Two of the most luckiest people in the world I’m aware of, I wish you both a safe and adventurous journey. A decade or two from now is when you’ll both appreciate the adventure more. You will see what only a handful of what people ever have gotten to see, and accomplished to see, in the history of humanity. I’m reliving my youth vicariously through your videos. I’m hopeful that you’ll be able to put out 100’s and 100’s of videos, I’m hoping for a DVD collection of your dreams, your life on board the La Vagabonde.

Pro-tip, if you're making sauerkraut at home, never close the lid on it, as it produces gas through fermentation, and it'll probably break the vessel its made in! grab a fermentation lid or use a cheesecloth like Elayna! Love your journey, keep up the awesome work Riley and Elayna!

I also remember tying off to those floating docks in Mahon about 15 years ago. My parent's yacht was moored off one of these docks when a tsumani hit Mahon harbour on the night of 21 May 2003 following a huge earthquake in Algeria. Fortunately my parent's yacht survived relatively unscathed, but around 74 other yachts in Mahon were wrecked that night.
@bobshaw40636 жыл бұрын
Glad your parents yacht survived. How awful that 74 other yacht's were destroyed all in one night. Yikes !
@LibyanSoup6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes they were lucky the deep water surrounding those floating 'island' docks further out in the bay saved them. Had they been tided up in the shallows of the marina or quayside they would have been grounded and wrecked. Like me they tend to avoid marinas, preferring the peace and quiet of a sheltered anchorage or in this case these remote floating 'island' docks which were unconnected to the shore. Mahon is actually one of the largest natural harbours in the world, so when the sea level began dropping before the tsumani hit there was quite a lot of water trying to get out of the channel to the open sea. The current this generated ripped a lot the boats from their moorings, including the floating island dock that they were tided off too. The slack in mooring chains and lines (caused by the massive drop in sea level) meant things started bumping into one another and this alerted my parents to the fact that something was wrong. They cast off and spent the rest of the night dodging debris in the darkness in the relative safety of deep water thereby minimising the risks posed by the incoming surge from the tsumani. I have spent 44 years going to sea and that night is definitely in my personal top 5 'worse things happen at sea' moments. Funnily enough the reason I started following SLV a few years ago now was when Riley described being in Cavtat, Croatia and googling how to stop his yacht sinking. It reminded me of my own experience on a stormy night at anchor in Cavtat many many years ago, when another yacht dragged anchor and hit us and caused us to drag too so we made the decision to weigh anchor ourselves and put out to sea for the rest of the night because the anchorage was too crowded and becoming dangerous as the holding was not good and there was too little sea room.

Bob Shaw , Over 2200 humans died in that earthquake, Without counting the casualties and the physical damage caused by the worst quake that hit Algeria, and you worry about some 70 boats getting damaged?
@bobshaw40636 жыл бұрын
That is awful. I had no info about the amount of people who died.
@LibyanSoup6 жыл бұрын
Abe, please go easy on Bob. After all he had just taken the time to read my comment and kindly respond to my shared memories of Mahon on that fateful night. I shared my story about Mahon without mentioning the wider context. I could have, as I know full well what happened in Algeria and the devastation the earthquake caused there and the lives lost. But I chose not to mention it here and kept my comment relevant to sailing and Mahon. In the past I have written online in other forums about what happened in Algeria. At the time it didn't surprise me that this earthquake received very little international press coverage, especially in the west. So I think Bob could and should be forgiven for not knowing what happened in Algeria. I have previously written, elsewhere, about how the lack of news coverage can be linked to the fact that this earthquake happened at night so beaches in the Med were empty and there were no western holiday makers drowned as a result of the tsunami - had it happened during the day, then the story would likely have been different and more widely reported. Sadly it probably took until the Boxing Day tsumani of 2004 for many in the west to learn and in many cases tragically too late, just what it means when the sea level drops suddenly and retreats towards the horizon before rushing back in with such unimaginable violence.

Particularly like this Episode. My wife and I have lived the very similar journey you are now on. We took delivery of a new Catana in 2000. Previous to that we had a Loch Crowther for 16 yrs. Menorca was the first place we sailed to after taking delivery. My gr. gr. grandparents were from Menorca. We were able to visit the basilica there and see the actual handwritten transcripts of their marriage in the 1800's.
