Hi Stew and Zaya! It's so great that you're posting again. The footage, I take it is (understandably) from a few months ago, before Ariun had to leave, but was very pleasantly surprised that she was able to spend the amount of time with you before hand, that you are able to share with us. She's an absolute gem of a person. As I've said before, your videos are tonic, especially in times like these. You're probably aware that we're going through pretty dark times here in the United States; the resumption of your releases came at just the right time. All of you, and your wonderful boat, along with the beautiful places that you visit (even with the mishaps) bring a smile to my face and much needed balm to my spirits. Thank you again!

Thanks Terry. And you're right of course, Ariun is a gem, a rare gem at that. Thanks for your kind words of support which encourage us to go on making and sharing the vids. Sending you our warm wishes in these troubled times.

"Belize is a really challenging place to sail". You said it Stew. Bob Beggs would certainly agree. Bob is famous for racing a Tiki 26 across the Atlantic single-handed in '92 but his 1st Tiki 26 crossing, a couple of years earlier, foundered on a reef off Belize...
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly little publicity out there for Bob's accomplishments. Googling shows the guy has really been around!
@helmshardover4 жыл бұрын
@@SailingLuckyfish I was running a Wharram Forum, but of course Google didn't exist when the then young Bob made his first "public appearance" in the Single-handed Race. No video publishing on-line either, but we did equip Bob with a Hi8 video camera, which he was taught how to operate as I towed him to the start line with an Oro! Perhaps I should publish some now if people were interested, though it's pretty low-res compared to today's video!

Always zoom in. Where do you plan on spending the hurricane season? Rio Dulce?
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
great question! yes Rio Dulce but we must wait for borders to re-open. History tells us that hurricanes tend to hit Belize and the Yucatan in late August and September. We are hoping we have until then if needed!!!

Aye m8’s, this is so hard for me… not being onboard Luckyfish and no hands to give you in a situation like that. Your drone mastering are improving. Ariun snorkling was a nice mix of drone and UV shots brought together in smooth narration. Two more people aboard and able for camera handling, makes a good addition all over.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Aye MiQ. Its a very different dynamic on board for sure. I think it makes for more interesting videos, seeing the different viewpoints.
@MiQBohlin4 жыл бұрын
Not only the viewpoints, mate, I reckon the whole storytelling becomes more dynamic. Absolutely not that it shouldn't be enough with 2-3 people, but with more crew there is undoubtedly more actions and just by having camera pointed at one of them tells the same story in a different way (if you remember my tedious jabber about dramaturgy) 😉 or have a look at Delos and make the same analyzes from their last 6 months. [I'm off for editing a two hour video, to be delivered in a few days. But had to watch your latest first…]

Lovely stuff guys well done. Very pleased to hear dings are only on the sacrificial keel. Very interesting stuff ref the chartplotter magnification Skipper! I think I'm going to remember that one! Welcome to the ocean Ariun...makings of a fab freediver there. Freediving is a subject worthy of study as well as practice ma'am. The more you know the safer and more effective you'll be. Suggest at least being aware of and how to avoid shallow water blackout and how to handle ocean conditions such as rip currents etc. Best wishes everyone.

I would test the GPS readings with a lead line and see if they say it's 10 meters then is it 10 meters? They have points of reference that change. Your life is that hull. Then there are moon cycle tides, extra high or low. Neep might not be deep. Who is keeping records of channel changes with sandy bottom, harbors run out of funds to dredge with. How about a long bamboo pole with some weight on it for buoyancy. Putting the girls to work to keep them from getting bored. Living the dream........

hello, luckyfish are there anymore plans to cross pacific?
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Yes, we are discussing with the other co-owners. I think we are unanimous in taking Luckyfish east again, across the Carib to Panama and then the Sth Pacific beckons!
@TimsBitsnPieces4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure as to why you moored so close to a reef in the first place.. stay clear of those things they bite the hull!!. It seems that you need to check and maybe calibrate the plotter with the depths that it is showing you. Yes, you need to zoom in often in unknown waters or have multiple screens showing you the relative information. Dolphins often travel alongside a boat's bow as its traveling along.

