BOAT WORK TRANSFORMATION TIMELAPSE in minutes
Here is a summary of some of the work we've done on the hardstand in the boat yard over the last 2 years transforming NV from an old Open 60 (2nd generation IMOCA) into a fast family cruiser.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
You can find out more about the boat, us and our refit plans on our website www.sailingnv.com or follow us on

First, Timo is an animal! What can’t he do without your help and support Jo! Timo just climbs the mast then you just cinch the halyards. This project parallels Project Duracell in so many ways. Two couples pooling their knowledge and skills to take a tired global racer from the hard to the sea again. Two great stories! Second, Jo, when I saw you go down that hatch while, what 9 months pregnant, my heart stopped for a second. You are a strong woman to do that work and tame Timo! Be safe.

LOL, yeah, let's see that "tired global cruiser" park at Tuamotu atolls and Caribbean islands with 5 meter keel. Crazy they sure ARE. Let's see how it works out. There's a reason people don't buy Ferraris to make them into campers. 🙂

This is a match racing boat and the kiel or the knive(also known) stays there no BUT.. You only have an advanced variation of the knive that lets you set the angle so you do not need pips to hang on the edge of the craft when tileing at speed..

When drilling new deck hardware you should do the "drill fill drill" method. Drill over sized holes through the deck and fill with expoxy resin cotton flock mix. Once set drill the correct size holes. This will stop water from rotting your deck core.

Wow! I had no idea that the keel can not be removed. That kind of draft is a real problem, I was amazed at the excavation needed to get the boat down to a workable altitude. Seeing how often you people don't wear eye protection makes me cringe.

Congratulations to you both for what you have achieved over the past three years. it has been a pleasure to watch the amount of time and effort you have both put in to converting a tired race boat into a fast family cruising yacht so far considering where it is all happening, a new arrival along the way, overcoming major issues like the rudder bearings and a lack of funds to do the things that needed doing like replacing sails. Then there was the shout out for new subscribers and you are almost to 8000 now which is fantastic! Looking forward to what happens next in this amazing adventure of yours. Awesome work! That boat is so lucky that you guys adopted her and gave her a spa day...year..two year spa treatment. I'm going to have dreams of surfing that boat down a wave, just on the wrong side of the hairy edge of control while screaming yeeeeehaw like I was on a 100' tall windsurfer! I have the harness, where's the foot straps?? Excellent video, and honestly, capturing the refurb process I think can add to the resale price of a boat. Prospective buyers can see exactly what materials you used, what process you used to apply or whatever, how long you let things dry in between coats, etc. But the best part is your KZbin fans can watch in 22 minutes what took you two years:) Thank you for posting!

I'm so happy and excited that i found your videos about building a Viking Style boat!!!! They are very informative and fun to watch since you're not a professional master boat builder i can relate to them much better than other videos 8 have found on the subject!!! So i want to say thank you for sharing your journey with the rest of us! My dream since i was a child was to build a Viking Longship and you have given me the motivation i needed to start the planning and researching process!!! Again thank you very much for sharing your journey with the rest of us!!! If you ever make an epic journey with your vessel please make a video diary so wan all see what a single determined man and wife can do together!!! Who knows maybe you will help to bring back a small piece of the Viking heritage much of which was lost due to other religions trying to either completely destroyand or erase the existencec of the,viking culture in its entiretyIMHO, they were and should still be considered the worlds only TRULY free peoples!!

Looks like a great job on the refit but having sailed on one of these beasts I dont know if I would want to convert one into a "family cruiser". They are a boat that is AWESOMELY fast..... but also AWESOMELY uncomfortable in how they deal with sea state. Unless you are blasting along at full tilt boogie the ride will pound you to pieces. And at full tilt boogie you do nothing but hang on for dear life.
@SailingNV

The older 60’s weren’t anything like the new ones. The new ones are like riding a runaway freight train at full speed, even with the foils. The older ones were heavier and more solidly built and didn’t have foils like the new ones. However, being they’re still ‘ultralight’ the noise below has got to be loud, I know the all carbon 44ft pocket rocket I race on is super loud below, I couldn’t imagine one of these.

