There was a bunch of stuff covered in your video, but the most important was the PFD testing. That was brilliant. Looked like the water was a little cold and the wind was blowing. You could see the concern on your boy's faces. So good to get that experience in a controlled environment so if it ever happens at sea it will be second nature. I've seen drills on how to retrieve someone, but showing what to do in the water is also super important. Congrats on your new boat! I'm getting caught up a bit on your adventures. Thanks for all the detail :) F

As a family we have studied and practiced our safety procedures and continue to along the way. Both Maki and I thought it was super important for the boys to "feel" what it's like when the vests deploy and to have them don the spray hoods. Better as you wrote to have tried this in a controlled environment VS the real world situation. We have taken this approach with many of the safety systems aboard......makes us a better and safer crew and family :-)

Greg Breland: thank you Greg! We really appreciate your comment. Our hope and mission in part is to make videos that are informative but still entertaining. There are some great sailing channels, but even when we were at home watching, we found ourselves still asking questions. We want to provide more clarity into what it takes to get from land life to sailing or cruising so others can make the right decisions for their journey and make the dream a reality. Thank you again for watching. Stay safe. ~Andy

Robert W.: thanks Robert! I’d love to see more of the aftermarket stuff on the boat from the factory but it makes sense why they have it set up like this. We’re going to be doing off-shore blue water sailing so that requires solar, water maker, and other systems that someone who plans to coastal sail or cruise may not need or want. It is a lot of stuff but in the end it will bring safety and certainly more comfort 😊. Thank you so much for joining the adventure! All the best and please stay safe! ~Andy

What a process so far. Y'all are doing great on safety and teaching the boys. Love the choice on Highfield, but I so thought you were going with the center wheel you looked at. Looking forward to the family cutting the umbilical cord and getting out on your own 🤙
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
The boys jumping in the pool with their vests we thought was very very important for them to experience. They know how to swim well but you could see the vest ballooning around their neck was a whole new sensation along with pulling the Spray Hoods over their heads and becoming comfortable breathing that way. We LOVE our Highfield dinghy and we wanted the wheel off to the right but that alone is a $6K option which can be added later so we thought let's just wait. To be honest in the end driving with the tiller is easy. Captain Richard is phenomenal and even though Maki and I had sailed in CA, now that we were on our very own boat, we felt it was important to have a professional on board until we truly become comfortable with our Leopard Catamaran.

Congrats..!! Check the bolts on the davit winch motor. I took hull 44 - 50' to St Thomas, via Key Biscayne... By the time we got there, the last bolt came loose. Also all the ceiling panels fell out, and you can lose the cockpit one overboard. Then salon one landed on my head while sleeping. New boat bugs.. Great boat though . Enjoy ..

Keep your dream alive and before you know it you’ll be on your catamaran too! Our goal is to share some insight into how the process of buying and outfitting a cruising catamaran happens and to share the reality of the decisions that need to be made, cost saving measures etc etc. Maybe we’ll see you at the marina or better yet out on the water! Robert Flindall. Hi Robert! Thank you for your kind comment. There is a lot of information but since we’re living and cruising on the boat, we’ve tossed ourselves in the deep end so to speak and are finding it pretty easy to put into practice. As long as we use all the great information being passed on to us we‘ll be fine. By the way Leopard prepares informational binders for each boat owner that are nothing short of incredible! Very very well put together and organized. And they also provide it all digitally! Anyway hope you are enjoying the videos 😊~Andy

FYI-having your dinghy in the davits with the engine to port puts additional strain on the davits due to the asymmetric distribution of weight due to the outboard. If you put the engine to starboard, the “lock” on the starboard side of the davits absorbs some this weight, eliminating the twist of the davits that can occur.
@sailingsvoliluki69383 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, you are absolutely correct however we are having a 'lock" added to the port side of the davit as well. For now, any time we are moving the boat I use a ratchet strap on the port side which keeps the davit from moving at all. Has been working great. Without the strap or the additional lock we are adding, you are correct, the davit moves from the weight of the dingy especially in big seas. The other thing we do on offshore travels is strap the dingy down at front and aft (of the dingy) and also and "X" strap two ratchet straps so neither the dingy or the davit can move anywhere. We have been in some 8-10' seas and I was extremely grateful we had strapped the dingy down well before heading out. Anyway, thank you so much for your great thoughts and suggestions! All the best and Happy New Year!

