Totally blown away by the explanations over your electric system, and to think what could come up in the future? I was thinking, it's so incredible and could be so incredible, so given that much power, could the new boat fly? Just wow! I hope you'll never need a Dudley Do right helping it to be password protected. So glad Darwin is better he just needed meds and his mom! So glad he's back to normal. Your book looks amazing!

Hi Riley, Jason here, a marine sparky from Newcastle AUS. I have installed a twin 15kw Oceanvolt system on a Shonning Cat here in Oz. Make sure that Derek shows you how to replace components in the Drive (Dc contractor) and sensor on top of the Drive, and you are familiar with the software to reset the drive if you are out of internet service. Just confirm with Derek that if your batteries are flat that you still operate the drive via your genset. On our vessel the genset would only charge into the batteries not drive the Oceanvolt drive. I am concerned that it is only a single drive. All the best, love you guys and the show. Cheers Jason Smith JSE Marine Electrical

My wife and I love you guys and truely care about you. We are day one fans and have not missed a "movie", as Riley would say. We have a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, first year model, and it has sooooo much technology and they have botched it up so bad it is ridiculous. I'm watching all this and just praying it all works! :) And that Riley can fix it out in the middle of the ocean when it breaks! But I'm sure Riley will hit the books and be an expert on all of this electric propulsion very quickly. Safe travels.

When i tell you I cried when you started singing it’s called freefall. This is my all time favourite song, and pulled me out of a really dark hole where I felt suicidal. A few days after I heard this song for the first time, I got the word freefall tattooed on me. This song spoke volumes to me and I’ve forgotten about it while going through a hard time currently. Thank you for reminding me of it again and to freefall. Words can’t explain how much I appreciate both of you, Rileh and elayna, and the boys. There’s a lot of focus on fully electric propulsion in the yachting community but let’s be honest we’re not quite there yet. I’m an engineer working on diesel electric hybrid ships and it’s such an awesome solution, and for your normal use you will have virtually no carbon footprint. Hybrid is safer, and stress free. But you need to focus on tank health, you will be storing your fuel for a long time. Chemical treatment and/or a fuel polishing system(“round filtering” the content of the tanks) might be a good idea.

IDK how much y'all monitor the comments, just wanted to say I'm enjoying how you are balancing the build content with the general life content. I watch a fair bit of technical boat content (builds, repairs, design etc) and it always seems like a challenge for less technical channels to balance their own style when taking on a large technical project. They almost always destroy the narrative of why folks watched them in the first place and just get consumed with the project. A guy who just builds boats and we never see anything but his hands and craft won't leave you wondering, "yeah, but where are the kids this week?" Whatever, I think you're doing it right. Cheers.

Take it easy on each other accidents happen and children can be quicker than we think. You are both incredibly amazing parents to your children. The education they are both getting from this living experience. You both have been told this so many times but I will reiterate it. YOU TWO ROCK !!... The cinematography was top notch.... Wow, dual propulsion systems. The Oceanvolt system looks great. Really nice to have a somewhat in-depth explanation of how it's all going to work for you. Shame you can't get anything back from the constant drag you'll have from the inboard diesel prop, but at least it'll be there if you need it. Wondering what the large hollowed-out area in the transom, beneath the dinghy mounts, is going to be. I know there'll be a rudder there at some point, but is it housed inboard a bit, requiring that hollowed-out space? Really interesting seeing this all coming together. So sorry about the bureaucratic BS you're having to deal with regarding your passport, though. That's pretty stupid. Hope you're able to get a quick fix to that situation and get back to your family.

Ocean Volt tech sounds great. I always appreciate Rileys gear and technical discussions. I see the electric boat with all of its electric propulsion and big heavy battery (200 kilos just for the battery?), still needs a Yanmar diesel w generator, which means all the usual diesel maintenance (fuel, filter, fuel pump etc) $$ and kg mate.

Well, not really. Generator is just way more reliable than engine. Difference is that often generators come in their own closure, so it's very clean and separated from elements. And other part is that they are made to run at their optimal operating speed, there's no extra complexity or stress from varied throttle. And from what I know, ocean volt is always going to recommend DC generator, which is even more reliable, and reduced loss when used to run engines. While yes, generator is an engine, it's quite different from actual engine used for propulsion. DC is further different from AC generator. Other part is that that generator will be automatically operated by computer to strategically charge batteries so that it really only needs to periodically run at it's optimal state, then shut down after battery is topped up. Further optimizing it's use. That said, in their case, they went for actual separate propulsion engine, so it does mean same stuff, but with caveat that they probably won't use it very often, so it won't have as many problems.

