give you a better idea where you should be. As far as I’m concerned... longer is better for storytelling! Most of the channels I like tend to watch most have run times between 15 - 20 minutes. Just a thought!

I have several times cruised all these portions of the San Juan Islands and more in a twelve foot aluminum rowboat. Perhaps the most interesting part of the experience was being investigated daily by Orcas, curious, I suppose, about the oars dipping in the water.

Steaming crab, will save time and fuel. About 15 minutes steaming. I can’t tell difference. Try it. A coupe of inches water in pot, something to keep crab off bottom of pot. Wait for steam to develope cook and enjoy.

I noticed in your Vancouver island series you had a radar reflector. Sometimes it was up high, sometimes down low. Then I watched the Alaskan series and didn’t see it. Just curious why it was sometimes lower or higher and then why you got rid of it? Thanks for the videos!

Ah yes! You've got a keen eye. If the weather was somewhat foggy, we would travel with the radar reflector hoisted high, but we would often lower it while at anchor because sometimes the radar would doink into the mast would send a sound all through the boat. If we hadn't used the radar reflector in a LONG while, we would stow it away. Thanks for your question and for watching so closely :-)

Wow! I almost feel like I was on this family vacation as I followed you with Navionics for practice. Your video production too has improved so much, great job. I can't wait for your west coast experience down the Oregon coast, as I was wondering how I could safely sail back to Vancouver, BC if I ended up buying a bought in California. This is because I heard the unshielded pacific along the Oregon coast can be scary. This brings me to Maya because a used Alberg 37 has made it to our short list of prospective boats to buy. And since both of you have done so much work improving Maya, do you have a list of things I should look out for? Stay safe.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! Very exciting that you are looking at boats! Now, for the Washington/Oregon/NorCal coast.... I don't want to scare you, but I couldn't imagine going north to BC from California. It was a rough sail and we had wind and seastate from behind the whole time. I know people make the sail north, but I think they have to wait a long time for weather windows and I assume they have their engine going the whole time. Again, people do it, but after making the sail south I would rather sail to Hawaii in order to get back.... people say it's downwind the whole way. As far as things to look at for boats- I would strongly urge you to not buy a project boat. All boats are projects, but i would recommend spending a little more on one that's fixed up. Boat work ALWAYS takes longer than you think and it comes with a cost. If you want to cruise, skip the project boat. Hope this msg helps your cause! We're starting to work on the west coast video now- should be out in a few weeks!