What is the square footage of the saloon (length by width is fine)? We can't find that info anywhere. We were looking forward to this video, but were hoping for more of the move-in. Will you show another of finding room for your 36 boxes? We want to do the same thing in about 5 years. Thanks for the inspiration. Fun to watch!
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
The salon is approximately 12 x 18' ......there is tons of storage space however that said, this is still a boat and not a house so that needs to be kept in mind. We staged our land departure by renting our home 7 months before we planned to fly to Florida for our boats delivery. We put most home belongings in storage, rented an apartment with minimal items so the final move would be easy. Boat items we shopped in advance, washed everything from sheets, towels, cooking items, plates etc and packed them up......shipped via UPS to Florida and put in an inexpensive storage space till the boat arrived :-). Keep going, 5 years will come and go and you'll be on your boat before you know it! Hope you continue to enjoy the videos! All the best and stay safe! Andy

The way he did it when the boat swings in weather and or current and you go to haul the anchor will break the connection at the anchor. Dear OliLuki crews, I am another future Leopard 45 owner,, supposed to receive her in July from France. I have been following you from Istanbul. I would like to ask you the following questions, - It seems tha you use soft solar panels, why did not you prefer to install them on top of the boat instead of using rollbar? - do you have any comment whether your rollbar soluttion can fit to 45 Lounge version? - Have you added any extra sails such as code 0 or code D ? - Had you done a list of your 36 boxes things before going to shooping, if so, would it be possible to share as well ? Please also share your extras with their costs then the video and the information would be more valuable. Waiting your coming videos eagerly. Enjoy your new life.
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your new Leopard 45! How exciting!! Ok to answer your questions.....the solar panels we have our 365W LG panels. They are not soft (can't walk on them) which is why they are mounted over the stern which also doubles as a little garage or protective area for the dinghy. 4 panels brings us nearly to 1500W of power which has been fantastic to keep our AGM batteries topped off. For the Lounge Version, I know John Brault from SS Fabricators in Fort Lauderdale, FL who does the work for Just Catamarans has an updated version for the new Lounge 45. Essentially it will be moved a little further back because of the Main Traveler. We added the bowsprit for the Code 0 which we love using! The 36 boxes were in general were filled with items such as pillows, blankets, towels, dishes plates, utensils, etc....pretty much everything you'd need to move into a small apartment. Congratulations on getting the boat. Videos are well done and informative. I'm guessing you're going to home school the kids, what grade are they in? Contrary to some of the other comments I think they're very well behaved (and I've seen lots of kids in my 40+ years as a cub scout leader!)

Hi so glad to see you commissioning and fitting out in usa. It has to make it easier that an overseas pick up and commissioning like the folks are documenting in a podcast called ' covert castaways' you might find interesting the difference. Did you mention your previous sailing experience? I did not find in in you bio. Just curious I don't want to make a silly comment. I really like your shakedown cruise in usa to start ,so smart . Cheers Warren
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Thanks Warren. Yes outfitting in USA especially with a company like Just Catamarans that knows Leopard Cats inside out does make it much, much easier. We'll probably put our sailing experience in a future video but that said both Maki and I have spent much of our lives on a variety of boats, sailing, motor and both mono and multi-hulls. But, even with experience, when you buy your own brand new boat, it feels really different which is why we decided to take things slow and make sure we thoroughly understand our boats systems and behaviors. Hope you like the videos and thank you for joining our adventure! Stay safe! Andy