Love the reference to Team Vestas re GPS chart zoom, bet you're glad you didn't do it at their speed & in the middle of the night. Just found you guys online, something has pinged on the YT-algorithm, so keep posting (you came up on my suggested videos out of nowhere....) Binge watched a few of your vids (mainly because of your beautiful Wharram) and then subscribed 'cos your content is great!. Going back to Zaya saying in your "10 things you don't know about us", Zaya, do it... when you can (covid be damned and Leo timing allowed) become a 'master'. It's a fun learning experience and has a wealth of advantages ( not to mention it will feed your 'coursefreakness' beautifully). So from Auckland, be safe, be happy, fair winds.

I like your cat style dinghy. What do you like about that style vs. a conventional inflatable, i.e. zodiac?
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
The dinghy is a Takacat. We love the design as it fixes some of the issues with inflatables. Especially since it's lightweight, really stable and has a semi rigid, high-pressure floor. The open transom is great as it never fills up with rain and sink! It has thick rubber skid shoes on the two hulls to prevent punctures on coral etc. The landing barge front is good for swimming and snorkeling. That makes it easy to get yourself out of the water. Coming into our stern ramp its good for passing bags and shopping etc. We tow it when anchor hopping, but stow it on deck or in bags for longer trips or if it's blowing. We have a 5HP two stroke and it will fairly fly along on the plane with just me in it. Their 2020 models are better as they have welded, not glued, seams. We are not agents for Takacat but they sent ours to Sth Africa no dramas and seem to have agents all over. What sort of mothership do you have? Cheers Stew

Thanks for all the great detailed information! We have a 31’ Sea Ray Sundancer with an Olson Manufacturing First Class davit on the back to pull the dinghy up and down.

Digital charts have issues. It's too easy to be lazy as well and just totally rely on them. Still, it could have been worse. At least you got off again ok.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is no substitute for a look out on the bow. Unfortunately we got lax and paid the price. There are no reliable digital or paper charts for the coast of Belize (pretty extraordinary but true). I have spent the last week catching up with all the developments in the satellite image / chartplotter integration space.... hoping to test this here soon. Sat images are being used by cruisers widely in the Sth Pacific and SE Asia. Cheers

I have come to a conclusion that is a completely sexist, and absolutely chauvinistic opinion. There are many thousands of videos out there that show countless places where I will never be able to visit. It seems as if practically anyone can be in a place I will never be able to afford to visit because I don't have enough money to do any of the things, or go to any of the places I see here on YT. So what I look for in these videos is,, Females dancing on tropical beaches. That's it, that is all. They can wear bikini's, or burka's, or habits, as long as they are dancing - on a tropical beach - somebody is living a dream I will never realize, and that could make me happy for a moment, but all of these channels seem to have their own interests in mind by showing endless hours of maintenance and dragging a boat off a reef. It seems to me that Hollywood figured it out 100 years ago. Show people what they wish for, not what it is really like.
@SailingLuckyfish4 жыл бұрын
Ric, you know too much and brought a laugh this humid evening in Belize. Now Zaya, get on your dancing shoes :-)

@@SailingLuckyfish MMMMUUUUHAHAHAHAHA I now hove you in my trap! So what's the story on this new girl Ariun? And don't tell me you are just being nice to family from Mongolia. She is totally there for grabbing views with your gratuitous display of her female pulchritude. So maybe after she "learns" sailing she will be available to "teach" a lecherous old codger how to hank on a sheet? You know, of all the sailing channels I have seen, and people I have met involved with them, you are the only one that I find to be real people, and not wanna-be youtube millionaires. (not that there is anything wrong with being youtube millionaires) You (Stewart) really are doing this because you love it, and you (Zaya) really are doing this because you love Stewart - nobody ever loved me that much. Anyway, about this new girl Ariun,,,,6 minutes of bathing beauty, 4 minutes of maps and explaining, 4 minutes of getting unstuck, 2 minutes open and close, and not a single moment of sails up. I see where this is going. (and I applaud the entire thing) What kind of "sailing" channel is this?
