I have my rebuilt engine installed at the dock. Glad to finally have my working engine back on board. Time to go sailing! Also, dolphins pay a visit.

If I heard you correctly, your "rebuild" consisted of a new block. Up here in Maine (home of Moxie the beverage), we call that buying a new engine - one piece at a time.
@SailingMoxie3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yep, that's exactly what I did. We were able to save a few parts from the old engine. But it is essentially a replacement engine. Enjoy some Moxie for me!

This is a great video series. Although I live in NC, I've rarely been on a boat and never on a sailboat, but I got hooked and want to learn more about it.. not sure if I'm up for the costly challenge of eventual sail ownership, but your videos have been very informative

Thank you for watching! My suggestion: make friends with sailors and get them to take you out on their boats. Good sailors love to take new, interested people out for a sail. Also, local sailing schools often have open sail days where you can join a boat or you can go out for just a few bucks. Don't jump into boat/sailboat ownership if you can avoid it. The more time you spend on the water with experienced sailors, the more you'll learn from their experiences. -Matt

Motor looks good.. Wish you would show the boat sailing a whole lot more. How much does your slip cost
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
Hey John. I will show it sailing more now that it's functional again. With boat fee (per foot per month), utilities, amenity fees, and taxes, it all comes out to about $850 per month. I used to be on a mooring ball in Sarasota, and I was paying less than $400 per month, but I had to dinghy back and forth. My current marina is actually one of the cheapest here in Tampa Bay, but a fantastic place.

well done, you must have been stoked to have your engine back?
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It went back on in June, but it took a while to get everything hooked up and working, then I finally took Moxie sailing a few weeks later. Glad to have a functional boat again!

Would be nice to install dripless PSS while engine was out, or it's done?
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had a dripless PSS shaft seal on there already. It works great. Thanks for the comment.

When will you be posting more videos?
@womackke4 жыл бұрын
fantastic! I have not posted it yet but im making a video about total boat bilge paint. It may not seem rock hard in a week or even 2 (can still leave a dent with fingernail) .But a month or 2 later that stuff gets hard like epoxy.
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
I noticed that as well. It seems tacky for several days, and soft for weeks. The install mechanic thought it wasn't dry yet, but I had painted it on several days prior to the install. It wasn't wet, just soft for a while. Thanks for the note. And thanks for watching! I wanted to finally get that engine video posted.

I'm glad it turned out OK with the rebuild. Just curious but what was the cost...ballpark...on the engine rebuild? Install costs too?
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
Hi Allyn. Rebuild was just about $5k even. Installation was about $1k, but I had the mechanic hook everything up and do some extra work for me over a few days, so I paid him just over $2k total. We had to replace an injector, replace hoses, etc. All stuff I could probably do on my own, but I wanted a professional to help make sure the engine and everything was solid.

@@SailingMoxie My Catalina 30 either needs a new engine or a rebuild. I just bought it, and don't have time to tear it down just yet. A much smaller engine than yours, but mine might need replacement at about 8k for just the engine. I am a fairly decent mechanic, so if the corrosion isn't too bad, I might be able to rebuild for about 1500/parts.
@SailingMoxie4 жыл бұрын
I would either rebuild it yourself, have it rebuilt professionally, or buy a used rebuilt engine. You can do it for far less than $8k. While mine was being rebuilt, the shop had a 3 cylinder Yanmar that was rebuilt but the guy never paid or picked it up. They would have sold that to me for cheap if I wanted it. Much less than $8k, and two people could have installed it by hand.

@@SailingMoxie I hear ya..pretty much my plan. I will have to see how bad the engine is in the first place. I have rebuilt a bunch of engines so I might be able to do it with this one. The rough thing is I think it was partially submerged in fresh water. So when I tear it down a little the corrosion level will be the telling circumstance in it's ultimate disposition.
@robz54353 жыл бұрын
I wonder what that guy charged?
@SailingMoxie3 жыл бұрын
A few hundred dollars to deliver it and get it on board. But I also had him install the engine, hook everything up, and do some additional work. It was a little over $1k total for all the work.

you still got this? no more videos of it

I do still have Moxie. But I've been away working on boats and yachts in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Caribbean over the last year. I'll be posting more videos soon. Thank you for watching!