Hey guys, your propulsion system seems to be super cool. Especially with the ability to regenerate so much power. But do you guys now have two separate propellers for the Electric and the Diesel engine? If yes, is this a common thing to do or does that bring new problems? @EdwardPallett
@EdwardPallett Жыл бұрын
The diesel engine has a separate propeller (he refers to it as an 'engine', rather than a 'generator'. So yes, it has a separate prop to the electric motor. Check out the screenshot at 21:46. Electric prop is behind the diesel engine prop. Bit of a shame in my eyes. Redundancy, yes, but extra complexity and probably more drag when sailing. If the electric motor is as reliable as he says, a simple generator could provide it with power when necessary instead of dragging an extra prop around all the time that'll hardly ever be used.
@mukkaar
@mukkaar 5 күн бұрын
@@EdwardPallett Yeah, I have same opinion, they should have either gone with full electric, or hybrid engine if they actually want backup diesel engine. Personally I would be totally fine with electric alone just knowing reliability of the technology, but if you are not, there's always hybrid engines. That said, I don't think hybrid engines can regenerate nearly as well as ocean volt.

At about 17 minutes he says that you could run for 20 hours at 4 knots on your battery for a range of 80 Nm. I had similar projections for our boat. Doing the math you have 56 kw of battery. Divided by 20 hours is just under 3 kwh to drive the boat at 4 knots. This is VERY optimistic. I'm guessing your boat will need about 5 kwh to move at 4 knots and at least 7-8 kw to move at 5 knots. 56kw battery divided by 5 kwh means just 9.5 hours or 48 Nm. That will be further limited since you won't want to take your batteries below 20% so realistically and optimistically about 38-40 Nm max battery only range. It's not a big deal though. Like he said, mostly you are sailing with a little motoring power in and out of the harbor etc. We opted for a generator instead of a motor. In those instances where you need to motor for 24 or 48 hours your generator simply needs to be able to produce the amount of power you will need to motor at say 5 knots. If that is say 7 kw then your generator needs to provide that amount of power effortlessly and reliably. Someone might say, "what's the point then? Your just running a motor anyway." It's because you will be able to go, like we do, weeks at a time without running a diesel motor. When you need a little power because your tacking or motor sailing it so easy to just tap the throttle for 30 seconds and its silent and instant. Maintenance is lower, noise is lower, smell is lower, its clean (no grease finding it's way into the boat). It's awesome!

Although I don’t understand a lot about your power system, I am enjoying watching the explanation about how it works. You might be. Teaching this old girl something after all. I love watching Elayna negotiate the streets. Part of the fun of shopping the street shops is bargaining, not sure if that still works, but it can be useful. Darwin was very sick for sure, it made me sad as I was a paediatric nurse and I know how fast the babes can get very sick, but with proper care bounce back. He came out of this very well. Not sure if you know this but all fruit and veggies need to be washed very well, we used a tiny amount of bleach but I know there are new things around by now. This is crazy you couldn’t get home because of a torn passport….but not unusual. We once had to pay someone to hand write our visa in our passport. This was a long time ago but it still makes me chuckle when I see it.

you guys are great. one of the worst feelings I ever experienced was when my first son got sick for the first time. it's one of the worst feelings ever. it’s good that you support each other and he quickly recovered, which allowed you to return to your usual interesting life. building a boat in an unfamiliar country and with two small children is very difficult, but also interesting. this is life. We are watching you and we are sure that everything will work out for you.

how many time do we carry our kids to bed as they are growing. but then one day we realize that they are grown and too big to be carried. but at some point, we carried them to bed for the last time, and we had no idea it was the last time. it was such a non-event that we cant even remember the last time. but if some one had told you this was the last, how important would it have been? Cherish every moment! :)

Pretty interesting breakdown of the new propulsion system. Blending sailing, charging, motoring is going to be interesting, if you need any custom software work done, give us a yell(my old line of work before recent retirement). I would suggest getting a telemetry tap from the power system to a "central boat computer" that can do more advanced processing, i.e. merging weather info, trip planning, energy management, crew activities. Something that could ultimately do AI as well. For example an AI system might be able to suggest putting water bottles in the freezer if you have surplus energy, or suggest course alteration for superior energy harvesting, or to fire up the oven and do some baking... Nice to see the kids well again and Elayna on the guitar, at least you have a cool pad to hang out in until the boat is finished. Must be a bit of a comfort to know you have a *HUGE* friend network to draw on if you need to. Might be fun to snarf up some older used boats and make a small "La Vaga" fleet, and promote Riley to admiral ;-)

I’m confused... Did you end up swapping the electric ocean volt motor for a traditional diesel in the end?

He's got an electrically driven prop, and a Yanmar diesel with a very large alternator/generator on it. So far as I can see, no direct mechanical connection. If his 48V electrical system dies, propulsion is gone too. This boat is designed to cross the Atlantic or even the Pacific with just one weekly video on the water. He means to keep moving when other boats are becalmed, and sail around nasty weather. I hope they've designed that cockpit to reduce wind noise, because there's going to be a lot of wind!

Love that you have a back up to your backups for not only the electrical, but also the ability for someone to remotely return the boat to port in the worst case scenario. Having crew is the first backup as I've seen you and Elayna both out on deck during terrible storms. If Lord forbid you both went overboard, those precious boys would be alone to what? In many ways, being out at sea might as well be out in space and manned space flight has redundancies for critical systems. Take care & God bless.
