You want a plastic drum with a big rubber-sealed lid, put your washing in there with some water and powder whenever you are under way, and the motion of your boat will turn it into a washing machine. I used this technique driving across Africa in the 90s.

A nice combination of adventures and I trust you are enjoying Menorca; it's our favourite of the Ballerics. I kept on eye out for Fair Isle while we were there last week, and saw on AIS that you'd moored in the lee of La Mola; a good spot for ready access to Mahon (assuming one has a dinghy of course..!). The north is certainly more spectacular, but also tends to bear the brunt of the prevailing weather, so your new heavy-duty anchor may see some action. We'll be in Sardinia in September for a late-season charter - Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena Archipelago - and so I'll be watching your travels with a particularly mercenary eye. Fair winds and a following sea..!

Great video and lots of excitement! Isn’t it always the way, you sail up to a lovely cliff and your halyard gives way 🤨 Really enjoyable show, I haven’t been to Port de Soller for 30 years, so that was nice to see again. Your dinghy looks good and light, looking forward to an update on it and your new anchor - it was a bit surprising your old anchor was upturned, glad you checked it out. Enjoy the rest of Menorca ⛵️

Yes I was surprised too! We hadn’t set it very hard as we knew it would drag in the fine sand if we did it straight away, we usually give it a proper pull after an hour of so on that type of sand then it usually sets. But not if it’s upside down! It was nice for me too going to Port de Sóller as I’ve visited there many tome in the last 35 years when my father lived in Mallorca. It was so empty this year it was like going back 25 years,

A very good episode you two and what a beautiful place. Was glad to see that like most cruisers, you run into a myriad of issues, like the broken halyard, the missing dinghy (and having to be inventive with the paddle board), doing laundry, and some great sightseeing. The cliff face you were sailing past when the halyard broke reminded me of some of the cliffs I sail past here in Alaska. I did a trip to a magical fjord called 'Tracy Arm' last year and you can literally get within a few meters of the cliffs in places and still have 200' of water! And I love the Amel boat at the end. They're so well founded and very much sought after by people who know their cruising monohulls.

If anything, your videos keep getting even better! Not only do you have me wanting to revisit a city of my childhood (Cartagena), but the Balearics seem completely charming (although it probably helps that the virus has reduced the size of the summer crowds). Small islands are best seen by boat. My last big sailing adventure was a 2-week charter in the Greek islands.

Yes a boat is always the best way to getaway from the crowds, but as you say there's not too many this year. Greece will be next year for us. I havet sailed there for 35 years, the Ionian was empty then. I think even with coved it will be a very different experience now!

Sailing Fair Isle I understand completely as in mast or even in boom furling historically were known for under certain conditions to result in issues. Personally I still prefer the option to simply be able to drop the main as opposed to furling into the mast etc as it’s less complicated. But yes Amels certainly have a lot of good features, including a lot of good safety systems and are world class boats. Equally though your boat is superb.

I circumnavigated in a clockwise direction around Minorca a few years ago and had the wind on my nose the entire time! It almost seems impossible and if I hadn’t done it I would’ve never believed the story. You were very smart not to have taken the second train to Palma! Too expensive, and on the boring side. I too have an Amel. I basically acquired this boat via a debt collection rather than a thoughtful purchase. I had always thought them rather quirky, but after a few years I realized that Henry Amel was very innovative and almost everything on the vessel is bulletproof. A fine seaworthy craft if ever there was one. I especially like the huge center cockpit and the hard dodger. I’ve done several long voyages and never had water in the cockpit. And the engine access is phenomenal. The one thing I like least about it is maneuverability in reverse. My particular model does not have a bow thruster and it is a challenge doing a typical Med mooring! I enjoy your videos immensely. Please excuse that I am not a patron as I am now on a limited pension and must conserve funds to finance daily sundowners.

@@svfairisle I had the same question. Was trying to figure out how that is done. In the stormy anchorage do you turn on radar in order to keep track of the anchor draggers or are they too close for that and you have to stay and deck and keep an eye on it - which I'm sure you would do anyway. Hopefully not a dumb question from a novice.
@svfairisle4 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. Radar isn't usually much good in close quarters but the Quantum radar we have is actually pretty good, so yes you can see boats moving. Mainly though it's just keeping a close eye on your own anchor alarm and looking ahead to see if anyone is dragging down on you. GPS is a godsend though, you can see as soon as you start to move more than a few meters. In the old days it was really difficult to work it out in the dark, you never knew if it was you moving or someone else!

Excellent so pleased that you have your new dinghy. Are you getting a new motor for it? Why won't you put a frame up on the back of your yacht?
@svfairisle4 жыл бұрын
We still have our electric outboard, it's just the dinghy we lost. I personally don't like davits. That's not to say that if we had a yacht that they fitted well (don't go that well on the back of a canoe sterned boat) I wouldn't have them. But they are not the complete answer as I wouldn't leave the dinghy rattling around on davits off shore. Apart from with a catamaran you just cant strap them in tight enough not to become a potential nuisance or worse in heavy seas.

Pardon my ignorance, but I’ve wanted to ask for some time: what is the dimensions of the “yankee” on the boat? I sailed/sail the Chesapeake and I’ve always heard the main headsail called the jib or genoa. A yankee here is a 100% headsail with a triangle, I guess about 1/8th of the sail area cut out of the lower part of the leech and the aft part of the foot... Thanks
@svfairisle4 жыл бұрын
Yes you have it right. A Yankee is generally a high cut foresail no more than 100% i.e. not extending beyond the mast. It's a very good sail used on a cutter in conjunction with a staysail, giving a similar area to a big Genoa. Then, where it really gains is when you start to reach, the big low cut Genoa lifts at the foot and you have to take the car forward just at the time you should be taking it back & the whole thing ends up looking like an old sack! the Yankee on the other hand has no such problems.

Fab as ever! Enjoy your series so much more than the other 'couple-on-a-boat' series, good though some of them are... May I make one plea? Please try and overcome your very British diffidence about the pronunciation of the place names you visit! I know and love Sóller very much, but it's 'Sohlyair' not 'Solla' in Spanish, and 'Sohzhair' (ish) in Mallorquín! Jus' sayin'. Oh, and you missed a trick not taking the train into Palma...

Yes sorry, it's my fault (Steve) I've been going to Sóller for 35 years & got used to pronouncing it wrongly! in those days us Brits were truly rubbish at foreign pronunciation and we do things like spell Mallorca, Majorca just to make it fit! I have taken the train between Palma and Sóller many times so I know it's a nice trip. Sadly not enough time to do it this year.
