Sailing Fair Isle

Sailing Fair Isle

Күн бұрын

It hadn't been a good start to the season in the Med weather wise up until now, but finally we get some great sailing for a passage from Malta to Sicily and beyond.
We also found what had to be one of the best anchorages in the Med. Dwejra Bay is a stunning, almost completely enclosed sheer-sided cove and we are joined by our friends Jordan and Desiree from Sailing Project Atticus to do some exploring.
We also meet up with old friends and ex colleague Vernan Mann who lives on the island and offers to show us around. We mentioned his excellen and very funny podcast 'Don't shoot my driver' which gives you a flavour of just how mad our old job was working on international news. You can find it here : podcasts.apple...
If you haven't already checked out Sailing Project Atticus (unlikely!) do have a look at their very professional channel : / @projectatticus
I will put out an in depth review on the Swell Pro splash drone SD4 but in the mean time we are getting some nice pictures from it and things look very positive... a drone that won't end up at the bottom of the ocean, Yaaah! Here's a link if you want to find out more : store.swellpro...
And the close up shot was shot on an Insta 360 1 inch version which can produce some stunning pictures, I'll do a little review on that too but here's a link to their page that gets you a free selfie stick in the meantime : www.insta360.c...

Wow! Shout out to "Sailing Project Atticus..., have a look at their very professional channel." Yes, they ARE! One of my favourite channels. And now with their sweet little girl... Another very professional channel is S/V Florence. Matt and Amy improved their game a lot in 7 years. Judy. SCUBA cylinders are filled with air, not oxygen. Standard fill is about 200 bar or 3000 psi pressure. There are different capacities too that are measures in liters or cubic feet. And... learn to free dive. You will love it especially in the Caribbean and South Pacific. Watching more vids...

So good to see Atticus have a good chat with you. Lovely setting and audio is great. They keep grounded whilst steadily developing themselves and the boat, then caring for Issa. PS: I mention the audio especially of conversations as I think great audio of good conversations is so rewarding, the emotion, words, nuances, timings, hesitations, they add a huge depth to video. It's probably only me, lived off R4 then R3, and a family sharing work and travels in diverse countries. I haven't see your videos in quite a while, and the algorithim knew it was time.

It's awesome fun waving at the people who spent tons to go scuba diving whilst snorkelling. Egypt is great for that. All the dives are shallow. Nice to see Gozo and Aticus.

Beautiful video! Nice to see some old places I've visited , having dived there the hole itself isn't 35m but once you go under the arch it's alot deeper down to 35 or so and then 40+ further out around where the old arch used to be (from memory) it basically becomes a wall dive. It's unlikely the divers tanks are actually oxygen tanks as above a PaO2 of about 1.4 (used for safety)-1.8bar (4-8m down, depending on which book you read) oxygen becomes toxic and you can have a siezure (not great underwater). More likely to contain air or nitrox/enriched air with slightly more oxygen and less nitrogen to reduce the amount of nitrogen absorbed and the risk of decompression sickness or to allow you to dive for longer for the same amount of nitrogen being absorbed. Like most med diving it's okay and some fish but not that spectacular really compared with the tropics or even the west coast of the UK & Ireland.

Just got a chance to watch a couple of your reviews, really good job, not completely my taste in boats, but that’s a completely personal thing, cats are all the rage now so they should be really well received. I hope YT recognises them as a quality production and promotes them accordingly ( that doesn’t always happen do don’t get discouraged! ) If I could give you one piece of constructive advice, be really aware of what music you’re adding and how you add it. It’s really easy for music to get in the way and become annoying. To work music must be properly in the background and only come to the foreground in moments. It’s exceptionally difficult to get right but you’ll know when you crack it.

@@svfairisle Thanks so much for taking the time to provide some guidance! I really appreciate it! The music thing was pretty overpowering in the first few videos. I have tapered it now to just the intro and wine and the very end. The main content now is just voice. I am also now reviewing monohulls. I’ve done the Jeanneau 65 &60, the Benneteau 60, the Dufour 61 ( comes out tonight) and I still have the Hylas 57 which I toured with Bill Dixon and his son. I’m also going to do some long range power cats just for fun. I DO love the monohulls. There is something sooooo beautiful about them. Why do you and your wife stick to the monohull, while so many are shifting to cat? I’m dying to know. Thanks again for your kind note!
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Wow, well I’ll certainly watch the Hylas tour with Bill Dixon, impressive one to get. There are certainly advantages to Cats, but I personally don’t like sailing them and the sailing is still important to us. Sometimes the space would be good, just the ability to wander in and out is great. Actually though I’m not a fan of the motion, if an anchorage is really rolly then it’s an advantage but generally I prefer the gentle roll you get on a monohull to the jerky type kicks you get on a cat.

We flew to Sicily in February and checked out a few marinas. Unfortunately the marina near Agrigento, which we loved, wouldn't accommodate our boat. The marina at Palermo was good, but I'm not sure I can make that crossing from North Carolina! Fair winds!

@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
I’ve done that shot a few times before, just jam the bottom of the stick in the edge of the kayak and hold it with your knees. I wouldn’t have been able to do it with the other 360 cameras though as it was pretty dark in there, the 1 inch version did well in the low light.

Great episode. Atticus is another “must see” YT. Ok…I have to ask: the overview of the wind/course portrayed a lovely starboard tack to Sicily. The “champagne sailing” shots were on a port tack with the shore to starboard…editing wizardry?😂 Beautiful work, in any case.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Ah you see on the one hand that’s excellent sailing observation but you missed the narrative. It was a starboard tack all the way over but you missed the line “the NEXT DAY we are heading West” by then we had a Southerly. A+ sailing continuity C- following the narrative!
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Okay maybe a B+ as I did lay the track with that line over the end of the crossing sequence, so as not to crash the music so it was more tricky to catch, but we expect our viewers to pay attention!!!

@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Yes I talk about it a bit in the ‘ choosing a boat for cruising video’ kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZaleH2pm9eKnZI But basically you use the staysail alongside the prime foresail (Yankee) if the wind is forward of the beam, it give you the same sort of sail area as if you had a massive Genoa but you don’t have the hassle of wrestling that oversized sale all the time so it’s a great option for short handed cruising