Why did you not option a type of lithium batteries? Expensive up front but long term they are cheaper and better..
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Greg : Hi Greg, we opted to keep the AGM batteries we upgraded to from the factory and will use them till early next year and then switch to lithium. We just couldn’t justify tossing the AGM’s since we would get nothing for them (maybe $1k). That said the solar system has already been prepped for lithium so the exchange will be really easy. For now the 1500W of solar pumping into the AGM’s is doing a fantastic job of keeping the AGM’s topped off. Of course summer heat especially in Florida will require the generator to run A/C 😁. Thanks for joining the adventure! Stay safe! ~Andy

One thing to always use, is your kill switch bungy, when running a dingy outboard, wasn't explained in video, by the salesman, and he should have known better. wear the kill switch wrist band, same as on a jet ski, as you know they have cruise controll etc, if you fall off when in control, kills engine. And the swim is short.
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for taking the time to watch and your great comment. We do indeed wear the kill switch bungy.......safety first, always! Take care and all the best!

@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын

@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Steve Gem: Hi Steve. Maki and I both had boating throughout our lives but never actually owned our own. This is boat number one for us. That said we have been sailing on and off for years and have sailed both mono and catamaran in a variety of places like Southern Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans.

@sailingsvoliluki69383 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex! No regrets so far.....well one.......next time we'd step up to the Spectra 1000 water maker over the 400 which is still an awesome unit, but making 40 gph vs 20 gph is a big difference. Batteries at some point we'll probably upgrade but the AGM's have been working out great.....just need to manage power. Anyway thanks for taking the time to watch and join our journey. All the best and stay safe!

Catamaran sales are thru the roof and manufacturers can barely keep up which is why Leopard launched a second production line last year for the Leopard 45, their best seller. It may not have been shown on the video, but I didn't see the following done: 1) Mast step installs were pop riveted on. They should have a galvanic insulator paste put on between the rivets and the mast, as even two different types of aluminium will induce galvanic corrosion causing your mast/new steps to corrode. Something like "duralac" is needed to stop this. Installers may argue it is not needed, but they never see the impact of their install 3-4years later. 2) Solar panel frame being screwed into the boat roof, should have had the drill holes epoxy sealed to prevent water ingress into the roof core. I suspect this didn't happen because it would have taken a couple of hours to epoxy the holes and re-drill them. Even though they likely sealed between the solar frame and fiberglass roof with a sikaflex 291(or similar), the seal will eventually leak, which is why the holes in the roof need to be epoxy'd. Good luck on your adventures
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! Thank you for your comments /suggestions. For the mast steps the installer did use an insulator paste and we did film it but Maki cut it in the edit 😩 because she, we are trying to put videos out that are informative but also hold entertaining value. We have many many hours of footage but most people would pass out from boredom 😁. For the solar system they did use an epoxy seal but I’ll have to ask the process / timeline. I have been at the boat for almost all the aftermarket work and I know they had allow for curing time regarding the solar arch install. I’ll have to ask but thank you for your comments. I really appreciate it! ~Andy

Hi Catherine, we've actually done a bunch of man over drills. The boys have also come to know the boat well.....how to call for help on the VHF, emergency procedures on board (fires etc). Both Maki and I have spent over a decade in the airline industry so safety training and recurrent training is built into us and we've passed it on to our boys so the weakest link on our crew isn't so weak any more. Hi Ross, over a 5 year period that's actually not bad. @@sailingsvoliluki6938 I noticed at the end it looked like you had the engine propped up with the bracket off the shaft. Be cautious using that..it's for maintenance only and not designed for transport (at least on the big Yamahas). I'd hate for something to break bouncing around off the back of the cat. Check with other cruisers and see what they do. Mine's a 250 HP so probably not the same. Grab a couple of spare garden hose o-rings for the flush line. I seem to loose those all the time.

Corey thanks for all the great suggestions! Appreciate it. This new 25hp Yamaha (way smaller than yours) does have a tilt feature that comes in manual (we tilt it by hand) or the fancy electric version which cruisers we’ve spoken with only really use when gliding up onto a beach somewhere, saving the prop from getting banged up. Anyway I’ll take a look again and pick up some spare parts like you mentioned. All the best! ~Andy