I don't know if its Nico's accent or something in the way you've made the video's or something more fundamental in your personalities and relationship, but on screen Nico has always rather given me the feeling less that he's fixing the boat and more that he's loving it and your future into being. Really quite wonderful to watch. Thank you for sharing what's interesting but actually quite an intimate process referring to both the life building and the boat building. It would be great to see a bit more of the inside of the boat now your on the water and have it lived in a little. I found the inside slightly difficult to get my head round without soft furnishings and the detritus of domestication to dress it. (apologies if i have missed a video somewhere)

To have less draft, i have see a USA 50feet Ketch crossing under a road bridge by using its spinakeror jib halyard and a waterproof bag, hooked on, of about filed with 1000l that is hoisted full of water to make the hiking of the hull about more than30 to 40° of the flat level by hoisting the bag more and more. your Max draft will be the rudder draft!!🤐🤨🤔😐😉😊😊😊😊 That could help you in case your draft is to much for your mooring(This vidéo is on youtube ans i am sorry i lose the adress.) Bon courage and stay safe👍👍👍👍👍

I always wonder how do you sand and paint the spots where the stands are?
@SailingNV

Often you ask to be put in the straps/slings of the travel lift over night so you can paint those spots then

The concept is cool, but with that kind of draft youre really limited where the boat can go and anchor.

You obviously know a lot about boats, so I'm sure you have considered this already, but how confident are you in how the bulb is attached to the bottom of the keel? My understanding is the high performance racing boats are designed for performance and push the limits of design in this regard... perhaps sacrificing some safety and durability in return for speed. For open ocean sailing, a durable keel is of course critical. There have been infamous cases where the bulb has pop off these keels (see the Mike Plant story). Don't want to be a downer as you start your journey, just hope you are considering possible issues with this keep type. Best of luck and safe travels. Enjoyed watching you guys work. Inspiring.

Hey Bill, thanks so much for your comment, it is indeed not something to be taken lightly, timo did do an inspection of the bulb and it’s attachment, removing all filler to see the boat attachment and he considers it safe for another 5-10 years but does anticipate to rebuild when we reach the med! :) thanks again, we really appreciate to have comments like this 👍🏻

Nice fast sailing boat, but I doubt you will get into many many marina's with such a draught ! LOL. (Or close enough to shore for safe anchoring). Amazing to see people start over again and again what people have done for decades (centuries) ? Recoup an 'old' racing hull and make a fast cruiser out of it only to learn that the beauty of sailing isn't speed ...

Thanks for the comment, but we’ve both been cruising for a long time and we chose this boat for what we’re interested in doing at the moment - fast offshore cruising. You’re right about us being restricted to the yards and marinas but we are aware of this and ideally prefer not to use them if we can and prefer to be self sufficient (watch out for our next vid - it’s going to be on this topic). As for anchorages, so far (in nz and Fiji), we’ve had plenty of choice (and our draft means we’re extra stable) and enjoy having such a huge cockpit (especially with a baby and dog!)

It will be interesting to see if adding carbon fiber to your utter will solve your delamination issues long-term. Typically mixing fiberglass and carbon fiber does not yield a desirable effect. This is an over simplification and probably won't be an issue due to boats being operated in consistent water temperatures. Normally when you mix carbon and fiber glass they contract and expand at different rates. This effect can be compensated in the resin using when laminating carbon and fiberglass. Overtime it is possible that the carbon fiber and fiberglass will delaminate due to constantly expanding and contracting a different rates. Resulting in the epoxy between the carbon and fiberglass to fail at the weakest point where you have the most movement. Again it is probably totally fine but something to consider and mention when working with carbon fiber and fiberglass.

Thanks very interesting comment - yes we're aware of this, but hadn't thought about it too much thanks :) ... also our boat is made in fibreglass with all reinforcements in carbon and kevlar - so is also one big mix! Old style ;)

She was designed built and raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa and competed in a few vendée globes, the first of which was in 1992 when Nándor raced her coming 5th, becoming the first non Frenchman to finish the race. We plan to make a full history episode soon :) and you can read more on our website sailingnv.com

Racing boats have a really thin hull, be very aware of stress cracks, these boats are made for a few years of racing, not much tought is given when designing for real world yachting and lifetime of the boat, keep this al in mind and youll have the best (and probely most expensive to keep up) cruizing yacht on the 7 seas

Hey Ben - this might be true of more modern race boats, however ours was built more than 30 years ago to do the Vendee Globe, by Nandor Fa (who we've chatted to about the boat and the construction), and the boat was overbuilt and also exteneded and reinforced in Australia in 2008 for racing in tough offshore conditions - hence why it was overbuilt again
