Great job! Nerve racking for sure. A rag stuffed around the shaft in the tube under the boat will also help keep water at bay too, however that of course requires diving under the boat.

Some people like to grease the threads on their jaw pullers.... going to need to to keep the threads from rusting in a marine environment.

I found myself digging my fingers into my settee, clawing at the upholstery, while the water was coming out of your bellow! I have worked on my bellow recently and the flooding is exhilarating and at times. Terrifying! Congrats on a job well done.

I put a PSS seal in my ketch. The shaft is such a neat fit I have very little ingress of water when working on it in the boat. I’ve had it about six years now. The first bellows lasted less than two years when the bellows lost their ‘spring’. It was replaced free of charge by PSS people. What is good about PSS is that with no ‘lip’ seal there is no wear to the shaft. Where as with packing and lip seals like Tides and Volvo, you eventually damage the shaft needing either to rebuild the shaft, replace it or put an easy-seal collar. the PSS system is much better with a locking collar on the shaft in front of the ss collar. This prevents the ss collar of the PSS moving. And I think it’s a necessity.

Maybe trying to seal the prop shaft from the outside before pulling out the boot would keep so much water from coming into the boat. Using plasticene kids putty on the shaft after you have moved it back as far as needed. And yes wire Does fly off those wheels and eyes are not that replaceable yet. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

Was just watching episode 108 and noticed your predicament with the bathroom. There's another sailing family (Mothership Adrift) and they run into the same problems with calcium buildup in the poo pipe. They were saying its caused by the mixture of urine and sea water being used to flush the toilet (dunnie). They have to continually take the poo pipe out and bang out the calcium deposits. Perhaps flushing with desalinated water might help.

& here am I worrying about doing a similar job whilst the boat is on the hard! I suppose you know straight away that it works or not, whereas I have to wait until we go back in the water at the beginning of April, hoping I did the job properly!! Great channel and very helpful - fair winds

Mate, generally you display a level of industrial experience and skill. This time around, you used a pair of squint safety glasses and guided your son to the same experience using a wire wheel on a drill. Please use eye protection. The cost is low, and the result is something to look forward to.

Good job! I have never had to do this in the water. If you went overboard and placed something around the shaft it may have slowed the water flow into the bilge.

When I worked in a warehouse we would drill a small hole and countersink where grub screws would go. That helped ensure their grip on the shaft.

Honestly a traditional Buck Algonquin stuffing box is the way to go, time tested for a century. Dripless wise the tides marine is nice because you can swap seals without dropping the shaft. You slide additional seals on during install then just cut the old one and slide the new one in place. Fair winds!

Great videos! Just discovered you channel. My fear with a PSS shaft seal is that a failure would likely be catastrophic. My soon to be new (to me) sloop has one, but I am thinking of replacing it with an old fashioned but reliable stuffing box. I know that they can be repacked without much difficulty with the boat in the water. But now I'll explore the unit you have just installed, so at a minimum I'll know I have looked at all options. Have you been happy with it?

I used to run these honda water pumps and I believe they were trash water type and didn't have to have clean water and had about a 7 or 8 foot head, and would pump up 600 feet with large amounts of water. I'd put one on my boat with an exhaust outlet and be set for unexpected water coming in.

Hi, your pss seal looked that it got overheated , so was there no water feed to it
@urbanimage
@urbanimage 9 ай бұрын
These PSS seals on smaller diameter prop shafts don't have a water feed to them. Larger bore ones do. It looked like the mating face on the one he removed hadn't been looked after and /or been contaminated with something or other. Generally, if these leak a little bit, you just need to clean the mating surface with a cloth or some fine wet and dry abrasive sheet to get them back to running drip free.
