Tanks absolutely need to be cleaned but for there to be that much water in your tank, you may want to check that your deck fill cap is not leaking.

Good job Lee, Sara. We know how you were feeling - our engine conked out during the calm a few hours before a full gale was due to arrive, in the Bristol Channel. Eek! Yep, we got whacked. It was an electrical problem; the mechanical diesel interface (MDI) box on our Volvo was instructing the engine to stop. Bewdy. You will want to disassemble and clean those Racor filter housings, for which you will need a set of Imperial sockets. In particular, the four screws holding the bowl onto the housing are 1/4 inch. Neither 6mm or 7mm metric sockets or spanners will work. All the best. Rick and Carolyn. 🙂 p.s. I heard you mention fuel polishing. We had a built-in fuel polisher next to the two diesel tanks. I ran it once a week or so for a couple of hours for each tank, long enough to cycle the whole tank volume through the filter. The fuel remained beautiful and clear.

After a shady start with a dirty filter, you sussed it out, found dolphins and safely made it Mexico. Looks like you still need to fine tune your new/old sailboat. Best of luck to you. stay safe and stay groovy, and mom keep smiling.

When you have that much water and gunk in your diesel tank and you need to have engine run for hours not minutes, try using a full 5 gal diesel jerry can located near the engine with the outflow fuel hose and return line inserted into the can.

That one is my biggest fear. Water a diesel bug in the fuel. This is a good shake up to get twin filters installed and a bypass fuel suction line to draw from an emergency fuel drum. By the way you will save your self a lot of agony if you get a 7mm socket and a square end shaft to drive with you battery drill to do up all of those hose clamps. That way you can use the torque se thing on the drill to adjust the tension on the clamp screws. I have a Ryobi 12 volt smaller drill for that kind of work, and that drill is also my kitchen food mixer for pancakes and the like. I just hold a whisk in the chuck.

In the world of outboards, they say to never use gray hoses. They delaminate inside and clog pumps and carbs. This not your problem today but you might think about replacing them. Those hand pumps can cause vac leaks but think you would see diesel leak. good luck cleaning everything and making a plan for next time. :-)

I had similar problems 23 years ago. I eventually bought what was called a "BaHa Filter" and all fuel coming aboard, irreguardless of the source, was filtered. We had no problems with water or dirt or algae after that. You might try to find a similar filter. Good luck.

Glad you got it sorted. I've never had dirty fuel here in the US, certainly nothing like that. I suspect there were Diesel bugs (bacteria) that grew under the right/wrong conditions within the tank itself. I wonder if there is a small form of water intrusion into the Diesel tanks? Maybe the fill spout on the deck? Cheers from FL.

Well guy's its been a while. And yes I'm still with you every step of the way. Congratulations on all the work you've done so far. This, I feel is the boat that will get you around the world. And I can't wait for you to start that journey. And what I really can't wait for is a drone shot of CO2 with full sails. There is nothing like a Ketch with all her sails up. I no I'll have to wait but that's OK. Much love to all of you.

tee off the fuel line (with 2 valves) and set it up so ...if you have trouble bleeding you can cut in the pump and pressure bleed.. Also it gives you some fuel pressure topower wash the filter (in a pinch).

Did u not have enough hose to pull through to just connect straight to tank? Or were u worried about the hose bend at the tank connection?. If u had smaller hose to inser into fuel line then clamp. Also next time cut open fuel primer bulb completely, u would have found longer barbed piece. Ok take the inspection lid off tank and pump the bloody lot out, it will just keep clogging as fuel in tank is Crap. 😲😲🤣😂🇦🇺 luv yas later

You have sailed into a very beautiful country, but as most things this beautiful also come with an edge of danger, just always stay alert until familiar, Spring Break for the Americans is soon to follow, and certain areas such as Cancun on the opposite coast have been certified as danger areas, as many resort towns will be crawling with drunken tourists. These may present more of a problem than the Mexicans that wish to capitalize on the unwary. Just pay attention and all will be fine, and forgive me for relaying what could be our own propaganda. I hear Mexico is fabulous. (Love).
