Stu, great to see the bottom of Lucky Fish. You may not have been aware that she has hardwood sacrificial strips glued to the outside of the glassed plywood keels (as advised on the Plans), so that the fairly minor damage that was done to this strip was not affecting the structure of your hulls. The idea is that at some point, when this hardwood strip is all chewed up, you plane it off and glue on a new strip. I hope you did not grind back too much of the glass on the keels above the sacrificial strip. Do coat is again with epoxy and if it is thin anywhere add some glass. Do not glass the hardwood strip.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
All makes perfect sense. Those glueline laminations in the keel make a great barrier for the ply hulls. We glassed the hardwood strip :-)

Good to see it survived quite well. I have a similar repair to do to PW when I get back to her. She tapped the ground when being swung into the water by crane last year. She's been out of the water drying in Tunisia for the last 11 months. Should be an easy fix once I get there, I'm still waiting for the travel restrictions to be more favourable.

Another comment about the rudder lashings. The gluing in of them is not to stop water ingress, it is to stop the rudder getting out of line with the sternpost, which will happen under strong weather pressures. I have seen it happen to a number of other Wharram's that have not fixed these lashings. In your case that may not yet have happened as you have a pintle at the top of the rudder, which is not designed to be there as it has a different pivot than the rolling lashings and in fact causes unwanted stresses. I could not see, but is there a pin at the bottom of the rudder as well? The rudder lashings roll when the rudder is turned moving the axis of the rudder sideways. The pintle keeps the axis central, so the two movements fight each other. We fill the holes of the lashings with sikaflex, which is easier to remove that epoxy. However you normally don't need to remove the rudders at all and the lashings last for many, many years.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear that, makes perfect sense. Luckyfish does not have a pintle at the foot of the blade so maybe that is why we dont notice the "conflict" between the pintle (simple axial point) and the gudgeon lashings which are like shoe-laces and roll rather than pivot. The difference in the two movements is very slight??

I'm happy the damage you discovered was minimal and nothing major. I think this will add to your confidence in the structural integrity of the hull. It seems whomever built the boat paid attention to detail and quality of construction.

Hi Stuart, I glad as well to see Lucky Fish in such a relatively good condition. Myself I'm thinking about getting a Wharram Cat as well. After seeing what happened, I will apply a single layer of 2mm stainless steel sheetmetal underneath my keels and rudders. Well, it's not genuine Wharram style, but with such a reinforcement there would probably be only some damage of the copper coat. And touching the ground is something nobody likes to risk, BUT you know Murphies Law......if shit MAY happen it surely WILL happen one day. I wish you and your family all the good luck you need now, and I hope that Coronaia will find an end soon.

Thanks very much Udo and yes to the keel, skeg and rudder caps. Maybe look at a piece of channel or bar and use 5200 or similar adhesive instead of screws. If oyu have to use fastenings use machine screws and screw them into epoxy. Also, Id go for 3mm for a little more stiffness

Hope no rains for the next month. A lucky day for lucky fish once again. With a descent breeze, you could be back in the water in 3 weeks. Feel bad for the other traveler. You would think they would have some compassion for emergencies. Loss of an engine is critical. And they did make the right choice to return. Especially with all the issues right now in the Gulf of Mexico. Not a good time to complete a trip on sail alone.

@@SailingLuckyfish It has earned a new name here. We call it a 'Plandemic'. Because it's following an obscure pattern. Seems like the weaker it gets, the more restrictions are enforced. Leaves many scratching their heads as to why or consideration of a few city council members need to visit the back side of a wood shed for reeducation. LOL. Firstly, there's a little sick irony that the first of the co-owners to damage the boat is me and, it happened at the moment we all formed the syndicate. So this is a bit of a special circumstance. Normally we'd make an insurance claim, pay the deductible /excess and get it fixed. In this case that didnt seem right so I covered the costs of haulout and repair.

Why don't these boats have a metal rubbing strake along the bottom? That way a minor grounding would not effect the structure of the boat only the sacrificial strake.
@hannekeboon17434 жыл бұрын
The keels of Lucky Fish have in fact a hardwood sacrificial strip glued on the bottom of the keel on the outside of the hull glassing. Stu need not have worried about the damage to that hardwood as the water cannot get into the plywood keel. A hardwood strip is probably better than a steel strip as that will need to be screwed into the plywood keel and that creates entry holes for water.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
@Hanneke Boon - this is great to know. I was aware of the design as I checked the drawings but you know... this is one of the great disadvantages of not having built the boat myself. I cannot be sure of exactly how things were done. Fortunately the Wharram designs are so easy to inspect, there are very few areas hidden places behind linings and mouldings and so on, and, Dan did do a great job following the plans where it matters most. Thanks very much for explaining things clearer than anybody could! Stew
