Nothing like a proper tropical storm to check all the hatches and windows for leaks. Sounds like no issues. I'm surprised the Mooring posts did not have hooks to hold the lines up. You might have tied a short line around the top of post to hold likes up. I also have seen a lot of dock cleats pull out in storms and extra lines to the post is a good back up. The marina seemed well looked after though. Nice job keeping your new (!) Yacht safe! Cheers Warren ( in pa). We got 8" rain from that a couple of hours later........

8" of rain is a proper down pour! We had that at 4:30am and it was incredible to see that much rain falling. It was definitely a good test of all the hatches, non of which leaked a single drop! The Fishing Bay Marina was fantastic. The staff were very attentive and helpful and other than the pylon at our starboard bow, it was the perfect place to ride the storm out. Thanks again for joining our adventure. Stay Safe! ~Andy

Hi Zac! I remember the show Entourage! I looked up the yacht and it's owned by a tech billionaire that has set up a yacht charter company out of Miami......his business model is the same as BizJets. Enjoyed your video...thanks for sharing. For many years I've tied my sailboat in a small "hole" in our harbor for hurricanes. I use 5/8" three strand nylon and tie it from the boat to neighboring oak trees. When Hurricane Katrina came ashore just west of Pascagoula, MS (my sailboat's homeport) we experienced a twenty plus storm surge and hurricane strength winds in our harbor. One line broke but the others held and the boat came out of it without a scratch. Ironically all the homes around my boat were destroyed. The shipyard across the river from our harbor (Ingalls Shipbuilding) suffered a billion dollars in damage. I've been fortunate that my boats through the years have ridden out many hurricanes without suffering any damage. But preparation is the key as is moving them away from docks.

Hi Dick, thank you for sharing your experiences.......may our boat fair as well as yours have over the years! How crazy that essentially everything around your boat was damaged or ruined and your boat was scratch free! Thanks for joining our journey! Stay safe!

@@sailingsvoliluki6938 The very first time I staged my boat in the new hurricane hole, the lady who owned a nearby house called the police. She didn't want a boat near her home during a hurricane. She expressed concern that the sailboat would come through her house during a storm. The officer, whom I knew, told her, "If you're crazy enough to stay at home during a hurricane and that boat comes through your house, maybe you should hop on it as it could save your life!" She hung up the phone and never called back.

I just got back from a nice sail on our local lake and lo' and behold, a new Sailing SV OliLuki video! Nice! It was quite ironic watching your preparations for the hurricane - double and triple checking your dock lines. It's a beautiful evening here in Canada, and I still double, triple and quadruply checked my dock lines before I left our sailboat tonight. I couldn't imagine the anxiety prepping for a hurricane, worrying whether or not you did enough with the dock lines. Job well done guys! And thanks for another great video!
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! It all turned out ok thankfully. I guess in the world of hurricanes this was a baby but hopefully that's all we ever see or better yet never see again! :-) I'm glad we were in a marina that put us in a slip with pylons and cleats at every point around the boat allowing me to run lines so the boat would stay centered in the slip no matter where the winds were trying to take us!

I wen through a 36 hr storm with sustained 40-55mph winds with gusts stronger in my 45’ monohull hitting dead astern. Fortunately I set an anchor on a 20-1 scope off the stern which kept me from going forward. Be sure to tie a line to the anchor and bring it back to boat or attach a float to help pull out anchor since it will be buried.

Hmmm I missed this Ep I don't know how.. however nice to see you and family.. you did good with hurricane, yes more tag lines more better, those boats that was shaking crazy , I'm sure they did not have enough tag line or they kept the lines loose,or the knots were not what is in the book..you know what i mean.. today so many on boats and most of them don't know much about sailing. Good job brother, be safe and see you on the next one. oh need to mention something.. next time when there is hurricane and if you happen to go check on your boat, please wear a life jacket, better than not having on you if you happen to go overboard.. because you can never know the power of wind..

I agree with you that more boat owners, all actually should take the time to learn rules of the road and safety not just for their safety but everyone else out on the water. Music is always spot on! Wake Up Little Suzy was brilliant, though I don't recommend trying to wake your sleeping wife 😂. Way to stay on top of the storm preps 👍. Laser boats seem to be common in that area. Since you will be there awhile, I wonder if you can rent them or get the boys in a class to learn the concepts of sailing? 🤙

Hi Curt! Thank you for the kind comments. Thankfully the storm passed quickly and my crew was able to catch some rest even as the storm was upon us 😂. We checked to see if the boys could sail on the little Laser boats but those were from the Yacht Club and you have to be members to partake. That said, before we left California, we enrolled both Oliver and Lukas into sailing classes in Newport Beach to introduce them to sailing, the concept of how it all works, sailing terms (sheets, halyards etc.). That was a light hurricane. I live in Houston by the coast and usually all the boats get damaged. When I was a kid I slept thru one hurricane while my poor dad partially fell thru the ceiling while in the attic trying to cover a hole where a part of the roof flew off.

Hi Lynn, yes it definitely was a light hurricane and hopefully that's all we ever experience. Hope your dad was ok after falling thru the ceiling. Great video. Nice to see how you prepped for the storm. I was surprised you terminated the lines onboard (meaning you’d have to go to the pier to adjust them). We always did the opposite so we could adjust lines without leaving the boat....
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
The bow and stern lines I could adjust from the boat but the spring lines were tied off on the same midships cleat making it necessary to remove one line to access and adjust the other. The direction of the storm would try to blow us to port and out of the slip. Because there wasn't a lot of wiggle room at the aft of the boat and the dock, my main concern was if the winds swung around, then trying to blow us into the slip. For this reason I tied the forward spring lines on the top of the midships cleat in case I needed to make an adjustment to that specific line on each side of the boat.
@drklain4 жыл бұрын
@@sailingsvoliluki6938 Makes perfect sense, I wasn't aware there weren't more cleats available on the Leopard 45. Thanks for answering!
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
@@drklain There are two on the crossbeam up front but they're not meant for extreme loads so I didn't want to risk damaging anything up there. That said there are three cleats (bow, mid, aft) on each side and then also two at the stern which is where we crisscrossed lines to hold the boat centered. Turns out even if I had more cleats, I need at least two more dock lines! :-)

Hi Sue! I think those are great tools to make use of, matter of fact I have a few snubbers on board but I didn't use them this time because the way our boat was docked I was able to tie it down at 8 different points essentially keeping the boat centered in the slip in all directions.

Does insurance cover damages due to the storm? Or are there conditions?
@sailingsvoliluki69384 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed! Insurance does cover hurricane damage but is dependent on the policy and coverages a boat owners selects when activating that policy. To answer your question, there are conditions but they are driven by the insurance policy in place at the time of a storm / hurricane.
