Guys i learned a trick from my sailing instructor which might come useful to you in the freediving repairs. You only need a cheap snorkel pipe with a reductor, some water hose, and a dinghy pump, and connect them. If Joana would pump the air, Timo you could stay underwater until you need without having to come up every time you are out of breath. I suggest trying it next time.

What good news! I'm so glad you did not have use the "diving bell" solution, with its inherent risk of sinking that beautiful boat. Loved Timo's comment that "one negative thought can use up all of your air". which is true both physically and metaphorically. Also loved his face when Nemo was hammering -- so patient.

As a general hobbyist mechanic, I wonder if engine and gearbox are aligned properly (with shims or washers or however it is done on boats), as this is what tends to eat the rubber out in other applications, especially considering that you split them during the refurb and it only lasted that much. Also you convert it to a fixed coupling (maybe temporary?), but seeing as this is a factory solution, it will most likely cause problems on the next weakest link.
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Жыл бұрын
Heyhey thanks for the comment, in our case, the alignment is self aligning, so there shouldn't be any alignment issues. We agree that fixed coupling would probably do more damage to other parts in the long run so not a good long term solution
@hesseldijkstra5327

I was thinking the same, although it's self alignment but within it's tolerances I guess.

@@waynethiele2065 it's not available here but we've checked the price in Europe and Australia. We did actually buy one from a company in Europe (2 weeks ago) - but it's not even left the country yet and we're beginning to think the company is dodgy... hence why we're looking elsewhere. We've heard it can break often so it wouldn't hurt to have 2 onboard if the original part ever arrives

It is a shame that, with Timo's sheer genius at designing, constructing and implementing, he couldn't develop a way to convert the keel into being able to be raised and lowered, as dagger boards are able to so do. The amount of engineering is well withing Timo's abilities (as so very well-documented in almost every video), and it would definitely be an incredible feat. Great good luck and thank you for sharing!

Why not maket it a SOLID Connection to Gearbox ? I had endles trouble on a Front Loader until I changed it to SOLID connector and never had problems again. The 'Vibration' one is simply to increase the COST of the unit. Oh and Congratulations on the underwater repair job. I was continuously Holding my breath for you. Is it not possible to merely get a 'Breathing PIPE' from surface attached to a mouthpiece ? Best wishes from a retired South African Boer.
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks a lot for your message, sorry for the slow reple. We're a bit worried that the solid connection might cause more damage to either engine or gearbox in the end which might end up even more expensive. The breathing pipe could work if it's a very big diameter or if it's compressed somehow (from a compressor or pump)

i suppose in a hard time you could drill the coupler, then tap and bolt it to the flywheel half, it'd be hard on the trans but maybe that could be mitigated by stopping the engine in the gear you want then restart engine, to avoid the shock load when you change in and out of gear or forward to reverse. very short term fix or for storm emergency only and use the sails for everything, like the old timers did centuries ago. either way good luck and i wish you well. cant wait to see the creative solution.

I wish I had the funds to help you folks out. Someone, anyone please step up and send them a proper set of diving gear with compressor to refill the tanks. I know that is a big ask and it isn't cheap but it is definitely something they could use and I'm sure would take very good care of even if someone were to just loan them a setup. It is so risky diving and working as he has in these videos. Their or so many things that could go very wrong, very quickly and I do not want to see this young family destroyed by an accident that could have been easily avoided with the proper gear. There have been a few times in my life where I see someone in need and just can't help due to money and I come away every time feeling as if I've failed those individuals. I hope and pray for nothing but the best for you and please be as careful as possible working underwater without an air supply. I have seen other channels and even just pool cleaners use a small battery pack powered compressor that floats above where you're working and is supposed to be able to work to a depth of 10 feet/3 1/2 meters, maybe something like that would help. They're re-chargeable small battery pack compressor with a float that keeps the compressor above water with a hose and mouthpiece similar to regular scuba gear with a longer air hose of course. Sorry I can not remember the name of the setup but I know it exists and is much, much cheaper than regular dive gear and compressor setup. Sailing Solianis is a sailing channel that has and uses one and I think sailing Zatara has one as well. Please look into that setup as I think it would work and serve you very well in the future for if nothing else just cleaning the hull and it would take a lot of worry and risk out of working below the waterline... Wish you all nothing but the best. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

@@geoffmaurice9905 thanks a lot for that - yeah I emailed a Volvo dealer in Whangerai a few weeks ago and they said something similar... we also did actually order a party in Europe also 2 weeks ago but they've still not shipped it and we're beginning to think perhaps the company are. a bit dodgy, hence why we're now looking for a cheap 2nd hand solution ideally a bit closer to home 🤞

Find a barge crane to lift the back of the boat out of the water. I absolutely hate sail drives, I wouldn't own a boat with them. I only want straight shaft or v drive.
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Жыл бұрын
Barge crane sounds expensive, but we could lift with the big inflatable tubes we used to haul out. It’s the first boat we’ve had with a sail drive… let’s see how we feel in a few years! 😅

@@SailingNV If you ever need to work the sail drive, you could just pull the boat over to 90 degrees at a dock. Rig should be able to take that load

Cheers Michael - yeah ideally we‘re trying to find a cheaper solution as we paid something like that for the part to a company in Europe (2 weeks ago) but they’ve not even shipped the part yet and we’re beginning to think the company might be dodgy so we’re trying to get another one as a backup but can’t afford to pay that much again

...ok... stupid question, where does the dog go to Poop? 😆 Do you train it to poop out the side of the boat, as well as peeing? 🤔 I can't see it using the head, like a act that's been trained to use a toilet.

Good question, we take him for a walk to the bow and usually he goes there or if he’s desperate and it’s a bit rough he’ll go at the back. We’ve recently upgraded his toilet to a Astro turf grassy patch ;)
